Pac-Man Championship Edition is a demake of a game that was originally released on Xbox Live back in 2007, and this Famicom version was first "officially" made available in 2020 as a part of the Namcot Collection and Namco Museum Archives Volume 1.
I say "officially" because, as far as I can tell, evidence of the game's existence has been kicking around the internet since as early as 2008 when @coke0774 posted video footage of his work on Japanese websites and NicoNico. Much of that evidence was scrubbed from the internet once M2 and Bandai Namco became involved, and though M2 apparently did do some work on it before it was included in the compilations, they claimed total credit for the game.
They pulled the same BS with the Genesis version of Darius ( • Darius (Genesis) Playt... ) back in 2019.
Corporate shenanigans aside, this really is an amazing piece of work. It isn't just a mock-up to look like a retro game. Making use of Namco's custom N163 memory controller, Pac-Man Championship Edition runs on real Famicom hardware, and it does a phenomenal job of it.
The gameplay feels just as frenetic and polished as the Xbox 360 game did, and the presentation goes all out to make the experience something special. It's a bit like someone crammed a nightclub into an NES cartridge - even the sound test has an animated Pac-Man rocking out to the music.
It retains the basic gameplay concepts of the original Pac-Man ( • Pac-Man (NES) Playthro... ), but in Championship Edition, eating all the dots on one side of the stage will trigger the appearance of a piece of food which, when eaten, will refresh the layout of the other side of the maze.
The normal game lasts for five minutes, the extra game for three. The goal is rack up as high a score as possible within the time limit, but the game has a set of achievements for anyone who'd like something more concrete to aim for. Even better, once you've hit every achievement, a new option is unlocked that will reskin some of the graphics with new ones inspired by Pac-Mania ( • Pac-Mania (NES) Playth... ). The game also saves a replay of your most recent run to the cartridge so you can go back and review your performance if you're looking to improve your skills.
It's an addictive game that managed to capture my attention far better than the original Pac-Man ever did, and the sheer energy driving it is really a joy to behold. Imagine how many minds would've been blown had this been released for the NES in the late 1980s!
I only hope that @coke0774 got his due. The guy has a ridiculous amount of talent, so make sure to go check out his channel! Recently he has been posting videos of his work on a recreation of The Legend of Zelda for the Epoch Super Cassette Vision. Cool stuff.

The NES, though seemingly ancient now, is still incredible hardware. It never ceases to amaze me. The potential! On a random note: My elderly neighbour in the 80’s used to have two Shih-Tzu dogs - Pac Man and Ms. Pac Man. :)

Looking back then this should be legit to play Pac-Man CE on a real NES hardware. This feels much challenging.
This is pretty awesome, that a guy like @coke0774 have made a port for the NES of this Xbox 360 game "Pac-Man CE". Almost no slowdowns, fun action replay, and many great things that i'm extremely impressed how did he ported that game to the NES. Sadly the original work isn't public, however BNEI & M2 guys have asked him for the work, and after some polishing, they finally released to the public.

Many PC's back then were just keyboards you plug into monitors. The NES was a chunky box with lots of room for advanced hardware so it kinda makes sense

I played so much PacMan-CE DX on PS3 back in 2007+. Started playing it again last year.Had no idea this Famicom/Nes version really existed. Reading your info it sounds like it was a fairly recent release. Would love to try it out.
I put this game inside my hacked Nes Mini, and wow, this is such an intense game, I love it!

You really need to attenuate the expansion audio on your Famicom/NES, it's too loud.
When you are playing this game, its the longest 5 minutes you`ll ever experience.

Is there a guide for unlocking all the Achievements? Like how do u create sparks? And for a full second? & what is a "No Miss" Finish?
When you press towards a wall it makes sparks. No miss means you don't die. Most people just run through the maze for 5 minutes, just staying alive, to get the achievement. But you can also just use L to rewind whenever you die.
@@customsongmaker L? Lol what? Ya I'm not playing on an Emulator or anything, I'm playing on original hardware aka an NES. I wouldn't wanna cheat my way thru anyway, defeats the whole purpose.
@@customsongmaker Any tips then to be able to create the sparks for a full second? Like perhaps just running around a tight circle or something? Haven't really been able to do it.
@@skins4thewin In the long corridor between the halves of the maze. Grinding as you approach a turn makes you turn slightly faster, so you should be able to start the sparks before a turn and then continue them along the long wall.
Also, if you play normal mode and ignore the ghosts, you can pretty much be powered up from power pellets the entire time and avoid death that way. That's also the only way you'll get the achievement for all fruits, since you won't clear enough screens if you take time to eat ghosts. Plus you'll also get 400,000 points that way from all the fruits.
Anyway after you unlock the achievements, you should try the original Pac-Man Championship Edition. It has 10-minute modes and more maps.
Then after you've played that all you want, try Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, which has some gameplay elements that make it completely different.

This is an NES homebrew.
it was originally, but it was turned into an official game emulated in (and then extracted from) a Switch game. technically it's Famicom with Namco 163 expansion audio, so some of the sounds would be missing when played on an NES.

The graphics really have been pulled off in a Famicom/NES ROM. The extracted ROM is Famicom with Namco 163 expansion audio, so it works as intended on a Famicom with an Everdrive N8 Pro Fami, but all the "Arcade Pac-Man" sounds would be missing on an unmodified NES.
The core Essence of true gaming good clean fun this game was good during its era and it's good during these times even in this era
Yes nintendo did make the Nes but not all the games have to only be made by Nintendo other video game companies can help make cool games for it and this wasn't made by Nintendo
Have this on my n64 everdrive. For some reason the dot eating sounds dont play. Must be an emulation error
it's Famicom with Namco 163 expansion audio - sounds like the Everdrive 64's NES emulator only emulates the 2A03 sound (CPU sound).

This game runs on a Famicom period. The game is emulating the Namco 163 sound chip that is on the Japanese version of Rolling Thunder, Final Lap, Mappy Kids, Megami Tensei II

I do not normally care for demakes. MM7 is better on SNES. MM8 is better just skipped. But this? This is tight.

it's "official", made as an extra for a compilation of NES games for the Switch. but someone extracted the ROM and it's in Famicom (with Namco 163 expansion audio) format, and it does run fine with all sounds on a Famicom with an Everdrive N8 Pro Fami.
it is _based_ on an older homebrew from 2008 (IIRC) though.
