New homeowner here and I cannot thank you enough! Lived in apartments all my life so I was clueless to all these things
Welcome to the channel and we are here to help 👍
Same here. 😊 I never knew that I can change the water filters and go find the whole house shut off valve 😅
I would add things like checking for WiFi firmware updates. Most people never think about that, but it's important to do.
Great video! A few ideas:
Regional - Fall: Clean out gutters of leaves/debris
Regional (freeze zones)- Fall/Winter: Turn off exterior spigots & sprinkler system/store hoses/blow out sprinkler/install freeze guards on exterior spigots
Regional - Spring (freeze zones): Turn on sprinkler/check for leaks
Spring - Pressure Wash Concrete Sidewalks/Driveway/Porches
Annual - Clean faucet/shower sediment filters
Annual - Seal shower/bathroom tile grout (if req'd)
Annual - Clean / lube garage door hinges/rollers/opener chain
Seasonal - Check batteries for smart devices (door locks, sensors, etc)
Hey Michael, thanks for all the feedback. 👍👍
As someone who has maintained duplexs this is all REALLLY great info.
That just amazing. I never knew it is that complex inside the plug. Thank you for sharing
Nice! I'm going to use this to augment my quarterly checklist which includes running a defrost cycle on the fridge/freezer, washing the metal stove hood fan filter, cleaning the drain filter on the clothes washer, cleaning the drain filter and adding water softener salt to my dishwasher. Yearly I also lubricate all door hinges, pressure wash the garbage/compost/recycle bins and descale the furnace humidifier unit.
Thanks for this very helpful video. Also check for wiggle in balcony and stair rails. Since you opened the door with the lawn mower, I'm going to add an annual inspection of your vacuum cleaner. Check for clogged pathway, especially near the beater bar. Make sure the beater bar actual turns, and cut the accumulated hair off the beater bar.
Snowblower every fall.
Check battery backup monthly (ugh, mine runs all the time too)
Checking caulk around replacement window at least yearly.
Every 3 years replace water heater anode.
I definitely need to check bathroom vent. Thanks for the video! I'll be watching next.
I always put a couple drops of light oil in the felt washers of my bathroom fans. Both sides of the motor has a hole to do this. The lint really sucks the motor dry over time. Air circulating fans have bushings so I do them too. Thanks for the videos.
Excellent video!!!
A systematic way to take care of your house! 🏡
Thanks John.
Thank you so much for sharing this, Have a wonderful day !
I keep a plastic box under my kitchen and bathroom sinks. You can get them cheap at Target, Walmart, etc. If I have a slow leak it will go into the box. I learned this lesson when I had a very slow leak in my garbage disposal, which destroyed a few floorboards right by the sink. I store stuff in the box, so I don't lose any room under the sinks.
Great idea. Also, in case you do need access to under-sink matters (plumbing or whatever), you can just pull out that whole box as a unit instead of the tens of cleaning products that get stored in those areas, one at a time.
Great advice, many thanks. The checklist is a great add!
Very informative and out standing channel for all 😊 I have learned a lot from you. Thank you very much sir 👍
Thank you for this. I had an old associate discouraged me about this. I'm moving from an apartment to a house.
Great tips but I would recommend redesigning the checklist to remove all the green from the background. That can use up a ton of ink for no reason.
This is a fantastic resource. Well done. Frequency is so important.
Thanks!
Very good list.
Is also consider:
- Defrost freezer coil annually.
- Gutters
- Fireplace, flue, chimney
- Western states: fire perimeter
Great list. I would also include changing your smoke/CO detector batteries twice a year.
An "every few years" section might make sense too. I just replaced my hot water heater anodes recently.
I debated that as well, thanks for the feedback.
Every five years is good where I live.
Very clear precise instructions on everything good job
dude. this is just what i was looking for. thanks man.
Thank you very much! Great list and great explanation of each part, thank you
Happy to help.
Great video! Very straightforward.
Replace your water supply lines to your sinks if the lines are more than 5 years old. Especially if they are still the builder grade. Replacing builder grade valves too.
Thank you for your suggestions. It is so much appreciated.
Happy to help 🙂
Thanks for these tips! I just made a video on how to budget for your home maintenance. Your video was a helpful input!
Excellent idea, thanks!
Another great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks Brad 👍
Well done. Thank you for sharing
Thanks, I can always use this.
You’re welcome.
I have globe valves on all three of my toilets and sinks in the bathrooms and under the kitchen sink. I have a yearly alarm set on January first to exercises or turn off and on each shut off valve so they don't crust up and stop working.
Fantastic list! Great idea---
Thank you for this video.
This video was very informative. Thank you for the info, sir!
