Hello! Local resident here!! For families there are arcades, boating lake, cinema, tenpin bowling, indoor play centre, donkey rides (!), leisure centre and the steam train (did you miss this??!!); this is apart from the activities laid on at the holiday parks (at the end of the beach, where those lovely people were recommending you walk), though you have to stay there to get in. There is an open top bus that goes along the seafront all the way to the parks during the summer too. Meridian Park (just next to the Signal Box Inn you visited) often has events on throughout the year too - fairs and gigs etc. Cleethorpes is a great family friendly resort and it's cheap too! A good Sunday lunch on the promenade can be had for around £9 (The Punch Bowl), top class fish and chips for around the same price (see Ernie Becketts and Steels in the Market Square). Don't be put off by the negative press peeps! Welcome to Cleethorpes!!

And how did I forget, there are 12 (I think) mini golf courses and a an open air paddling pool (at the back of the boating lake, next to the beach).

@@travellingveteran You are most welcome! I hope you enjoy your return visit for Armed Forces Day too - the crowds can be huge, the atmosphere is wonderful!

As a kid in the late 1850;s I often went from my home town of Scunthorpe to Cleethorpes for many a dy trip. I back then thought that Seaside railways stations were next to the beach as in Cleethorpes.I left Scunthorpe in the mid to late 1960 and I think the last time i was there was 1966. I now live in Essex (Brentwood) and Southend Victoria station is about a mile from the sea.

Spent quite some time working in nearby Immingham and staying in Cleethorpes back in the 80s and 90s. It was a great place. Plenty of nightlife, the locals knew how to have a great time without any trouble. Every night (almost) was a party. Happy days!

Yeah, as you said it's the same story for all these resorts over the UK obviously the biggest factor was the package holidays in the 70s/80s, but the biggest culprit for the neglect and allowing them to fall into such disrepair is the local councils.. They seem to have plenty of money to invest in hairbrained stupid schemes that will attract no-one whatsoever but ignore the real problems and allow them to fester beyond repair

We went to Cleethorpes a few years back (Summer just before pandemic) as we had to pick up some scaffold parts from Grimsby and found it ok, the fish and chips were fine and not too expensive and we tried a couple of bars on the front which again reasonable price, not a rip off like some seaside resorts😎

You will enjoy the Armed Forces Weekend fella. It's usually buzzing. If you're up for a longer walk , can take a hike to Tetney Lock. Nice pub there which does awesome food. Used to go down there as kid and back but last time, I was too knackered to walk back. Fortunately, my aunt lives that way. There is a bus but it doesn't run very often. Nowt much in Grimsby but there's a great museum in under the Town Hall and the fishing Heritage museum is worth a look. Cleethorpes (or Meggies as we call it) is much maligned but as that fella said, it's not a bad looking place. Shame, some people want to destroy things though. Steels is one of the most popular Fish ''n' chip places. It's like walking back to the 60s. There are plenty of other choices though. For brekkie, Browns has always been good value for money.

@@travellingveteran Thank you for your video. It is nice to see all those places where I have been, Cleethorpes as well as Grimsby. It gave me many memories, good memories. Have you heard about the organized public discussion in Grimsby. It is about possibilities for developing and growing the area. It has already started. Have a good time at the Armed Forces Day. Unfortunately, I will not be there. And a big thanks to everyone who gave me a warm welcome.

It used to be wonderful before it had that dreadful phase of so called improvements! Modernisation can be ruination! I particularly loved an out door lido as a kid. It was a seawater one with stepped seating and on the front. The walks along the prom looked inviting with well kept gardens and little lace curtained cafes sold cuppas with saucers and tables had pretty cloths. The teas on offer were sandwiches such as egg and cress freshly made and assorted cakes and pastries, again hand made. A lot of hard work and thoroughness was the reason it was so special, and the shops behind the front were smart and well stocked, an inviting temptation for shoppers and browsers.

Watch lots of these types of videos. I think we have forgotten about many of our traditional holiday resorts. Many simply need investment and a rethink about how to make them appeal to the new generation.
