  • These cats need to die. They’ll go to Starclan anyway and have long happy afterlives where they can still communicate with their kin. Please just kill them.

    Ive honestly always thought a famine could be a good way to kill off a lot of cats. The clans grow too big and all of a sudden they don't have enough food to support them. I think it would provide lots of drama and kill off a lot of the old characters as older cats would have a harder time making it through the famine.

    Did you notice how many filter words were in the second passage you read?? "Bristlefrost noticed", "Bristlefrost felt", "Bristlefrost remembered", "Bristlefrost became aware". These filter words distance the reader from the character/scene. In the passage from Rising Storm, Fireheart's pov uses none of those filter words. Context aside, the prose itself is hindering our ability to experience the characters' emotions.
    (Erins, take note.)
    On a different note, your narration and voices when reading the passages was AWESOME!

    • @HAUUNTEDGRRL
      @HAUUNTEDGRRL Před 2 lety +15

    Could you make a follow up video regarding how death works in Warriors?
    Like, when a cat dies, or someone kills another, there’s LITTLE TO NO REACTION. This might just be a personal gripe of mine with the series, but I feel like death should be more prominent, *especially* when a POV character is responsible. It’s DEATH! It should have an IMPACT on people! (Or, cats, whatever.)
    This only really ever happens when it’s relevant to the plot, it’s DOTC, it’s Hollyleaf, or it’s in the first/second series. (Redtail, Silverstream, Whiteclaw, Bluestar, Yellowfang, Feathertail, Hawkfrost, Tallstar, Mudclaw, etc.) And yes, I’m aware that there are a few exceptions like Firestar and Leafpool but you know what I mean.
    This is just an idea I had and you definitely don’t have to use it. :p

      @saml815 Před 3 lety +17

      It's so interesting because I absolutely agree, but then you have DOTC which is a relatively "new" arc and, imo, handles loss and grief pretty well (at least well by Warriors standards)... Characters love their siblings even when they're from different litters, cats are depressed over the loss of mates and children for more than a single chapter, etc... So that means the team CAN write these relationships, they just choose not to. And that's the most frustrating part.

    I think the reason Bristlefrost didn’t react much to Rosepetal, Berrynose, and Stemleaf’s deaths is because if she did then that would take away attention from the main conflict, and oh no, we can’t have that! Remain focused or something, I don’t know lol. It doesn’t really make that much sense to not have her grieve for at least Rosepetal and Stemleaf! If she was given that chance, than maybe she could have more personality in Darkness Within.
    It really sucks that these characters’s deaths weren’t given more attention, but hopefully in Daisy’s Kin and Spotfur’s Rebellion they get some respect!

  • @jenetikitty
    @jenetikitty Před 3 lety +66

    Honestly, I think Graystripe's going to be dead before the series is over.
    Graystripe's Vow brought him back to the foreground for a moment. Let's look at what that book contained: Graystripe displaying leadership skills in the past, Graystripe displaying leadership skills in the present with Warriorclan, and the moonstone breaking. Also, Graystripe had the feelign that the clans were changing, and realized they didn't need Starclan.
    So what I gather is this: whatever's interfering with starclan is Big -- big enough to block them away and big enough to let Ashfur come back and big enough to shatter the moonstone, and interfere with life and death itself. Beyond that: I think Graystripe is going to return to the clans, he's going to see the mess going on right now in the SPOILERY PREVIEW OF THE NEXT BOOK NOT RELEASED YET. IF YOU HAVN"T READ THE PREVIEW, THE NEXT FEW SENTENCES MIGHT HAVE SPOILERS, THOUGH I"LL TRY TO BE VAGUE. SPOILERS!!!! and take charge of the matter because of the circumstances and act as a level head between the 5 clans. He's probably going to sacrifice himself heroically at some point, possibly to save his best friend's daughter, or something.
    and I think we're going to see the warrior code change. they're foreshadowing it pretty hard.

    Listening to you read the part where Yellowfang dies made my eyes water up a bit, then you went to the reading of Stemleaf's death & it was disappointing in comparison. His death felt more of a death of a background character the main protag barely knew than a death of an ally, a friend & most importantly a romantic crush.
    Then you have her mentor also dying which gets barely any attention, like she TRAINED you & your reaction is basically "Oh no! Well, anyways..."
    StarClan's sake, even Runningwind's death had more of a punch to it & I thought that death was insanely glanced over as a whole.

