- When Hattons approached me to do an honest review of their HobbyZone modulars I jumped at the chance. I already have some HobbyZone modulars and have been very happy of them.

I've had a Marie Kondo moment putting stuff into the drawers. I'm trying to be more organised and this is right up my street. I liked them so much, I'm thinking of ordering a couple more!

You Are Absolutely Correct
I find discarded glass jars or coffee mugs that have lost their handles are the best things to store brushes and small files, scalpels etc in. Also the best work bench I have found is a draftsman's table. You can get really nice old ones for next to nothing as no one uses them any more. I have a lovely old 50s one that is a work of art in itself. They are deep enough to have tools etc at the back and still give you are large work surface. You can height adjust them and set them level, plus you can put them in the middle of the room giving yourself more wall space for shelving and storage. You can set up a good workbench and storage system for next to nothing.
Great advice. I just use my existing kitchen worktop.
Ive looked at these sets a couple of times and they do look very good and functional, actually designed for what we need rather than making do with, odd containers and tubs etc
Definitely designed by someone who models.
Where you had the rolls of tape is where i hang sprue cutters and pliers etc. the small holes are for drill bits. You can get paint pot holders either in corner form or straight for the valljo bottles as well.

The tall corner drawer with insert
Is just right for tubes of " Body Puty and " Tube Glue "
The end unit with the large shallow drawers are perfect for holding sheets of decals until you're finished with the model .

Regarding the tool module, I have one. If I were to get another one, I would raise the bottom paint brush panel up om some sort of spacers. Just a bit, maybe 1/4", no more than 1/2 inch. I tend to place the brush in the upper hole, then drop in straight down. However, it hits bottom and bounces off at a angle. Raising the panel would solve that problem for me :) Great videos, Ms Millatt, hope you don't get tired of doing them, any time soon.
That’s a great idea and I know what you mean about the bounce.
These are great units. I'd suggest leaving the magnets until the very end though once everything has dried, as it's much easier to make sure all the poles are correct that way. When I made mine up, I also put a layer of cling film down on the worktop first. If you're using wood glue (as you really should 😉) it won't stick to the film and the flat surface makes lining everything up and squaring it all a doddle. 🙂
Good point. I was happier hammering the magnets before I assembled but I did check obsessively to ensure the polarities were right.
Very neat idea. Most modelers have a hard time keeping their "build area" tidy, especially those of us who work on multiple projects at one time. I had purchased the similar paint racks from Vallejo and have gound them EXTREMELY helpful. The Vallejo racks have the reverse problem from the Hobby Zone - lots of holes for 15 - 17ml dropper bottles, but a dearth of spaces for the larger varieties. An afternoon with the Dremel tool took care of enlarging more holes. I assembled mine with urethane glue ("Gorilla Glue") and touched up the whole assemble with white paint from a spray can. I have been looking at reorganizing my building station in the hobby room and I am quite interested in trying some of the Hobby Zone drawer modules. I'll have to look at the product measurements and find a stockist in the USA. Thanks for presenting this set Kathy. As a long-time model builder I enjoy seeing tips and products to keep the area better organized.
I’ve certainly been tidier since I put them in but it’s just displaced the mess elsewhere... I’m trying to be tidier but it’s not really my nature.

Hi, I use the small 'thingy' with holes in for the drills I use most often. As for the sprue holder which I never use for intended purpose. I have it mounted on the wall above my bench to keep my Cd's in. I like music while I work!.
CDs would be a great fit. I keep my drill bits in cases with the size so I know what’s what.

I was looking to buy some of these components but Hobby Zone said they ceased all product shipments to North America as of December 2020 (indefinitely as of right now). Do you know of a North America vendor who has them in stock? Hobby World USA has their products "on backorder" due to the Hobby Zone shipping suspension.

The small holes are for the wires where you put your tape. That way when you roll out the wire it doesn’t go every where.

I feel the need to be much neater and this has helped a lot.
This is another great review of this product. If I had a permanent space to do my modeling and painting I definitely would invest in this system.
Space is a real pain. The more I have, the more I fill it.
Kathy use that for your platiscard and spare scratch building sheets and odd and sods, I always seem to have a stash somewhere, look really good stuff keep looking at them

I haven't read through all the comments yet so not sure if anyone else has suggested this yet, but might be easier to use a copper mallet on the magnets as it won't stick to them. or plastic headed, or a lump of plastic/hard wood/etc between the magnet and normal hammer. You get the idea :) Hope you're keeping safe and well! :)
Great ideas. I thought I did use a piece of wood between. This was a while ago though and I’ve built a few over time!

Thanks for your review. The pity is that they aren't available in the U.S. What we have are big pieces in a fixed configuration so the user must adapt their stuff to the cabinet rather than the other way around. Modules can be adapted to the user rather than...
I know plenty of people have found them in the US.

