      That's a normal reaction when you're hearing someone explain, or even defend, something you find immoral
      However, I think it's important to listen in a more open way, because you'll be better able to understand what motivates the person you're talking to. You'll be able to see nuances, because even immoral actions are often done without the intent to be immoral.

      Totally. Soy milk is much better from a purely selfish perspective as well. It's cheaper, has a longer shelf life, it's healthier.

      It’s super easy for some, and quite difficult for others. Depends on how well you tolerate the switch, where you were coming from before (how much meat and dairy you ate), whether you meaningfully know how to cook nutritious, good tasting vegan meals, availability of vegan options at restaurants and company gathers, overall pricing. And much more.
      I’m super happy it was easy for you. But your experience is not everyone’s, not in the slightest. It wasn’t an easy switch for me to make. And for others still it would be even more difficult, and quite possibly not even practicable at this time in their lives. I think it’s important to be as compassionate toward the differences in experiences others have as we are towards animals when analyzing these situations.

    So shes willing to go into a coffee place to get hugely expensive coffee but draws the line at spending 25 cents to get plant milk (or opt not to have milk).

    It makes me laugh a bit when people bring up cost as an excuse not to go vegan. I can't work and make money due to disability but I don't find it hard to be plant based. I don't spend more money on food than I did as a meat eater. Of course, it can get expensive depending on what you eat but the same applies to a non-vegan diet.
    You're doing an amazing job with your outreach. Even if most people won't go vegan on the spot I believe they walk away thinking about the conversation and a seed is planted. I remember when I first heard about veganism I didn't feel like I aligned with it and I had some objections but the more I heard about it the more it started to feel like to only right choice. ❤

    you're asking all these really good questions in your social experiment, but when you switch to the animals/veganism you're not really using her responses against her (...what if they can't comprehend they're being enslaved f.e.) "still bad" if she's against it in the human context, but participates in it with the animals as victims, then she has to explain what the the morally significant difference between humans and animals is that allows slavery, torture and killing of the one group but not the other. she is basically serving her inconsistence on a platter. i wish you would confront her more directly with that, because we all know that there is no difference and if she wants to be morally consistent, then she has to be/become vegan on the spot.

    We live in times where it's often talked about "privilege". And I get this a lot because I am a white, heterosexual, man of middle class. Radical people from different movements such as feminists and LGBTQ activists talk about me being a privileged person, and that I should "acknowledge" the fact that I am very blessed with having a lot of benefits; most of which I have gotten through sheer luck.
    However, being HUMAN in the rich part of the world seem to me like the ultimate privilege; the ultimate quest for justice is not based on gender, sexual orientation or race. The ultimate oppression is based on species. Humans whining about not wanting to pay an extra 25 c for oat milk, thus paying for rape and murder of animals is the ultimate position of privilege.

    • @veganpowerlab
      @veganpowerlab  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I agree with the part that being born in a rich country is a privileged position and that it’s just an excuse (the 25c part).
      But, you should know that lgbtq people, even in Netherlands (open minded rich countries) still get beaten up for it… every person I talk to from there has had that happen to them if they are public about their affection. It is ridiculous and stupid, but it does happen. So, if you have not had that hardship where you can can’t be free to express your love in public (by holding hands even), then it is a privileged position, wouldn’t you say?
      Nothing wrong with privilege, btw. I also have it

    • @MindVersusMisery
      @MindVersusMisery Před 2 měsíci

      @@veganpowerlab Yeah, I am very sensitive to the difficulties of different groups of people. And I have always - long before I was vegan - committed to lessen suffering of humans. However, it seems to me that privilege is relative. And what has struck me a lot of times is that even oppressed groups of people are most often indifferent towards animals suffering.
      In Sweden - which is my home country - there is an author that has written a book called "Alla mot djuren", which means "All Against the Animals" and it goes into detail how humans oppress animals in culture, politics and philosophy. And it got me thinking about the fact that pretty much every movement of humans have had a speciesistic rethoric and agenda in some way of another, from political parties, to social justice organisations, to environmental organisations, to sports teams etc. When BLM protested police brutality, that did so by throwing a decapitated pigs head on the ground and spit and stamp on it. Justice must be blind to gender, sexual preference, income, race, but also definately species.

I'm sure there's plenty of things that I eat that have animal fertilizer but I don't have much control over that, especially when a product doesn't disclose how it got its ingredients. However, vegans still cause the least amount of harm to not just animals, but the environment too. We are not 100% cruelty free, yet, because of how small veganism as moveme still is even in 2024. Once things like the individual mindset begins to change and laws begin to protect animals, then we can truly become closer to a 100% cruelty free society.

      @@veganpowerlab Do you think more than about 1% of individuals will actually stop doing it though? Even with something as trivial as reusable shopping bags, it backfired. They couldn't even get a mass amount of the population to do something as simple as remembering to bring their own shopping bags. The whole reusable shopping bag movement failed. If people can't even have this small behaviour changed, I am not hopeful that a mass amount of individuals will be convinced to override their entire diets. Is the only way to stop individuals from consuming animal products convincing individuals? Or, is there another way, perhaps cutting off production in the first place, despite demand?

      And here is where we disagree: you think animals should not have personhood, because it would mean you’d have to change and stop exploiting them, and I believe they should, because there is no morally significant difference between animals and humans that justifies the difference in treatment
