I gotta say, for me Outlast can't be beat in terms of horror aesthetic. The depictions of rot and grime and horror and stuff is top tier. This is the only horror franchise I've seen that I feel like I can SMELL.
I think there are a lot of games that try to emulate the viscera, but it just doesn't hit the same. The Outlast devs really perfected this aesthetic.
Resident evil 7 did good in that aspect as well

My favorite one “Get back here, you silly goose.” The puppet lady took the seriousness away from it when she says it, like you’re being treated like a naughty kid or young student.

One thing I absolutely love about Red Barrels and Outlast is their villains. They’re so outrageously written yet also creepy in their own ways. Plus the performances are top notch. Adds a lot of character to their games.
Best comment, absolutely my favorite thing about these games. The things they say, the things they do, are so fucking *out there* that you cannot help but love them, like to this day I still think Gluskin from the Whistleblower DLC is one of the most legendary video game villains ever made.
I think the villain from the first Trials playthrough John did was kind of forgettable, but this dentist-hand-puppet lady had me tense every time she showed up! 😬
The most terrifying outlast villain is either Marta or Eddie gluskin

My thoughts as well! The writers knew that the villains of their games had to have as much shock value elements as much as possible, so they crank up their characters to 11 and beyond lol! XD
Might be a random thought, but the voice acting of the creepy puppeteer lady is amazing. The voice acting all-throughout the game is great, but idk something about her is so creepy
I think it's how unhinged and gleeful she sounds that amps the terror she brings

Coyle got me scared a few times. Gooseberry had me this close to quitting multiple times the first time I played the fun house/dental level. She's legit terrifying.

"Futterland" is german and means Foodland but not in a food that people eat way. "Futter" is usually used to describe food that fed to animals so yeah. Just for anyone wondering
A good English translation would be "feed" or "fodder"! "Fodder" and "futter" even stem from the same Proto-Germanic word, "fodram"
Just a little FYI, hate to backseat game but this is really helpful info in a chase.
You can close the door behind you without needing to stop and turn around, simply sprint through the doorway while also interacting with the door while passing, it'll close the door behind you. You can "train" door opening/closing with your prison room door in the hub
Your character can also vault over quite a few obstacles, the game is very lenient on what can and cant be vaulted over, if it isnt waist high or on fire, you probably can vault over it, thats it.
to be fair, closing doors while running is really inconsistent from my experience in the game. I'm not even sure if its intended because of how finicky it is.
Okay very VERY important tip that should just literally be on by default but its not. In the settings you can enable a bunch of different settings, like a noise indicator to show you how much noise you're making for example, which is extremely useful
When i found those settings i was so mad that they weren't on by default. so stupid lol

Probably meant to make it more accessible for deaf people who aren't sure when they're making noise. Probably not supposed to be a quality of life thing.
@Chas Mal I agree. I think it's more of a tool for people who need it rather than people who want it. The game is more immersive to be played without it hence why it's off by default

the last few minutes of that trial when you were hanging onto that 1 health had me on the edge of my seat. very interested in seeing you play this multiplayer!

I only now realized that abbreveating Murkoff gets you MK, as in MKUltra (which I'm still convinced is this games' setting, with all the brainwashing imagery and all).
I think YT HitStart covered how all of Outlast 1 was about MKUltra alone with other projects and it does contain public released documents of MKUltra and other simulator government projects. Based on the contain in the beta video the beginning matches completely what they did in some of the MKUltra project but MKUltra wasn't the only project that did these things so my guess is MKUltra is Outlast 1 while 2 and trials are secondary projects or similar ones carried out at different facilities.
The game also takes place in 1959 Cold War times. The first two games i believe take place around 2013 or some odd
Yeah, the first game in particular is literally about MKUltra (in a fictional sense) and the devastating results of it.
@@Knuckleb0ne Well yeah, and this is set in the timeframe real mkultra happened, there's constant talk about "abandoning your past, obeying, getting snitches and disobedient people" and all that. The level result screens talk about increasing drugs and subliminals and the videos shown are cliche brainwashing vids. It's combining drugs, hypnosis, subliminals, and trauma to make sleeper agents for America. It literally is mkultra. It's really fitting for a horror setting imo.
Oh you're right ! I didn't notice it before but I bet they made it on purpose. The first outlast and Murkoff actions in general are heavily inspired by horrors governments did like MKUltra, Unit 731... I don't know if you read it but in the document John found they talked about the CIA working with rebels in other continents to create instability in these areas etc, things they did in real life. I think they way they write Murkoff is very interesting.
John, I'd like to say a big THANK YOU for being a *Conscientious Content Creator* and turning subtitles on... for some reason I have a hard time with understanding 'slobber-y' \ slurred voices in games and often rely on subs & captions to pick up what is being said.

Subtitles are god tier and i always use them lol. It’s not just you having a hard time hearing those voices either. As much as the actor tries to not slur the speech, it can be hard not to. Subtitles are so helpful

Agreed! I have issues actually comprehending words being spoken in videos for some reason so I need subtitles and it really irks me when content creators go "you don't need subtitles" and refuse to turn them on

I think we often forget to mention the Outlast 1 Whistleblower DLC… which was probably the biggest masterpiece in the series

At justa bout a half hour in, when John was trying to beat that game, whilst being chased by, and trying to juke an enemy... I laughed so hard, I was almost in tears. Great stuff.
I've never been this early before. I randomly thought about this game maybe two days ago and tried to watch someone else's playthrough but it wasn't the same and I didn't want to spoil yours. So glad to see this!

I really like the idea of this and think it seems extremely fun especially if you get a group (I haven't tried it yet). Big thing though, if all the trials are just pushing a cart as the main objective it's going to get very boring very quickly and I wouldn't be happy with the purchase.. the carnival got me extremely excited it seemed so fun and unique and then it's just "push this cart" again saddly.

31:17 to 31:47 was a great example of exhilarating Outlast gameplay. Completing objectives while being chased is something these developers get right.

I've been playing this with friends, it's so great to see how you do alone. I think it's great honestly, did better than some of us a in group for the first time lol. I hope we get to see more play throughs, I'm looking forward to it honestly alone or with friends. Sanity on this level was awful xD

This is the best Outlast gameplay I've seen, and the fact that John played it in solo was super cool.
This is definitely the shot in the arm that the Outlast series/franchise needed.
I really can't wait to be able to grab this one for myself.
Opinions may change in a few years on it, but I definitely agree with John that is probably the best that Outlast has ever been, with (in my opinion) the Whistleblower DLC from the original game being a close second.

outlast whistleblower dlc was the thing that pushed the original outlast to instant classic status. the core game was good but that dlc introduced one of the scariest video game villains, gluskin, into the world and boy oh boy what a villain. this seems like such a cool game, i hope theyre experiencing success with it