Heck, it's sad to see that the cats represented on the last three covers on the latest arc are all not from TBC or even AVoS and the arc just derails its plot to deal with the aftermath of a romance subplot from *TNP*. I will always tear up at Yellowfang's death. We can _feel_ Fireheart's pain and desperation. We've gotten to know Yellowfang just as he did. The detail of her wheezing breaths, smoke burned lungs, and inability to move help cement her determination to talk to Fireheart, to thank him and confide her fears to him despite being in so much pain. Fireheart tries to reassure her, listing off every amazing thing she's done and how good of a cat she was to ease her fear of being cast out by StarClan or somehow being a bad cat. It's to comfort her but, as we watch her die, it's partially to comfort himself.
    Meanwhile, that latest death feels cold. He's by other dead cats. Bristlefrost is talking about herself and her grief and missed opportunities. This isn't about or for him. There were no last words. Though honestly, having no last words can work very, _very_ well in some cases. Here, it did not. There were also filter words on Bristlefrost's case, furthering our emotional connection further.

      I don't know. Killling many relevant characters at once has the risk of making their death overshadow each other. Which is definitively what happened for me. Every ghost who died? Meaningless, cause they already had a more impactful death before. Firestar? I saw it coming from ten thousand miles away, and also making him the fourth cat is boring. I'd say that only Hollyleaf's death worked for me because it happened during a personnal confrontation(Ivypool and Hawkfrost)where the danger felt real. But even for her, I got let down by her last conversation with Leafpool. She says like two lines and then she's dead.

