Narrator: "the beast was matched; met his doom. Limb torn from the beast.
Grendel: "well, this sucks. Imma go back home, lie down, amd bleed out for awhile."
"No time for foolishness! Only fighting to the death." -Beowulf
Hey hi can u say me what is the quote of halga and segimund?
Respect to the soldier that helped Beowulf fight the dragon
Wiglaf?

Holy hell. This showed up in my suggested videos. I remember renting the VHS of this from the library as a kid, and being absolutely enthralled with it. Thus began my lifelong love for mythology and epics of all sorts.
I remember watching this in my Senior year of high school.
Little gems like this are why I love CZcams.
I will nitpick they left a few things from the original poem.
1) The lake where Grendel's Mother lived was full of all kinds of various monsters.
2) Grendel's Mother actually grabbed Beowulf and dragged him into her lair where she attempted to stab him.
3) One of Beowulf's men attempted to attack Grendel only to end up as monster chow.
4) Beowulf died due to a poisonous bite to the neck by Hordeshyrde (the dragon).
Aside from that, this is a pretty faithful adaptation of the poem.
and Beowulf stabs Grendels mother in the neck with the giant sword
I know this is an old comment but where did you get the name of the dragon from?
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 I think the original commentator just got something confused. The poem doesn't give the dragon a name and "hordes hyrde" is just used to describe the dragon as "the treasure's guardian".
And the hobbits throw the ring in the volcano.
@@redere4777 He doesn't know how to change his user icon and is using his real name, so he's probably an old guy. Which means he might have even been there. >_>
The animation style and the narration made it feel like the ancient epic it was. Great stuff.
Excellent rendition of the epic poem Beowulf, I fall asleep to this video every night!
And I bet you awaken every morning with pride for your culture. Epic poem wonderfully conveyed in this animation.

Like those Shakespeare adaptation, this version of Beowulf is wonderfully done. A great introduction to a magical tale.
I found this very accurate compared to the story itself and also very well drawn in terms of animation. It also gives that perfect gloomy atmosphere which is intended to be in the script. I nearly shed a tear at the ending, Beowulf's death is a very sad yet epic and gloryful moment. All in all, I prefered a lot this little well-made movie to that Hollywood shit.
***** not my fault buddy
PMG that is true
Well said and the closest we get in live-action is the film The 13th Warrior (1999).
@@mercenaryknight5419 have you seen 'Beowulf & grendel'? It's pretty good. Not action-driven, nor does it cover the whole of the saga, but it is a beautiful film (it was filmed in iceland), with great performances from everyone, especially stellan skarsgaard and Gerard butler.
I heard it was good. ^^
Thank you for sharing this and for labelling it correctly this making it so easy to find. Great job uploader. Thanks again. Epic.
I watched this loads as a kid and just remembered it exists! In my child memory I was sure that this was at least an hour and a half long! 😂 thanks to the uploader, pure nostalgia trip watching this again at the age of 25! 👍🏼

In realms of time, where tales unfold,
A cartoon gem, I've come to behold.
Beowulf's grand saga, in animated guise,
A feast for the eyes, a true surprise.
Yet twenty-five years, it lay unseen,
A treasure hidden, a secret pristine.
I lament the gap, the years that passed,
When this masterpiece could have been amassed.
Oh, let the world know of this cartoon bright,
Where heroes clash, and monsters fight.
A tale of courage, of strength and might,
Beowulf's cartoon, a shining light.
The artistic dreamlike imagery reminds me of Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) and Shakespeare: The Animated Tales :)
better then the other movie version
Please tell me you don't mean the Ray Winstone one. There have been many crappy Beowulf films, but the 2007 one is my favorite movie of all time.
+Robert Chambers Sure it may be your favorite movie, but it shouldn't even be called Beowulf. The only similarities it shares with the poem are the names of characters and the antagonists.
read Beowulf and you will understand
anand altantsog yes
The only really good movie version is The 13th Warrior (1999).
I love watching stuff like this, has the same atmosphere as the claymation Canterbury tales and claymation Shakespeare's stories
This is one nostalgia trip. Remember watching this as a kid.
Definitely one of the top 10 short animation projects I've watched. It is super useful for my studies and has helped me learn the story better. The animation was a treat to watch.
What a wonderful piece of art! thank you very much for sharing this with us!

Proably the best version ever made than the 2007 film
my favorite rendition of beowulf.
and Beorn in The Hobbit was based off of Beowulf witch makes me feel like I am part of middle earth.
And Tolkien based Edoras on Heorot, and the people of Rohan on the Anglo-Saxons (Or reasonably, any proto-Germanic Dark Age warrior society). And the plot of a king, in the form of Theoden and Hrothgar, beset by an ill-fate but given new life by one of God's agents is brilliantly paralleled, rather than parodied, by the Lord of the Rings.
Amazing just amazing i am so glad that i came across this masterpiece what a beautiful narration what an amazing animation 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
One of my favourite stories as a child, still love it today. First time I have seen this .Thanks for sharing
This is very aesthetically pleasing. Overall, 1000 times better than that Robert Zemeckis one
Glad that I found that. Thanks for the upload!
Anyone else here because of school?
me
School is for chumps. I'm here because I love classic literature
One of my favourite stories by far.
Aw man, I remember this fondly. The animation is like no other and has stuck with me for years-I also remember the Moby Dick rendition done by these people!
Thank you so much for sharing this! I recorded it off of HBO back in the day, but my video copy got destroyed several years ago and I've really missed it.
The Dragon's just straight up Godzilla.
Well, dragon basically means, "serpent".
Godzilla is pretty much a dragon tho
The director of this film Yuriy Kulakov also made another great animation film "Knyaz Vladimir" 2004.
I honestly recommend you it. It's the best cartoon ever made in modern Russia.
No idea why but 4:22 made me choke with laughter. "Grendeeelllll..."

