Hey guitar nerds! Welcome back to Boomer Guitar Sessions! This is Episode 18, and today we’re diving into the game changers of rock ‘n’ roll: The Beatles. The Beatles taught us how to play rock ‘n’ roll in ways that were completely new. They established a prototype that countless artists use til this day. Let’s get on with this!
There were so many firsts with this band. First, they were the first to popularize the idea of a democratic rock band. Think about the first generation of rock ‘n’ roll stars like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Elvis Presley. These stars had backup musicians who were essentially minions, without equal importance. The Beatles, on the other hand, operated as a democratic four-piece, writing their own songs without relying on a songwriting team like the Motown artists and American pop bands of the day.
Next all of The Beatles sang, and most of their tracks were performed by them alone-they truly knew how to play their instruments, and kept growing as musicians with each passing experience. In addition to being instrumentalists, The Beatles were also a vocal group, much like the Motown vocal groups, but they played their own instruments too.
They taught the world to write their own songs by drawing from a variety of influences rather than just copying one source. This approach was revolutionary. Their popularity also brought about a new business model. Because their original songs were so popular, they were able to go on tour to support these songs in a way that hadn't been done to that level before. Recording technology and PA tech advanced greatly as a result of The Beatles.
Their influences ranged from Tin Pan Alley to Motown, early rock ‘n’ roll, country music, and much more. They didn't stick to just one sound; their music evolved with each passing year. Every member of the band was a multi-instrumentalist to some degree, adding to their versatility.
The role of the producer changed because of The Beatles, largely due to George Martin, whose influence on their sound and on the role of record producers in general cannot be overstated.
They inspired more than just musicians-they inspired a whole new approach to music creation and performance.
