    The ball always moves faster than the players. Bird understood that concept and got around the most athletic of players by a fast brain and quick hands. No need for 3pointers and dunking when you can shoot and pass anywhere on the court at will. Especially when you are that good at finding an opening to a teammate through a very tiny window.

    Bird vs KD? Best clutch player- Bird. Better passer- Bird by far. Better rebounder- easily Bird. Better defender- equal. Most rings- Bird. Most MVP's- Bird. The only stat KD leads scoring avg. KD gets about 3 pts/gm more than Legend for their careers. But because their shooting %'s are virtually equal across the board, the fact that KD avg's about 3-4 more 3 pt attempts per game explains KD's lead. Love to know why you think KD is better other than the fact he is your favorite.

  • @kentgrady9226
    @kentgrady9226 Před 2 lety +7

    Larry is easily the best SF ever to play the game. He's also one of the 3 best ever, regardless of position.
    He dominated an era when the league in general and the East in particular, was ridiculously deep with talent - by far the best ever. How good was he? He was the best player on the Celtics, and had a winning overall record (and perfect playoff record) against Jordan's Bulls.
    I also get sick of the remark that he was "unathletic". He was fast enough to beat anyone to any loose ball. He jumped high enough to be a double digit career rebounder. He was physically tough enough that the meanest, nastiest players in the league thought twice about fighting him.
    To my thinking, that made him plenty athletic, even if he looked a bit goofy.
    Any real basketball fan who DOESN'T put respect on Larry's name, simply doesn't know what he's talking about.

  • @cindyknudson2715
    @cindyknudson2715 Před 2 lety +4

    The trouble with highlights sometimes, in my opinion, is that a viewer doesn't necessarily distinguish between Larry's running speed in his prime years as opposed to when he was on the cusp of retirement due to injury.
    There IS a difference between Larry's speed in, for example, 81 or 86 and 91/92 when he was spending some nights in the hospital in traction in order to be able to play the next day because of his back. What he did on the court in those circumstances can be rather mind-blowing in their own right.

You never knew what he was going to pull off. Stats don't show what was really going on. He could easily have made more baskets, but be was a team player. And, they double and triple guarded him, so he would get the ball to the open man. But, since he was such a good shooter and passer, they never knew if he was going to shoot or pass.

    I grew up a fan of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, but the player who could beat you the most ways with the most skills was Larry Bird. Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, mid-range scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years. Bird was the Batman of the NBA. He was always several moves ahead of the competition, best clutch shooter of all-time, #2 all-time with winning percentage (Jordan is #40), he had the passing gift, and he could beat you more ways than just shooting. Jordan was dangerous when he had the ball. Bird was always dangerous - with or without the ball. Bird is top three all-time with Jordan and LeBron, but Bird is the best small forward of all-time. Hands down.
    "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird." - Legendary Lakers Coach Pat Riley
    “I would much rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird, because you have to play the game as a thinker when you’re playing [Bird]. You have to get inside his mind. Larry wasn’t quick, he couldn’t jump really high, but there were just some sleepless nights.”
    -James Worthy on Larry Bird, via ESPN SportsCentury
    " The difference between Jordan and Bird was that Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. " - James Worthy
    “Larry Bird can’t jump, and he’s not that quick… But he makes up for it by using his head, analyzing the opponent. It makes him better than the competition… Consequently, he doesn’t have a weakness.” - Michael Jordan
    Only one man dominated Jordan. His name was Larry Joe Bird. Bird even dominated Jordan after Bird’s back problems got worse in 1989.

    I just miss those old games, both college and pros. Players stayed with their college for four years and the pros played with all the heart that they had. It was smart, it was nasty and it was all passion. I grew up to these guys putting on a show night after night. I really can't watch modern NBA or most sports in general. All paycheck and little heart. MJ holding that trophy, crying his eyes out...that spark isn't there. I am so glad I was alive when all these giants of the game were putting on the shows of a lifetime.

    I'm old enough to have seen Bird play...and Durant....no question...BIRD by a long shot. Bird gave JORDAN all he could handle (and Jordan never beat Bird...he's 0-6 against Bird)...Bird would dominate in today's rules where you can't touch anyone at all....he'd have 40 a night easily. Same with Jordan. As for Lebron...I still have Kobe over Lebron...not sure why people always look over Kobe....Kobe and Bird are over Lebron/Durant for me after seeing them all play live regularly.

    All time for me:
    1a, 1b either order are Bird and Jordan. Bill Russell is 3. 11 rings, 8 in a row, 3
    MVP’s in a row voted by his peers, the players in the league. Every Hall of Famer on his team says they won because of Russell. He was 10-0 in game 7’s. 4 is Kareem. 5 is Magic 6 Dr. J. After that in no particular order I got LeBron, Kobe, Shaq.

    For the most beautiful basketball you’ve ever seen check out the 1992 Dream Team 4:12 documentary. 11 future Hall of Famers. Everyone was out their TVs for every game they played it was a surreal time. At 73 I still want this documentary at least once a week and it still give me chills just like it did then. Larry and Magic were co-captains. Also, it was the last time either one of them played.

    LeBron has to say he’s the goat . Proof that he isn’t. MJ, Bird, Magic and chamberlain are my top 4. Why ? Each made their team play better. They won all the championships with the same TEAM. LeBron jumps teams who are looking for talent which promotes individual players not team play. Durant and LeBron both say Larry bird was who they looked up to as a small forward!