I really like the HobbyZone system. The wall mounted paint racks are just great. They come in sizes for either Tamiya or Vallejo sized bottles. I think they make the corner paint racks in Vallejo sizes as well as the larger ones you have. I'd suggest to dry fit everything before gluing the first time you put something together. The instructions are ok but getting things mixed up is possible.

@@KathyMillatt HobbyZone actually makes an "adapter" they call a paint hanger base. It allows the wall racks to stand on the table/bench and connect to the rest of their system.

Great product sample video Kathy - I need something like this given it takes me about 1.5 seconds to mess up my just-tidied modeling work space!

Those certainly do look useful, if you have space for them . Unfortunately I do not have a dedicated workspace so keep all my tools, paints etc in a fold-out toolbox and do my modelling on a laptray.
I think they do one of those too. As most of my modelling is in front of camera now, I do far less on my knees in front of the TV but it’s great for getting stuff done.

I searched and found HobbyZone system is available in the USA through www.hobbyworld-usa.com Search their site for "modular workshop system" Also through Amazon. There are several sizes of paint bottle holders, 36mm, 23mm, and for squeeze tubes of oil paint.

For those in North America (January 2021), this product (Hobby Zone components) are not shipping to North America. Hobby Zone is a United Kingdom company and they've suspended all shipments to North America as of December 2020.

Wouldn't it be simpler to couple the new magnets onto the existing unit's built-in magnets, assemble the new unit, then attach the new unit to these magnets once complete? Or are the holes inaccessible from the outside once construction is complete?
the magnets are a very tight fit and as you saw you need to use a hammer or similer to put them in. if you did this once assembled you might end up breaking the module.
Totally agree, I’d hate to have to hammer the finished unit, especially as some aren’t flat on top to turn upside down and hammer in the base.

I've taken a look at the prices and I think IMHO they are sensibly priced. They're not for me though, they wouldn't improve my modeling (!) and it's money I'd rather spend on locos. The old dressing table I have is fine!
I use these daily so for me they’ve been worth it but everyone has different requirements.

Will Dremel bits fit in the hole section?
If not, they’d be easy to open out the small amount extra. They would be useful there.
If had this system I'd drill halfway through the top of first layer and halfway the bottom then place magnets in the holes so the magnets line up and they would keep them together. When you move they come apart very easily.
Your paint bottles now if you had a long shelf on top this has to be ish 3 bottles wide. two wheels either side with a belt with paint bottle holders holding the bottles in place. The surface would have to be very slippery. On the outside of the two wheels you'll need (o this cruve is to hold the bottles in place as they go around the corner.
Now the slats that hold the bottles in place make a load of them similar to an elevator that's on it's side now the bottle holders will hold the bottles. The design is similar to a canning factory conveyor belt one this will go round the shelf.
This if surface is super slippery your have to design Rope ? chain to hold altoghther. Oh yeah you could make it electric using old battery drill. So you sit reach for paint press button for bottle to rotate until you get the one you need.
This does have magnets that hold it together very effectively. Were you planning on adding more?
That is NOT FOR TAPE lol it's for pliers!!! You hang your pliers on the stick. @6:30 It would be incredibly inconvenient for rolls of tape, although you could take out the tube and just sit the tape there if you like- bc there is a front bit, they will not roll away :) Good review... liked the tip about the magnets- ty for that.
I do put my tape in front... but my pliers are closer to hand or in a drawer. I may have to come up with something similar as they are really inconvenient at the moment.
@@KathyMillatt My pliers are the same.. it's one reason I have been looking at this system...I would like things better at hand. But at least the tape won't roll away bc it has that little lip there. I considered the american paper roll unit, placed sideways and sitting at the side, for my pliers... I have so many.
I like that idea for the pliers. I may have to make a unit for the top of my drawers.

Fourth video at least! Lol. They're good modules though. I've been using them since the summer and they're easily my favourite. Look good, nice and substantial, partly wipe clean and well thought out.

i think the dowl on the tool rack would work well as a nipper/ pliers holder. rather then rolls of tape. i think thats how they show it on there website. ;)

Pat McDermott easily. I went with pliers in the end as taking rolls off to use them was a pain.
I don't understand why theyre so expensive, or why there isn't a bundle deal. Unfortunate. I cant spend 25$ per unit.
They’re much cheaper than that in the UK and I thought you could get them as cheaply in the US.

I haven’t tried but they are just MDF so presumably yes. The melamine sections may need a primer first.

only with an airbrush after they have been pre-shaded and add a contrasting shade as a highlight finishing with a hi-gloss laquour!
Quite a good idea. Is is made from MDF? I wonder how long that melamine surface will last?
Time will tell. It helps they don’t get a lot of mess on them as storage units.