Lightning flash!
omg same nobody could ever take that seriously am I right lol
XD
anyone else remember when HBO had pretty good cartoon shows?
+Spellbinder Yes, yes, and yes. In addition to this, I watched their other show, Tales From Around The World. Well, it was called something like that. Either way, these are both a beloved part of my childhood.
I remember.
Not to mention HBO had Jim Henson' s The Storyteller. The 90's were beautiful in so many ways.
HBO bring back Spawn: The Animation pls
Spawn was the shit
Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought or why we died, no. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! My war pleases you, Crom. So grant me one request. Grant me revenge. And if you do not listen...then to Hell with you!
Shut the fuk up
Now that's what I call bravery.
Thanks for the upload!
This sounds and looks BEAUTIFUL
Absolutely great!!! Super clear!!! I needed for my history subject
I remember watching this on HBO in the 90 and being totally entranced with the story.
Thanks for sharing it with us
Very striking looking and well narrated.
loved this as I was growing up, the atmosphere, storytelling and animation style are perfect for the story. I've felt that some of this atmosphere has been lacking in other versions, there's just something special about this one.
odd way to depict grendel and his mother, much like swap monsters made of moss. fairly different.
Yeah I thought Crispin Glover was a more complex creature. I could almost feel sorry for him.
I've first watch beowulf in 2007 film.
It was awesome.
But the 1998 short film is also awesome.
Whoa! Thank you, so much, for sharing this!!! 🐻🐺🗡🛡
good movie! It captures the mood of the original story well!

This was actually really great!
Lupo Canis, thank you for this, of which I was ignorant, but now I have seen it.
This dragon is so damn creepy. I love the appearance of 80's/90's dragons, they were awkward, fat, slow, but scary as hell. I enjoy the modern Wyvern stuff, but dragons like Smaug from The Hobbit are the least scary and imposing thing I've ever seen lmao
I liked the speech around the seventeenth minute.
All the blood, sweat and tears our forefathers have spent to build us what they have left us, the death and suffering fighting foreigners who wanted to take what they envied, and now because of our womenfolk we wilfully hand it to the enemies who fought us tooth and nail for thousands of years. If only we could hook dynamo's up to the graves of our ancestors, we could power the world with how much they must spin in their graves.
I never thought I'd see this again. I seen it years ago in school.
Such a great story.
I'm glad even the auto-generated captions get the names right.
Stories sure haven`t changed much in the last 1000 years or so... The book was excellent also, imho. Great video; thanks for posting, Lupo Canis!
I don't know how long it took them to make or how much it cost. All I know is that it is that it is so much better than they Hollywood abortion of CGI they made with "Iy am 'ere to kiw yow monsta".
This is so much better.
Totally agree! The new CGI one ruined the great story.
But you have to admit, some of the soundtrack of the CGI thing was good.
It was the unnecessary butchery of the story alone (such as Beowulf becoming King of the Danes and Beowulf sleeping with Grendel's Mother) that really made it awful.
The closest we ever get to a good film of the story is The 13th Warrior (1999).
Wessex90 oh great another anti-cgi cry baby
Beautiful!
this is really good and easier to understand! thank you:D.
These are great! I wanted to introduce my daughter to Beowulf and this is the best of the videos for kids.
Yes, I'd guess that, though the monsters are still scary.
Beautiful.
They stand 18' foot tall and 9' foot wide, Are you gonna fight against the evil beings?
My dad showed me this when i it was first uploaded, i was about 3-4. Im 14 now. So many memories
I, as a non-literature-lover, can tell that this is a classic for a reason.
Inevitable tears at the end. ❤️
Noticed heavy amounts of surrealism.
great animation design!
I watched this at my school today
If Beowulf were born today, his name would be Chad.
I watched this at school and I love it so much I'm watching it at home
Yes. Derek Jacobi at the narration. A spooky take on the fairy tale. Before this it had been told to me via still pictures and barstool via a bbc schools Zigzag show on Anglo Saxon monks.
“Grendels Mother!”
I didn’t expect that one 😭
wow, i haven't seen this in many many years, excellent
. i love the dark mood and animation style, and surrealism
This is a great animation of Beowulf, faithful to the original.
wow this is a nice piece of animation
lovely!
damn this is so sweet
Beowulf is so strong.
Exellent!
I love how skullgirls implemented and referenced beo's epic into his storymode like:
How he deafeted grendel by ripping off his arm in a wrestling match
He also defeated Grendel's mother
Double (a shapeshifting monster) shapeshift into a dragon at the end
And many more

I like that this animetion tries to show the legend and not only fight scene :) I think if the animation was a little better that would make this movie a perfect animated film
