When the End was just an arena for a boss fight, it had a purpose. Now as an infinite dimension, 90% of it is useless. We need more content in the End, things like structures and biomes, but also something to make the trek to this content more interesting. The overworld has lively biomes. The Nether is perilous. The End is just empty.

    • @matthewparker9276
      @matthewparker9276 Před rokem +19

I think adding too much to the end would be a mistake. The overworld is filled with life, the nether is filled with death, and the end is filled with emptiness. So while adding some variation to the end wouldn't be a bad thing, it should still feel desolate and inhospitable.
The end is relatively inaccessible compared to the nether, there is only one entry point (in the end) and only one exit point, which makes difficult to progressively explore, or even build in without restricting access to other dimensions.

  • @iamwhatitorture6072
    @iamwhatitorture6072 Před rokem +156

I'd say that the cave update and the nether update really have shown, that you can bring a lot more variety into the existing dimensions. I would find it interesting if the terrain in the end would add some verticality to it, right now it's all really more or less the same height. It should continue to capture the empty, mostly lifeless and alien feeling, but I could imagine something like hollow islands out of a different material with a lush life inside it.
The teleportation theme is also something it could lean into greatly, I mean you get gateways with wich you can travel to the outer islands and back, but if you want to explore further you might not want to travel all that distance every time, so having something out there which allows you to make a two-way-portal would be really cool, even if you can only make it in the end.
Another really cool idea would be to have another type of portal to the overworld, where you can only jump through with a map and get to the overworld in the sky above it's center. If you are exploring the end, you are in the late game and probably have already discovered a lot of the map, so you may want to travel far distances, it would also give you a reason to check out more strongholds.
I think that there can be a lot done before adding a new dimension, but I wouldn't complain if we get a new one soon either.

Even though Minecraft dungeons fills the end with life, Mojang could even do something similar like that in some small rare sections of the end. And Let's actually hope they add a new dimension even at all. Considering they said they were never gonna add any new dimensions. At least we can be happy knowing Mojang at least slightly considered it with the ancient city portal structures, before renaming them of course to the statue or tribute items, i don't remember what it's called now.

One concern I have is just that a 4th dimension could make the world feel too disconnected, especially on a multiplayer server. There are 2 actual overlapping dimensions and the end doesn’t really overlap the overworld or nether so it’s a pretty contained location, but adding a third ‘layer’ where you can actually be at the same coords/location as someone would just feel a bit off, would definitely be interesting of course and it could just be me being scared of something new but it’s hard to know for sure.

I think it'd be cool if a hypothetical 4th Dimension could only be accessed from the Nether/END(whichever one would make more sense).
    or
It is accessed via the Ancient City "Portal", which could be activated via a Nether Star, and the Dragon Egg(maybe even a new item dropped from an Elder Guardian as well), so that you have to defeat the other Bosses in order to gain access to a new boss, or just a cool dimension.

I think the issues you listed with the End dimension apply to a lot of new features and the general direction Minecraft as a whole is going in, a lot of structures and biomes only serve one purpose, and it's usually just for a unique challenge with loot. I think difficulty scaling or variation could definitely spice it up, but that's easier said than done for implementing it.

I think a good way to spice up the end could be to add a gravitational pull to certain blocks depending on how close you are to them. The general theme of the end seems to be unconventional movement with things like the elytra, potions of slow falling that you can get from phantoms, which are also connected to the elytra, shulkers, which cause you to slowly float up when they hit you, teleportation, and stuff like that. It would be nice to see them expand on that more

I feel like the end should be more alien-ish to its feeling. like chorus trees & their fruits already look like something out of this world so adding more alien-esque plants but no sentient life other than endermen as if this is an "empty alien world where endermen took over"
Likewise I also want a new dimension, to be specific I wish the gigantic portal in the ancient cities would lead to an eldritch horror themed dimension, where mobs are like the warden, as in, they're blind and use echolocation/scent to navigate but be more mutated with extra limbs or strange additions and plants would be bioluminescent. Like, the sculk sensor could be like larger/thicker grass on the ground (like how tall grass grows on grassy blocks if you use bonemeal on them)
It'd also naturally up the difficulty a lot since you can't just run around casually or else you alert literally every creature nearby. Imagine some random bat/bird mixed creature flies around and just just happen to run a bit too fast, it stops in its tracks and starts flying straight at you to attack. Better bring a bow with you. (thus encouraging to bring a variety of gear too)

Maybe some islands could be shaped like broken pieces of a massive statue.

