Beowulf is a saga from the part of Scandinavia that is today the middle of Sweden. Beowulf is so typical of the sagas the vikings told, so it could be taken straight from Sturlasson's Icelandic Sagas. Names, places, people - it's all typical Nordic in style. The connection between Britain and Scandinavia was established long before the era of the vikings. Their forefathers had traded with the British isles for hundreds of years before they became known as "vikings". The Anglosaxians and the Scandinavians were basically the same Germanic people with a similar language and a similar culture. Archeologists dug up a grave a couple of years ago in northern England and inside laid a man from the part of Scandinavia I mentioned above. The grave was dated to the 5th century a.d. and the remains was probably from a king or a jarl (earl). It's these early Scandinavians who brought the saga of Beowulf with them.
I'm convinced the core of the story is based on actual events, because the main characters actually have historical analogues - and it can also be cross-referenced with other Norse sagas (The Saga of Hrolf Kraki & Ynglinga Saga). The Saxon kingdom of East Anglia also had ties to the Geats, so the story likely either came over with them, or was introduced by visitors. Fanciful elements like the dragon and Grendel's mother were probably added much later, but personally I think the story centered around Beowulf (who could have been a Beserker based on his description on Hrolf Kraki) and the son of the king of the Heathobards who Hrothgar and his brother Halga defeated in a war in the late 5th/early 6th century.
What are you rambling on about.? Beowulf was written in Ænglisc (English to the uniformed). He is a legend from the southern Germanic tribes and is the best writing found in Europe. The poem is as old as the Original ÆNGLISC. Angles, Jutes, Frisii and Saxons. Before the writing was found he was lost in mouth. He was not in a Brothers Grimm book. He was uncovered in England. He is the story from the Ænglisc back to our Germanic roots.
I always admire England/English movies. They are worth of my money, time and effort. Elements of stories, the film makers always aims for perfection. Thank you I have learned a lot.
I truly enjoyed this when it first aired. I haven't seen it since. Some great actors that I've seen in a lot of British dramas over the years. So many of you pseudo professors are reading way too much into this. It's fantasy and meant to be enjoyed for what it is. It's obviously not factual. R.I.P. William Hurt.
In Tolkien biographies I read that he studied Beowolf and did a translation of it, and that it was at the root of his fiction. Seeing this I can see the influences of it in Lord of the rings.
This show bears little resemblance to the epic poem Beowulf in any way besides its name. While it is true that Beowulf and Germanic mythology had great influence on Tolkien's fictional world, this show should not be looked at as an adaptation of the precursor to The Lord of the Rings. If anything The Lord of the Rings had more of an influence on the creation of this show than the original poem did.
Wow I really love this ♥️ movie n just start watching it ,the father protect his son by stAnd n fight n told his son to run 🏃🏇,n his son was so brave he hide & killed the 🐻 bearwolf .he is a warrior from birth .I appreciate the start 💂🐻 bearwolf is my hero 🌟good watch guy's 📱📺🎥🎬 worth watching 👊
Those Danish mountains sure used to be bigger than they are nowadays. Also, the massive plastic axe really packs a punch. All this is in the first 5 minutes of the movie, I think I'll just stay and watch :)
You should check out the graphic novel by Neil gaiman. He researched it thoroughly and a lot easier to read. Haha. Pretty sure the film with Ray Winston and Anthony Hopkins is based on this version.
If you aren't aware in 2014 J.R.R Tolkien's Translation of Beowulf was released and is very much worth looking into as well. He was a scholar of Old English and taught it at University for twenty years or thereabouts.
@@colvingenealogy The Angle language and Saxon Language were both different, Old English language was a patois of the Angle and Saxon languages, they called it Aenglisch in the times of Alfred the Great, Edward and Athelstan. It was Alfred's dream to unite the three kingdoms of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes together, the South of Britain, Wessex, Mercia and Kent (Cant) and call it Aenglaland or Englaland, the Midlands and the North was under Danish rule, it was Athelstan who united those three kingdoms under one king and then defeated the Danes and brought Northumbria and the north under one Anglo Saxon king, Athelstan himself.
I have a question if I may? I love this, but can't find episode 3 in 🤷 the ranking order. Shame, because I'm a 'buff' for these kind of things. Maybe an error made it disappear?
I enjoy lots of for watching short film but has a lots of reality to the present situation among them animal lover is great for our social environment.
This version of Beowulf is unknown in classical English literature. However, like the old tale the tv series does not lack in interesting episodes. Thanks for the upload.
You shouldn't laugh. DNA determined that the skeletal remains of a woman believed to be one of the first settlers of Europe had very dark skin, dark eyes, and dark straight hair. And the Vikings were NOT predominantly blonde. The image you are depicting is from films, not actual history.
Seeing this for the first time in 2024.
Wonderful 😮😮😮

Sensacional. Faz-nos sonhar e imaginar quão difícil era a vida durante o período da idade medieval. Nota máxima eu dou a essa série.

Glory and their kings in days gone by.
How princess displayed their courage then.
Merci! Kieran Bew est mon british acteur préféré,alors merci encore!

The Viking legend of Beowulf the Geat had as many double headed axe's ! As they had F18 Fighter Jet's
its a fantasy am also sure they didnt have demons and dragons🎉
Thank you. Couldn't watch it on cable, will enjoy it now.
I subscribed, Sandy! Brilliant upload! Well done!
I used to recite the epic poem when I was a student of Literature...
Is it just me or does the theme song sound similar to that of Game of Thrones? Love it
MyRootsMyHeritage I was thinking the same thing
That was my first thought as soon as I heard it.. and the intro is also a knock off of a real showl Game of Thrones.

Tolkien was a professor of Old Norse and Anglo Saxon, and The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings were very heavily influenced by Norse Mythology.

No one even botheted taking this off youtube 😂
This film has no correlations with the Beowulf poem. Beowulf is supposed to be a figure larger than the average man.
And far stronger
Agree!!😅
They were afraid to use an unknown actor, that fit the description!
@@dragonwicce1006 Aren't heroes always " larger than life "..?

anyone who thinks Vikings or Game of Thrones is better than Beowulf needs their head read. Four years after they cancelled it, I still miss it.
I don't understand why people like you don't realize that you've said absolutely nothing factual. It's only your opinion.
Talk about a tired trope !! The aliens have taken our women !
another tv series where they dont have an egg on display - might keep watching it
