To appreciate a movie such as this, one must put themselves in the perspective of the time when it was made, the same requirement for a person to be able to understand history. Not everyone can, or wants to do that. If it is more than 15 or 20 years old, they have no interest or appreciation of it.

This version is worth watching just to behold the perfect beauty of Miss Anna Lee's smile.
But a better version of the movie is the 1950 film with Stewart Grainger and Deborah Kerr.
Also, read the book, as the characters are more complete than any movie can make them.
The old witch Gagool just cannot be presented effectively in any movie. Only the book can give her the personality Haggard intended.

Paul Robeson, who played Umbopa was a very fine Baratone and was featured in musical films during the 1930's &1940's.

Really enjoyed this, feel like there is probably some fascinating stories about the production. Apparently Robeson was upset because they ended up reshooting scenes to make the african natives seem more stereotypical. I get similar feelings to watching little rascals(our gang), where theres the typical racism of the time but also its way ahead of its time in inclusiveness.

Like I mentioned it is similar to little rascals, which while still having racist stereotypes to certain degree it had black kids friends with white kids. Stymie was often portrayed as being very clever, and was a loved character. Well not by all, both this movie and little rascals(our gang) were criticized by racist of the time.