    I like writing cats give final words to their friend/family- if they get the chance to speak. Some of my OC’s- like Storkfeather, Mousepaw, Smallpaw, and Birdpaw- die before they even know what happened. My favorite deaths that I have planned so far are Shard’s, Bushpelt’s, Brookpelt’s, and Furzesong’s.
    In a super edition that leads in to an arc, ThunderClan’s leader Larchstar is abducted by twolegs. While finding his way home, he collects kittypets to join a dying ThunderClan. He finds a group of rogues with a nasty leader named Sycamore. Sycamore comes from a long line of cats who force all she-cats to be their mates and tells other toms who can and cannot be their mates. Larchstar convinces a large portion of them to run away and join ThunderClan, one of which is Shard, a Siamese she-cat that is the mother of Sycamore’s kits, Flame and Patches. While running away, Sycamores group herds them into a narrow tunnel. Seeing that there was no way to outrun Sycamore, Shard licks each of her kits on the head, makes Larchstar swear he will take care of them, then confronts Sycamore before anyone can stop her, knowing she’ll die. Her last words are to tell her kits to be the best warriors they can be. When she dies, she makes sure she falls in a way that makes her body block the narrow path. To continue the chase, Sycamore has to remove her body, giving Larchstar and the group time to escape. Larchstar adopts Flame and Patches, renaming them Flamekit and Patchkit. Both are extremely effected by Shard’s death and go in different directions. Patchkit chooses to be a warrior that honors her mother by living for herself and is named Patchcloud, while Flame chooses to honor his mother with every breath her takes and is named Flameshard in her honor. He learns throughout apprentice training with his mentor Splashheart how to live for both himself and his mother and the two eventually becomes mates. One of the couples also names a kit Shardkit after her, who goes on to be named Shardtalon.
    Bushpelt was one of the loners Larchstar found. He and a ThunderClan born she-cat named Hawkclaw becomes mates and have a daughter named Hollykit together before retiring when Hollykit is an apprentice named Hollypaw. The come out of retirement to help Hollypaw and the arc’s ThunderClan protagonist Shellpaw on a quest. In the middle of a battle, Hollypaw is pinned down and about to be killed when Bushpelt saves her. He’s badly injured and uses the last of his strength to tell Shellpaw how glad he is he became a warrior, tell Hawkclaw how much he loves her, and tell Hollypaw how proud he is of her, also playfully threatening to come back from the dead if Hollypaw dares to name any future kits after him. When they return, Shellpaw and Hollypaw are given their warrior ceremonies, Shellpaw being named Shellfeather to honor his bond with his father, Robinsong. Hollypaw interrupts her own ceremony to request she be named Hollybush in honor of her father, which Larchstar agrees to. Hollybush and Shellfeather becomes mates and spend the next book building a stronger bond together before being thrown back into the trouble surrounding the Clans.
    Brookpelt was made a warrior at the end of the super edition and was the mother of the ShyClan protagonists Furzesong and Birchfrost. She was forced to have kits with Hailwhisker- a cat she didn’t love- by her leader. When Birchfrost comes out as lesbian, Brookpelt disowns her, which hurts Birchfrost and makes her cynical because they had a strong bond. When Birchfrost is exiled for her sexuality, Birchfrost realizes her mistake and is happy when her son brings Birchfrost home, but quickly realizes she damaged their relationship beyond repair. Her secret relationship with Tigerfur- a tom her leader disapproved of for his lack of hatred for other Clans- is revealed when she has his kits. She named one of her new sons Birchkit after her daughter, but Birchfrost takes it the wrong way, thinking her mother is trying to “replace her” with a “new Birchkit” which leads to more conflict. Meanwhile, Furzesong has been made Clan leader, Furzestar, and hasn’t even been congratulated by his mother as she is so focused on her new litter and fixing things with Birchfrost. Resentment grows and he wishes things would go back to normal, that his family could get back to how they used to be, when Hailwhisker took an interest in their training and Brookpelt always gave them encouragement. The former SkyClan leader who never had 9 lives starts filling his head with nonsense. He exiles several cats, Birchfrost and Tigerfur included, when the former leader suggests it. Then helps the evil RiverClan leader try to retake control of RiverClan, with aid from an occult group he had met previously. Birchfrost, Tigerfur, ThunderClan, and some WindClan cats come to help. Hailwhisker tries to kill Tigerfur, but Brookpelt gets between them. Tigerfur and Birchfrost kill Hailwhisker and Brookpelt’s final words are an apology to Birchfrost.
    After her mother’s death, Birchfrost confronts Furzestar, taking his first life from him. In StarClan, Brookpelt apologizes to him too. Furzestar chooses to step down as leader after talking with her and she tells him that because of Birchfrost hatred for her Clan, she couldn’t be leader, despite being Furzestar’s deputy. But she promises the medicine cat will be told who StarClan picks when they are ready and to just allow allow her (the medicine cat) to leader while he waits as RiverClan’s leader was just killed and his deputy was ready to take his place. Furzestar agrees, allows himself to be held prisoner when he returns to the living world, and is surprised along with everyone else when the cat chosen to replace him is Doveheart, Birchfrost’s mate who had originally come from the occult group. The ceremony goes fine, Furzestar returns to being Furzesong and Doveheart becomes Dovestar. Then Furzesong decides to leave the Clans, self exile to atone for his actions. Birchfrost, Dovestar, and his pregnant mate, Squirreltail, beg him jot to, but he does. He is captured by the twoleg place rogues Larchstar had encountered before, only they’re now led by Shred- Sycamore’s son and killer- and the former SkyClan leader is among them. His younger half brother, Birchkit, is now Birchpaw and Birchfrost’s apprentice. He gets captured too, and the former SkyClan leader tries to kill him, but Furzesong saves him. He’s badly injured and just barely gets Birchpaw back to SkyClan camp before collapsing. He meets his kits for the first time and says goodbye o Squirreltail and Birchfrost before dying. The ShadowClan protagonist is a medicine cat and he speaks to her in StarClan when she next goes to the Moonpool, giving her the prophecy that leads into the next arc.

    You obviously raise a good point about the older characters being recognizable for older fans, and I think that's absolutely why the Erin's keep them around. But as an older reader, personally, it's definitely super annoying to have all of these useless background characters-- it makes the writing seem so much worse and it makes it more obvious that the writers and editors don't really see any value in them other than to beef up the cast. I'd much rather have old characters killed off and actually have newer ones be given a personality!! It's especially annoying that, as you mentioned, TBC has only killed off characters that are related to the plot and thus have SOME kind of personality... Like say what you want about Berrynose being a jerk or whatever, but at least he has a singular, identifiable character trait!!
    Also, in my observation, the big cast is detrimental to younger readers too. My 9yo niece just started The Sight and is already complaining about how many cats there are! She could hardly remember the generic background characters of the first 2 arcs to begin with, there's absolutely no way she'll be able remember characters like... Idk, Hollytuft? Eaglewing? Thriftear?

