Re. The flag of Sikkim, it might be because Sikkim was an independent kingdom until 1975, when it was annexed by India (the last territory to be annexed by India). My grandparents have a set of World Book Encyclopaedias that I've dated to late 1974 purely because they say that the current US President is Gerald Ford and that Sikkim is an independent kingdom!

Those two facts would date them between the resignation of Richard Nixon and India's annexation of Sikkim, quite a narrow time period actually. Since they usually updated print encyclopedias about once a year, they were probably published in late 1974 or maybe early 1975.

    • @pmamidipudi237
      @pmamidipudi237 Před rokem +27

It wasn't merely annexed as most people assume. The Chogyal (ruler) of Sikkim was unpopular among his people and the people wanted to get rid of him. A referendum was held where a majority voted to join India and so it acceded to India in 1975.

If you were wondering why the Sikkim flag is in that Brazilian classroom here's why. I had the same string of flags when I was younger as was in that classroom, and I remember there being a whole host of strange flags. In addition to the Sikkim flag there were some more flags from 3 or 4 obscure Russian republics, as well as the Taiwanese Olympic flag. As to why those are all grouped together I can only assume ignorance or local pride.

OR they got sold in bulk and some cheap producer tryed to get rid of some old flags from countrys that don't exist any more (Sikkim was independent from 1947 - 1975), and since its from a school room from a developing country, they will also be tight on the budget and buying ANY flags often is better then buying NO flags (plus they appear to be old so god knows how long they do there duty there already). In my experience, the answer is more often boring capitalist distopia then bad intend.

06:29 Actually the wheel on the Sikkim flag is slightly different symbolism than the wheel on the Indian flag. The wheel of Dharma on the Sikkimese flag depicts 8 spokes representing the Eightfold Path in Buddhism, and the wheel is used to represent Indian Buddhist temples on Google Maps. The Indian flag's Ashoka Chakra (24 spokes), however, originated as a symbol from of the ancient Mauryan emperor Ashoka and was picked for a few reasons. One was to represent the dynamism of peaceful change. The second was to represent the asymmetrical spinning wheel on the flag of the Congress before independence and the Chakra being symmetrical was more aesthetically pleasing.
Also I would like to add on that Sikkim used to be an independent state and only joined India in 1975. The Sikkimese flag originated from that time Sikkim was independent.

On the seal for the Lenape or Lenni Lenape (both are used) there are three symbols for the three clans of the Lenape. From left to right it is the Wolf, the Turtle, and the Turkey. Typically the Turtle is used when representing them, I don't know why, but I know a bit because I am in the OA in the BSA and we use some of their traditions. Because of this we always try to be as respectful as we can, each lodge observes the traditions of the natives of their area. I am in the Unami lodge which is where the Lenni Lenape used to live and we use the Turtle as our symbol for the lodge.

I think the point of the Russian white-blue-white flag is more to mimic the Belorussian one, as a symbol of dissent. The Russia but without the red seems to have been just a convenient post hoc rationalisation. I've also heard, that to exclude red was meant as cutting the ties with communism (which are still very strong under Putin). Of course the red on the flag predates communism by quite a lot. As I say, the point was to have an anti-gov't flag, like in Belarus

An important thing to mention about Belarus flag is that the one used currently is literally the flag of the Soviet republic of Belarus with the hummer and sickle removed, similar thing with the current coat of arms, which is soviet coat of arms with the map of belarus replacing the globe with hummer and sickle, so the people are using white-red-white not just because of the better times, but also because currently used Belarus national symbolic is not actually Belarus.

It actualy is it has the ryshnyk patter which is one of the most belarusian thing you can find in the nations culture. Meanwhile the other flag even with the coat of arms looks plain and simple. With so much white that it almost looks like a surrendering flag but with more uniqueness to it.

Colour red removal from Russian flag is the stupidest and most "twitter moment" thing I`ve ever seen. As a citizen of Russia, I hate this flag so much, it literally crosses out the entire history of Russia. I mean, can you imagine Japanese or Polish flag without RED COLOUR? And don`t forget, Belarussian flag is with red part too

A little bit more background on the Russian and Belorussian flags: The first flag out of the two was the Belarusian, it was popularized when unrest in the country hit a peak after Lukashenko rigged last election the last election.
The Russian opposition flag copies the same layout but also replaces the blue found on the Russian flag with a lighter shade, like the Russian flag from the early 1990s when Yeltsin was still in power. The two opposition movements are very intertwined so this also gives the movement more consistency.
This copies the Belorussian flag's nostalgic undertones. The bloodless flag interpretation is also popular but as the red normally symbolizes bravery on the Russian flag, not a lot of Russians actually use this interpretation.
Love the videos, got a UBC offer so Im moving to Vancouver soon. Be on the look out for the white blue white bumper sticker 🤍💙🤍

The Alabama coat of arms does much the same thing as Texas does with the six flags. The shield is split into five parts: France in one corner, Spain in another, the Union Jack in another, the Confederate battle flag in the last corner and the American flag in the middle.
It is a little strange, though. Why use the modern Union Jack flag when the French and Spanish ones are ancient.

As far as I know, white-red-white flag became a symbol of freedom and rebellion in 2020, when people started massive protests against Lukashenko who sent his opposition leaders to jail and faked the election results. I wouldn't say nostalgia is the right word here, rather the uprising and solidarity.
Thank you so much for explaining white-red-white and white-blue-white flags. Being a Russian citizen, we often wonder whether our voices are heard, when we resist any way possible. It means the world to know they are ❤

Good to see some Block Island representation. I always go there for my birthday. And yeah there are some tourist trappy parts of the island and the tourist trap problem is getting worse. but the lesser known areas like Gracie’s Cove are nice. That “big chunk of missing territory” is actually the islands great salt pond.
