  • Open introduced the U.P. a few years ago. Now on its third iteration, the UP definitively carved the way through mud, gravel and dirt and established itself as the ultimate gravel bike.

      Thank you. I think any cranks with that taper mount system (sram/praxis) will have that type of crank spin. The days of Shimano octalink and Campagnolo square tapers are long behind us. Thanks for watching!

      This is the second OPEN frame build up I've seen with that sketch crank spin. Wondering if there's any truth to this...czcams.com/video/qCgpVv07gUk/video.html

      @@2amRendezvous Hi... let me assure you that it is not the case. I have explained above why, and, as much as I respect Hambini for the knowledge he has, he did also explain quite accurately why those cranks don’t spin well. It is what it is with tapered systems.
      I measure all bikes that I assemble and this one, like all other Open frames, was perfect.
      If you guys want cranks that spin endlessly, I suggest you watch my Bianchi build video. Then again, that is older technology from which all manufacturers moved away and many people still wonder why.
      You also need to consider that if I was to spin that crank today, after many hours of riding, it would probably spin smoothly. Things have to settle in.
      Thanks for watching.

      @@AndreasIhm thanks for this clarification! I too was worried because someone suggested that Hambini video after I ordered my Open UP, but my mechanic also assured me, that those frames are perfect and if not, it will go back.

    Gravel bike category is probably the most versatile of any bike category existing today. You can go from single tracks to road races with the right tires. Why would someone want an 1x on a bike which is intended to be versatile? 1x works for bike category which have a narrow use like fat bikes or soft tails but for a gravel bike you definitely want a 2x.

    • @michielnooren2076
      @michielnooren2076 Před 3 lety +1

      That is assuming you would only have one bike! Let's get real...nobody's got just one bike (n+1). People that do road races will never ever use a gravel bike for it! If I would buy a gravelbike I will definitely try to go for a 1x. Less components that can fail under the harsh conditions in which you use a gravelbike, less maintenance, less wear and tear,...

      @danielburningcrow Před 3 lety

      What he's building is pretty much the bike I ride … and I do not want a 2x GRX. 42/11-46 can do pretty much all I need and doesn't have the added complexity of 2x. The only drawback of a 1x is not the range but the spread of the gear steps … but that is not really an issue on gravel, only when you want to keep a steady cadence on the road. So, maybe a Campa Ekar one day … 😉

      @@kidShibuya if you care about jumps between gear ratios then your that gearing would be annoying. But if it works for you then good for you. There are some of its who don't want 1x

      disagree. 1x benefits are just to good. Just use a wider range cassette and you are good.

    Why does both STIs have shift leavers, when it’s a 1x?

    • @AndreasIhm
      @AndreasIhm  Před 3 lety +3

      Good question and glad you noticed! This is a project bike that might eventually be converted to a 2X.
      Also: some customers enjoy having the possibility to shift from both hands and also use the A switch on both levers to either shift or control accessories.
      Plus, for the cx racers out there, if you crash on one side, you can always use the other sode switch to shift your gears and make it to the pit.
      The way it is set-up right now is the left is a mirror of the right lever + the A-switch on the left lever shifts to a easier gear, the A-switch on the right side shifts to a harder gear. It is actually great to use and I sometimes wish I could have the same :)

      @@AndreasIhm I'm sorry, really not trying to be an arse, that was not a "weak" spin, it was a lot of friction. You should be able to basically just touch it with a finger and get a better spin. Totally not a slight on you as a mechanic, you can only work with the products you're given.