    I feel like the best course of action the warrior series could take would be to just straight up skip several generations into the future.
    Have a new kitty society that is "new" and "changed", for the better or worse.
    They could take many more creative liberties this way, especially when creating new characters.
    You could talk about the descendants of Firestar (for that marketing strenght), but they are so removed from their cat heritage they don't really know who Firestar really is, or how he acted. Maybe make one of them one of the worst villains the clans has ever seen (oh the misery).
    Or introduce new rules and customs never seen before because they don't fit the current narrative easily.
    Just a whole world of posibilities.

The only two living cats to die were Bristlefrost (a point of view cat, a breakthrough… at the cost of being so damn confusing, screw you Dark Water), and Graystripe, a cat that should have died at least in the last arc because he’s an elder. Oof.

    there was more of a balance between mortality and births for the first 2 series' and first 4-5 super editions. It makes me wonder whether the lack of characters dying is the Erin's way of trying to change their image to be more palatable (since the series is more popular than ever). At this point there has to be nearly 30+ cats in each clan.

    What I think should happen is that an arc should be focused on an event like The Great Hunger that Goosefeather predicted and the protagonists have to bring everyone together in order to survive, with Gray Wing and Pebble Heart being the ones who brings the prophecies this time and they call back to their time when we see them. And fairly quickly in the book its Spring yet there is no prey, and it progresses into Summer and some cats are starving now. Second book starts with some deaths, territories at first get more focus and we get first arc kind of battles. The protagonists would get the clans to resolve their differences by the end of the series and they have to work together. The next series has it at the start but returns to a pseudo status quo by the third book.

Much as I adore the first series, I'm tired of the story always using it as a crutch. A complete timeskip would give us a new cast to enjoy and get to know all over again, with new story potential. IDK, maybe some of the younger characters in the new generation could be cranky old elders, but even that's unnecessary.
    Plus, for new readers it would make a good jumping-on point.

    Honestly I kinda have a strange opinion on this, but I don't think that the population should remain small (not just for Thunderclan). I know that real life cat colonies are very small, but litters of cats should be MUCH BIGGER. I know warrior cats is very unrealistic, but I just find it strange how cats can only have a maximum of four. Irl cats can have a LOT more. Plus to sustain a large population without incest you'll need more cats.
    Of course it will also be a challange to give each one character. Also, giving all the other four clans a equal population to Thunderclan.

    You’d think that cats in the wild would die easily. Especially because they fight each other

      Yeah, fights rarely happen, and when they do, it's because of an oustide force

      Actually, no. Solitary territorial animals(like cats) very rarely kill each other. But to be fair, cats here aren't solitary, and monkeys for example do kill each other in battle.

    You know it says something when I'm scrolling through the alliances and I see say lilyheart and my first though was "wait.... She is still alive? We literally havent seen her in years!"
    The population could have been curved if when going into avos they had legacy kits but had half of them either die of random causes or didn't make it to adult hood.. I hate to say it but give us more snowkits! Not only will it resonate with fans but we could have meaningful characters without having a clan the size of a small country! I also agree though kill all of the older characters off, if they were warriors by the end of power of three they need to go, have the oots gen be the senior warriors and everyone else follows shop have twigbranch be the new dustpelt, have blossom fall in the back leers den Bumblestripe... Somewhere, have ivypool as leader and maybe bris or sparkpelt as deputy, get some newer characters up there.

      I think some of the most useless cats in ThunderClan are Leafshade, Honeyfur and Larksong (maybe not as much as his sisters), in my opinion, because at the end of OOTS, Lilyheart was only a kit, but in the first books of AVOS, she is a queen. I am aware there is quite a large gap between the two arcs, but it just feels wrong, kinda like the Violetshine situation. It goes to show for the infinite time that the authors keep adding characters without killing the older cats. Honeyfur and Leafshade have done nothing in the books, but at least Larksong had some minor moments until he died.

      Also, I noticed that the newer protagonists don't barely get into any higher position and after the arc ends, they just become background characters.