In Sea Of Thieves, the Forsaken Shores update back in 2018-2019, they added a new region called The Devil's Roar based on a concept the team wanted to bring to life called "perilous seas." The idea that there could be a place that you can elect to go with drastically increased danger to your person, but also drastically increased rewards.
We could have a biome similar to this. It could have a fantasy theming with sky islands mushrooms and pale grass, hills with large coves for dragons to hide in, could be centered around a big magical lake.. (There are a lot of biomes that ) but they could reinstate some old features like giants and whatnot, maybe a white stone that you can craft into three or more cobble per block and a unique grass, make it rare, whatever.
A rare biome in the overworld with the concept of "perilous seas" instilled in it could be the perfect place for a red dragon. Perfect place for a lot of things, actually.

The idea of scaling with the distance to the center sounds really cool. The closest parts would be taken by the dragon and could be empty and desert like, thus the "free the end" achievement and it could be just like it is now. As you travel further you would start to see some changes, maybe more/different cities, so that you know there is more the further you go. Travel more and you wold start to see new biomes with new mobs, blocks, some new feature exclusive to there and the further you go the more new biomes and stuff you find. There could even be some kind of mini boss or some stronger enemies.
As it is endgame, you would have the elytra to travel the big distances needed and the portals (that could be inproved to be a key feature of traveling between biomes in the end) would mean you don't have to take a really long time every time you want to go somewere (kinda like nether hubs but existing naturaly). There could be different kinds of portals that would take you to different destinations, like some kind of color code for example so you know what portal takes you were. It could be biome based or the color could differ based on the direction you're going (closer or further from the center for example). Or both.
At the end it could change to a void like biome, were you start to see less islands the further you go, ending in a big nothingness at the end. you could use that empty space for building if you wanted for example, and it would kinda serve the same purpose of the world border. Or you could have something at the end?
I think this scaling end concept is something really unique that sould be shared and explored. So please comment your ideas, share this idea on other places or even try take on this idea if you make mods and like this concept. Let's see if this can grow and maybe reach the main game, i think it has a lot of potential!

I think you could find a way to incorporate the red dragon spawning. On peaks biomes above y=128(cloud layer) stony peaks can spawn a dragon in caves rarely.(Spawn rarity similar to a witch) Reuse ender dragon animations, downsize the model and change the dragons breath to a blaze fireball attack instead. For snowy and jagged peaks you could make a white snowy dragon and breath attacks would cause the freezing affect. Neither would break blocks. To make it optional, they would be neutral and spawn sleeping.
A fun idea would be that, dragons could have a rare chance to drop eggs. You could use those to hatch babies that would be tamable. Using emeralds for this purpose would make sense as emeralds only spawn naturally in mountains.

      WAIT, IDEA
I think it could be cool if they made it partially based on Minecraft’s early stages, not an exact copy, more like a bizarre version that takes elements from the early terrain generation as well as things like The Farlands and the Amplified world type, which all created some amazing terrain. Like, massive cliffs and crevices in the terrain, although it’d likely still have the Skulk worked in. Of course, they’d likely have unique stuff that the terrain would be made of, but just imagine. Like, the way I’m picturing it, you would step through the portal and end up in a bizarre, twisted version of the overworld on the surface. The sky looks like a bizarre version of the one above, being a dark void with swirling streaks of light, the ground below you is comprised of small splotches of land mixed with massive cliffs and ravines made up of new materials you’ve never seen, most being far different from anything seen in the other areas you’ve been, and rivers of a dark substance resembling the Skulk flow from falls that flow deep into the ground below, while strange beasts roam freely.
Im not sure if that’d conflict with how they’re trying to distance themselves from notch, considering that it was largely his work in those days, but no matter what stage it was in, it’s still Minecraft. Also seems a bit to mod-ish, and not sure if they’d reference bugs and glitches. Either way, if I find out how to mod, I’m adding it, and maybe some of the other beta items, like the nether reactor, glowing obsidian, the old red and blue roses (they’d be special, most likely related to the wither rose)

Water can exist outside of cauldrons in the Nether in the form of waterlogged blocks (the in-world water source block is specifically hardcoded to check for biome and thus will always steam away). Other things that "don't exist" in Minecraft are stack sizes above 64 (up to like 2 billion, I think), the ability of an item stack to exist in two places at once, and the ability to teleport millions of blocks away via portals. These things were never actually patched out of the game, they were basically fixed by walling off the problem so players couldn't access them.