You bet!
For under the sink leaks, I recommend putting a water alarm. These are battery powered and don't cost that much.
At the time you test the GFCI's also test and reset all the circuit breaker's (I do it at change to Daylight savings time)
Great idea for a video. Thanks
Thanks Andrew
I think you should add checking attics. I work as an apprentice electrician, and something we found often was heavy leaking from the roof that was not visible from the outside. And sometimes storm damage is internal, just like checking the crawl space for water. I would recommend doing it in the winter. No one wants to be in an attic during the summer🥵
Great video and checklist.
I would add, checking the shutoff valves for your individual sinks and toilets. It's not something you think about but if you have to replace a toilet flapper or a valve seat/spring set in a sink and those don't work you're only option is to shut off the cold water before your water heater or shut off the water at the curb. 2 years ago my mother asked me to fix 2 sinks that were dripping. No problem... But the shut off valves didn't work. They just spun. They were the older global style. I checked the rest of the house and I ended up having to replace all of the shutoff valves except the guest bath which was rarely used and the coldwater shutoff for the whole house. I also had to replace the valve seats and springs for all sinks. This would have been a enormous bill from a plumber. It's one thing to have them check but to have them actually break out tools... Totally different price range.
Great feedback 👍
My two bathroom sinks don’t *have* shutoff valves…
@@CantankerousDave I wish my two showers had shut off valves.
Thanks!
This is awesome information
This is interesting, l like the full page.
I always make lists on small notepads, rip the piece off and promptly lose it and my wife will wash it and that wife headshake happens.
This is much better.
Thanks Guru.
😂
Thank you for sharing this
You bet!
Well, can you do another video on what to do with wells and septic systems?
thanks - this is great!
No prob 👍
Spring get irrigation system ready. End of fall, winterize irrigation system and bring hoses inside
What's your take on washable furnace filters? Are they any good in terms of saving money long term? Great list btw!
I thought to flush the water heater you were supposed to leave the water on. The incoming water would help stir up sediment to where it can make it out the hose. If I'm wrong, then please explain why.
The show/site Today’s Homeowner has a similar checklist called The Four Seasons of Home Ownership. It’s pretty similar.
Thanks for the heads up. Looks like they have an awesome webpage 👍
Aye tank ya lad!
You bet!
You should try cleaning the lint from a dryer vent that goes thru the roof. Especially a two story metal roof. Lint collects quickly on hot roof vents
Can I just throw a lit match in the duct?
Very nice….😊
One thing you should do before you use your AC for the summer is spray the condenser coils with the hose, knocking off the dirt. It will help with the efficiency of converting the liquid freon backing a gas and quicker cooling.
Good callout Jason, thanks for the help!
The problem I have with door hinges is it is the wood in the door. Exterior metal clad doors do not always have a lot of wood in the door
This is great thank you! I do web development and design work and if you want extra hands with projects like this in the future let me know if I can be of help to you 👍 it looks great though! I love your content
my annual checklist includes sprinkling insecticide granules around the house exterior perimeter. i look for something that includes effectiveness against ants and termites.
Appreciate the feedback 👍
Why not put lock tight on fan blade screws
I have bad lungs. I replace my furnace filter every 4 weeks I notice the difference. I’m not sure you mention the carbon monoxide detectors.
U da MVP ❤
Great tips! Thank you. My home is stucco, how can I clean the exterior? How do I find my exterior dryer vent to clean it?
Turn the dryer on and go outside and walk around your house usually above 1 foot from the ground up. use gloves sometimes the cover is Sharp or it can have spiders. My dryer vent is on the exterior wall the other side is my dryer
I change my air filters monthly
Thank you so much! And you so fine fine :)
Check rat traps for fresh poison I Put a few around after both of our cars were damaged a couple of years ago.
What about snaking the bathroom?
Do you have a video recommendation for redoing caulk lines?
Not yet but the "Funny Carpenter" has a good one czcams.com/video/_ckFuKucNho/video.html
Is there any maintenance to a waterless water heater?
I have set up a system to pump vinegar thru it once a year. I didn't do it with my first one and after 6 years it exploded. Here is a link to show you how;

Every 5 years the wax ring under the toilet needs to be replaced. There are plastic ones now that last 10 years
AC evap coil
🤓👌🖖✌👍😎
FAIL !! had to rewind was to busy looking at his eye color😂😮❤🎉
They made for an eye glass commercial
The amount of homes I see with sagging/wilted wood blade fans *outdoors* is staggering around here. And none of them look good!
So true 🤦♂️
do not click those links
Thank you very much! Great list and great explanation of each part, thank you
You bet, we are here to help 👍
