  • The largest festival in Braga is São João (Saint John's Festival), which takes place annually in June. This festival lasts for 12 days, typically from June 14th to 25th, and features over 230 hours of activities throughout the city.
São João is considered the biggest and oldest festivity dedicated to this saint in Portugal. The celebrations include various events such as:
    1. The 'Joões' meeting - a gathering of people named João
    2. The largest Gigantones and Cabeçudos (giants and big-headed figures) gathering
    3. King David's Dance
    4. Street parties
    5. Concerts and performances
The festival attracts thousands of visitors and creates a festive atmosphere throughout Braga. It's a time when the city comes alive with colorful decorations, music, dance, and traditional activities, offering a unique blend of religious and cultural celebrations.
While other festivals like Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Braga Romana are also significant events in the city, São João stands out as the largest in terms of duration, scale of activities, and attendance.
Come along with us as we complete our move to Portugal. We are documenting our journey from start to finish, with an intent on living in Portugal pending our visa application approval. Our AIMA / SEF appointment now July 8th!!