They breath fire, and set stuff on fire, they also kill you really fast, and taming them is a pain, let alone killing one.

I think if the end had further "Outer" lands, they could make use of the added verticality the Elytra in the End ship provides.
    Place islands higher and lower.
Have valuable material on the bottom of only some islands, making it harder to obtain.
Or even have that valuable material act like sand - one wrong move and it all tumbles into the void. Watch players rage over an Enderman with a block and a glint in its eyes.
Hell, place structures on the bottom of End Islands.
    And on the sides.
And mobs that all obey a different cardinal direction of gravity. Make the place an Escher print.
Have players go crazy trying to fill their overworld stable with a Globnarx that matches every single gravity type.

One thing that drives me crazy is that Mojang seems to have these arbitrary hills to die on even when something would fit perfectly fine into the game. The aether is a big one- who HASN'T tried to make an aether portal in vanilla? it fits the vibe perfect and would be the next logical step after the nether. You also have stuff like vertical slabs, legacy combat gamerules, or even just implementing old promised ideas like the red dragon, birch forests, or fireflies. It's like they have a weird ego issue where if they didn't come up with it on their own, it's not "good enough" for Minecraft

The whole thing should be a test or a item hunt in the 4th realm to just summon the red dragon to fight and tame in its own area like the ender dragon but with a gladiator arena with multiple challenges like parkour, building and fighting. After all that you would finally go toe to toe with the red dragon guarding a red egg and once killed you would be able to pick up the egg that is protected by a bedrock like cage.

I wonder how they would deal with early game players I don’t think many people go there and since they added ruined nether portals in 1.16 to encourage players to go to the nether they would probably make some changes to encourage people to go to the end. Making it easier to get there is one thing but they still need to fight the dragon. What I would do is make it optional perhaps the player can hatch the egg somehow. After killing it you could make the elytra with it’s wings instead of just making a bridge to get one.

The overlay between the nether and the overworld is what makes them work so well. The disconnect the end has from both is what makes it, well, pointless. What if the end and the fourth dimension are overlaid and the point being lore access. That fourth dimension difference could be a story/lore driven adventure mode. The player is super powered in terms of health regeneration, and carrying capacity and removing those super powers while retaining the gear could go a long way. By massively limiting the players ability to alter the world in that fourth dimension graphics could easily be increased as well.
Travel could be restricted as well (row boats do not cross oceans, elytra is not going to fly your fat ass anywhere with that rickety rocket, and walking absurd distances is simply not possible. This means ancient city portals could grant access to a particular and important part of the 4th, like a specific civilization, while end traveling could be the way to access quests.
The civilization(s) in the fourth dimension would be indirectly affected by events in the overworld. Altering the overworld by events in the 4th dimension would be extremely problematic but perhaps changing the villager zombification process or villager trades access might help unify everything.

Under Notch, Minecraft was an RPG with building elements, but now Minecraft is a building game with RPG elements. This is a shift that underscores large parts of the game, like Jeb's "One Block at a Time" principle. The reason why copper and quartz and goat horns all feel useless because they are mainly for creativity purposes. This is something that people don't always fully grasp based on online discussion and idea suggestions.

The end honestly feels like it's a layer deeper than the nether, like below bedrock sort of feel. I think the reason the aether felt like a heaven counter part, on top of the brighter look to everything, was the fact that you literally fell in the aether and you fell back to the overworld(like a literal fall from heaven). I think a similar dimension to the aether is still wholly new, and things like the anti gravity ore that was added could have so much potential. In my opinion a dimension sth like Aether could exist. The reason you go to Nether is to kill blaze and create eye of end to activate portal. It's only 12 eyes needed to activate the portal. They should add another type of eyes in the corners of the end portal that can be created with loot that drops from mobs or boss that exists in aether! You go to the nether to collect blaze rods and glowstone, then you go the ancient city to sneak through it without being killed by warden and activate the portal with glowstone and water. This kills warden in the ancient city (finally a way to neutralize this boss) and maybe somehow changes the ancient city into something more positively looking decorated with lush cave berries etc (but only the one where you've activated the portal). You go to the aether for another item that is required to create second type of eye of ender. Finally you go to the end to beat the dragon. I think it would be incredible idea to make gameplay much more complex with overall theme reminding me of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy (journey through hell and heaven). It also would make ancient cities more important because for now I don't have any purpose in exploring that structure.

