    I had a smaller one a way further up past Hamble last year. I had one of haslar wall as well. We are blessed in the Solent for ray and hound.

      We are indeed very lucky with the variation of species available to us and the many areas we can fish locally. Hounds and rays are awesome creatures to see and experience and we get them in substantial numbers. The stingrays are a new species for me but I new they were there.

      What rays are you targeting and what area will you be in?
      I’m out on Thursday trying for a stingray from the boat. It won’t be long until I can get the shark gear out. 🦈🎣👍🏻

      @@seaangling ive not caught a stingray yet but had some target doubles from thornback and blonde off the brambles. Hope to get out wed , thurs ,been frustrating as tides and weather not been good when had opportunity. Im up river itchen do restricted with tides.

      Thursday looks like it will need to tuck into the I.O.W to shelter from the NE wind.

    I fished there on Friday and got my first sting ray. 8lb on the second cast. Bills tackle told me to give it a go . 4 king rag on a pulley pennel 4/0. It had half of its tail missing

      Congratulations, there are quite a few that have tried this season and not managed one yet. The single figure ones are quite feisty and the take can be quite dramatic. 🎣👍🏻

      Thank you for the kind words Ian. There are much bigger stingrays in my local area but there is a big commitment to catching one and releasing successfully. I thought I’d try my hand at a small one first.

    Well done Mark. Glad you got your stingray. Had my first Thornback ray last week at 6lb 3oz. I was buzzing the same as you. Tight lines and keep safe

    Nice stinger mark . Your right on a minimum of 2 lb of ragworm for a session. It’s amazing how quick it goes .

    You should come to Kerry in Ireland where we get a lot of 40lb plus stingray, it’s a buzz getting any stingray

      A wet towel wrapped or draped over the tail is a good starting point. If you don’t have a sling keep them close to the waters edge. They are fragile with a mucus covering, keep them wet and handling to a minimum. Their mouths are small so a selection of unhooking tools is always worth while.

    Fair play mark had a nice spotted about 4 weeks back now gonna start chasing the hounds and anything else from the solent may try a 5ft pulley myself

      I think the key part to the pulley is how it is fished. No ping allowing it downtide, it needs the grip weight and to be fished slightly uptide.

      Cheers buddy, I’ve switched target now and have other species in mind. I would still like to try for one from the boat and try for a few more from the shore. Very interesting critter to see close up.

      One of the more unusual species and needs a targeted approach. That said they are showing more regular but that might be because people are trying for them.

      I bet, I’ll have to have a go soon. I’m enjoying my fishing again after switching from Coarse to Salt. Even though my views have died by doing so on CZcams, I’m not bothered as fun is more important than views.
      I’m trying to catch Bass at this moment but will look into sting rays soon enough

    How is your new set up going, especially the new 6nbait rods, do they have a nice flexible tip, regarding sitting in the tide / bite detection etc ?

      I am enjoying the 6&B’s and can only fault them on the choice of reel seat. It doesn’t lock into place very well but I can excuse that because I really like the rod.

    I there mark. Watched most of ur video and I have learn one or two things.. av fished for 17 years and still good to learn new things keep up the good videos.. I am heading down to lymington area this weekend foe the stinger and undys.. could u put me in the right direction for a good tackle shop for bait. Looking for sandeel.       I’ve just come back from a weekend in Oban.
      Try Tommys for bait and some quality ragworm for the stingers. I have boxes of squid if you want to swing by mine en-route.

      We are just after the fish bait mate we have ragworm ordered.collecting that on the Friday morning. Heading for a undy Thursday night told to go round Poole area! There is 5 of us mate we wouldn't want to clean u out of squid 🤣🤣.. how did the trip go in oban. U can't beat the skate fishing 👍👍

      For the distance travelled I hope you do well and there are plenty of stinger reports coming in. Scotland was a cracking trip even though the weather looked dodgy in the forecast but held off for us.

      Well we are heading down Thursday morning. Hopefully hit Southampton mid afternoon sometime depending on traffic we could nip round mate and buy some squid from urself if u are around but if not it was much appreciated u offering.     Great video, always a treat! Good discussion around bait choice and presentation and thanks for walking us through the rigs too. As an aside what rod/ reel were you using- seemed very well balanced.

      There is more detail in the latest films I put together “beach fishing setup” but in brief they are 14’ AFAW 6&B mk2’s for multipliers. The reels are the Penn fathom 2 casting specials and line is from ASSO. Ultra-cast mainline (20lb) and tapered shock leader which is 18-70lb. All set up to fish 5’ rigs.

      There are 2 places depending on where you chose to fish. The approach into Hook park or the end of Cowes lane. You then walk either path to the shore.

    I’m trying to get a stingray off my bucket list,failing miserably over the other side of the water to you. Very envious you caught,only thing I would say is perhaps use a wet cloth to keep it covered with 🐟🎣

      I did consider a wet cloth but the dry one gripped and stayed in place. I did pour water over and in the sphericals to keep the ray damp. I did walk out in chest waders to see where the clay patches were and they were only 30-40 yards out.

      You do need a lot of ragworm which helps if you dig your own but I don’t.

    I've had about 75 stingray, over 15 years in gran Canaria, up to 50 kg off the rocks at night, whole mac, got stabbed 8cm, in the stomach, hospital 1500 euro, lost half a pint, not good, l was vvvery lucky, March 2017...fished again 3 nights after, 4 stingray, 15 to 35kg... I relaxed, and got jabbed, be careful everyone... 🤔🐟🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷

      I have walked beaches at low tide looking for them and found them at other locations but not here as the ground isn’t fully exposed at low tide. There is one location in particular where the ground makes it very clear to see.
