    When Larry came back after hitting his face on the floor, he played the rest of the game with a fractured right cheekbone and a concussion, but Larry had the heart of a lion and would not let his team lose if he could do anything at all about it. Youve only scratched the surface on Larry, theres SO much more - they way he would trash talk, telling the opposing players where and how he was going to score on them - and then DO IT virtually every time. His passing was something else, his assists, and he did most of this the last part of his career with a really bad back. The videos all tell the stories and theres a lot of stories which are even told by other hall of famers so you can believe every word of it. Larry Bird is a bonafide LEGEND and one of the top GOATS in NBA history

Also Larry was ALWAYS in the right spot at the right time doing the right thing. He would pass a ball where nobody was and someone would miraculously show up. People showed up for games because they saw plays that look impossible all the time. That is why they say Magic and Larry saved the NBA. The old school play was rough and tough not like today and players stayed with a team for a long time. Thanks for a fun moment looking back in time.

    It WAS. I wish I was there too. I mean today's game is just more corporate, and it ain't even on the players really, it's the agents and the managers and the TV producers. A player of top tier talent doesn't get rewarded for being committed 100% to that competitive purity. It's all worry about injuries, career longevity or "your brand".
    But back in the day, it was pure. And it's a vintage nobody makes anymore. It's not that the quality was so much better, but it was pure in a raw sense. Unfiltered competition.

    Bird pretty much did everything in Basketball you could do on the court. 3 point contests, crazy passes, MVPs, impossible shooting, clutch plays, multiple championships, toughness through injury, 50-40-90 club (and 1 steal away from a quadruple-double if he didn't voluntarily sit out an entire 4th quarter) . I mean he was slow and had average defense but he just anticipated plays and out-thought his opponents that made those negatives better. I think Jordan may begrudgingly agree that Larry Bird on the other side of the court always gives a chance to win a game, even against him. And we all know how MJ demoralized pretty much everybody else he ever faced.

    Before each home game, Bird was looking up at the rafters. He was looking at Bobby Orr's retired #4, Imagine that? An NBA star paying that kind of respect to a retired NHL star? And because Orr was great and because of what Orr played through, Larry looked to his retired number for motivation before a game. That still knocks me out.

    Not only could Larry shoot the ball, but he was absolutely a master at passing. To do what he did he had to always know exactly where everyone was on the court and that everyone was looking for a ridiculous pass at the last second.
    That's what made him almost impossible to guard. You had no idea what he was going to do. He'd go up like he was shooting, but pass instead. He looked like he was passing, but then he'd take the shot.

  • @markjacobson4248
    @markjacobson4248 Před rokem +10

    When looking at the all-time greats describing Larry as slow and unathletic, you have to understand the context. He was a contender for being the best player in the league when he was playing, and compared to all the others in that competition, he absolutely was slow and unathletic. Think about Shaq, for example. By normal standards, Shaq is very much a skillful player and good shooter. However, if you imagine Shaq's skill in the body of the average NBA player, he would have been nowhere near the dominating force he was. He probably would have honestly been a below average player, because his skill could not have carried him to greatness on its own without his freakish power and athletic ability. Larry bird was that same idea, but reversed. He was not unathletic, but his athletic ability would not have carried him very far in the NBA if it were paired with an NBA average skill and intelligence.