What if there was, in a faraway biome in the End, an ore that would allow the player to craft a powerful teleportation machine. Such a machine would take away the main reason for late game players to go into the Nether, so it is unlikely such a thing would be added.
But let's think about the idea for a moment. It would have to be really expensive, so not everyone could craft them, or atleast not early on. It would teleport the player instantly, without having to slip through another dimension. And I think it would have to be powered in the same fashion as a beacon, the bigger the pyramid, the farther you can teleport. It could be paired with another block, to which the player teleports, kind of how lodestones work. The teleportation distance would have to be up towards thousands of blocks to be worth the effort of making one.
It could have it's uses, I think. But I know it is highly unlikely to be added to the game.

9:20 It's not actualy true. It can't BE PLACED, but it definitely can EXIST. Try to check it out with replacing some blocks using commands, structure blocks or some mods like worldedit. Also water placed there from one bug of 1.16 snapshots (placing glowlichen in lava changing it to water) - which imo should stay a feature - still remains.
17:30 Well it's definitely not like "hell, heaven and normal world". Actually only the regular world part fully applies.
The hell one... well yeah Nether kinda has something in common with hell, or rather very surface level depiction of it, but it actually did go further and further away from it with 1.16 update. Nether is a fire, lava filled dangerous cave world but still a habitable, relatively "normal" place.
The heaven... no. Just no. End in no way resembles heaven. If anything there could be made connection for purgatory or limbus (which actually is sometimes qualified as... part of hell). But mostly... with being so barren, and desolate and in a way are around void (or hovering in it) it resembles mostly the outer space or some weird asteroid belts. And that's the main part of it's identity.
Of course it should be later developed, as we definitely need an end update. But it should keep it's emtpiness, the feeling of being in the middle of the void... thus it should contains rare and not to big biomes (like contained to one island, and most of the time with at most 1-2 other biome visible from it in any direction, so I would say at the very most 10% of space should be occupied by new biomes) and they all should contain rather weird, alien like (in cosmic extraterrestrial sense of that word) life. It would be also interesting if the end would somehow get the opposite of nether treatment about space (I mean: one block in the overwold would translate to 8 in the end)
Also in my opinion there is place for about 2 new dimension. Imo something like Aether(and for simplicity let's keep calling it that) - so truly heavenly, comfortable, safe, friendly and calm dimension, full of life and light would be great fit and kind of counterbalance to (in a way) both Nether and the End.
But I don't think it should be the one accesed by deep dark, that... just doesn't fit. But it could lead to another dimenstion...
I'm actually kinda surprise that You didn't notice one thing that one other person did once in a video about potential new dimension for which the Ancient City portal could be the entrance.
The one things that differentiate all 3 existing dimensions: bedrock.
    Or more precisely: bedrock layers.
Overworld has a layer at the bottom of the world it's build "on it".
Nether has layer both on top and at the bottom. It is build "between them".
End just doesn't have any, and is build... well hovering in the void.
But there's one configuration that wasn't actually used: bedrock layer ONLY at the top. This would give us the basic outline for the new dimension which would be strickingly unlike the other: a suspended (hanging dimension). I would imagine it as a cave world, with some layer of ceiling (in which there would be a lot of caves) and below that a lot ot stalactitec and a whole upside down terrain. All that filled with crytals, fungi, and many dangers (like mobs moving on the ceiling or flying above the void under You) and some flourescent minerals or vegetation would be the only source of light - let's call it "Abyss" for now. It would be dangerous, probably most hard environment... kinda like "purgatory" You have to go through to enter the "heavens", I mean Aether.
I also think we should keep the progression pattern we already see with the dimension. I mean to go from overworld to the nether You just have overwold materials but for reaching the end - despite portal placement in the overworld - You need some nether based material.
So to continue, the trend reaching the Abyss would require object from the End, and reaching the Eather would require some materials from the Abbys (this way Aether's peacefulnes would be like a "reward" for surviving harsh and dangerous Abyss' environment).
This way we would have the dimension progression like: overworld->nether->end->abyss->aether.
Which would kinda be like the mundane life, and then... well not exactly stages of afterlife(as both hell and heaven (and I guess limbus too... though that I'm not fully sure is kinda complicated) are final destinations), but they are afterlife "places" with clear transition from worst(hell) to best (heaven): hell->limbus->purgatory->heaven.

I personally do not think there should ever be a fourth dimension. The classic trifecta is just too perfect: The Underworld, the Void, and the Garden of Eden. There's just so many things you could do with the dimensions that already exist. Both the overworld and the Nether already have enough function. Any ideas for new places can go in either one of those. The End does not have enough function, so any ideas for new functions/gameplay can go there. Instead of adding "alien biomes" (never did like that idea), The End could change drastically, as you get farther out. The terrain changes, the creatures change, physics change, the sky changes...
As you get farther out, you start seeing less of those end cities, and gateways. The sky gets pinker in appearance. Sounds are getting quieter. You feel light on your feet. You're moving faster, and falling slower. The terrain has shifted from splotchy islands, to wispy ribbons. You notice white speckles twinkling above you. You haven't been hungry for a while now. Water from a bucket flows very slowly, and lava is practically static.
That's just one example, but you could pass through different "zones" as you travel away from the center. You might find one you like and want to build there. You might even reach a whole other obsidian ring, but with a different sky color, terrain shape, and physics.

I still strongly believe that the 4th dimension is going to be an ancient dimension, theres the ancient city with a portal leading to somewhere, meanwhile mojang has already added ancient debris and fossils and is currently adding an ancient plant and mob, the sniffer.
This suggests that they are setting up an ancient dimension, where Wardens and Sniffers are more common, it would allow for more crazy mobs, focusing heavily on hostile mobs previously seen in mob votes etc. it would also allow for commonly requested dinosaurs and new biomes.
what twist can they put on this dimension to make it unique and not just a second overworld? Well the increased hostility is one element, a second element could be the atmosphere, perhaps the air is not breathable after a certain distance from ancient cities, requiring redstone mechanics and archeology to progress outside of these ancient dimension ancient cities, similar to how conduits work, this requires significant effort to progress however a large number of rewards can be provided for this progression further and further from cities.

Goblins, trolls, and red dragons - all mentioned by notch and evidence that he was looking for a more D&D feel - and that could fit into a structure based addition (castle ruins, goblin cave warrens, a troll nest, etc) to the overworld or could fit in a 4th fantasy themed dimension.
Of course, the End could use a good update with more biomes.
In fact, what you should do is look at Minecraft - it already has three dimensions right there on the screen - X, Y, and Z. Length, width, and height. Just like real life, except square and numbered.
Admittedly, the difference between the three existing dimensions isn't based on X, Y, and Z - but rather on limits - the Nether sharply limiting you with bedrock below and above (apart from Java's cheat-farm zone) to create a feeling of terror from confining structure, the End with no such limits to create the fear of lacking structure, and the overworld that offers only the supportive structure with the freedom to grow (the balance between the two).
After all, every game is walking that balance line between too little and too much structure.
The 4th dimension, time, is also in Minecraft, in time played (Minecraft days and real world time).
If you were going to do a 4th dimension through the Ancient Cities (already time themed by being ancient), then having it be something that messes with time would be ideal, rich with lore, and open up TONS of potential for the game.
Imagine a world where the biomes cross boundaries of time. A Land of the Lost biome for the ancient past with dinosaur like mobs, a future scape with robot like golem mobs, that fantasy realm of magic and monsters - as the Nether proves, it does not take many biomes to make for an interesting place if they have lots of distinct features and mobs.
The ability for growth with that is huge with new mobs, new blocks, new tools or mechanics, and story telling options that are free from the straight jack of "realism" that the developers seem to have created for themselves in their treatment of the overworld.

Either they update the current end or give us a new dimension

Personally I think The End isn’t heaven but purgatory. So we still have a place for a heaven based dimension. Maybe a dimension that can only be accessed through a portal in The End? That would give exploring The End a purpose at least.
