What's the advantage of using hakoken over shakanetsu for Ryu or weak shoryu over strong shoryu for Ken? Doesn't skakanetsu come out and travel at the same speed as hadoken just with more damage? And if shoryuken is meant to kill, why would you ever want to use the weak version instead of the strong one, which does more damage? Just a question that I've wanted an answer to.
For Ryu:
Surprisingly, each Hadoken level is faster than its equivalent Shakunetsu level (Light Hado is faster than light Shaku, medium hado is faster than medium Shaku, etc.). In addition, Hadoken travels farther than its equivalent Shakunetsu level. Lastly, Hadoken is one hit while Shakunetsu is multi hit. This is important in some matchups such as Bowser and Kazuya, where they can armor through the weaker hits of Shakunetsu but not the single hit of Hadoken.
For Ken:
Medium shoryu is usually preferred over heavy shoryu after an up-air ladder because the medium version sends further in the air than the heavy version for some reason (the difference is pretty big). Also, it might be done for consistency reasons since heavy shoryu is notorious for not having all its hits connect, especially at higher percentages.
For both Ken and Ryu, hadoken (and Ryu's shaku) has three variants: weak, medium, strong. Strong ones are the fastest, weak is slowest. Strong of course does the most damage, but doesn't last on screen for long. A weak hadoken is way more of a stage hazard because it's out for so long. Opponents obviously don't wanna get hit by it, so they try to jump around it or shield it, which leaves them more vulnerable to a call-out aerial or grab from Ken/Ryu (example of this at 1:42). Weak hado/shaku is also great at catching opponents trying to roll away from Ken/Ryu, because 9/10 times the opponent will just roll along with the fireball and get hit by it.
For Ryu, shakunetsu hits multiple times and does great damage, but doesn't set up for tech chases as well as a regular hadoken because shaku sends the opponent up off the ground a little. In the clip of the day with Ikan's Ryu you see this very well where he first does shaku to send Mario to the platform, then does a hadoken to keep Mario in a lock state on that platform where he can't act until he's done flopping on the ground. Gives Ryu plenty of time to set up a reliable kill instead of just going unga-bunga and hope for the best.
As for Ken's shoryuken, you might want medium shoryu over strong because it's a DI mixup. I also think it's because some characters can fall out of Ken's strong shoryu (multi-hit moves in this game aren't the most consistent at times), so medium shoryu is a more reliable option. Ryu doesn't have this problem because his shoryu is a single hit but still massively strong.
I don't play either of these charcaters (I main Chrom and Doc lmao) so take this with a grain of salt.
theyre all good for pressure and conditioning.. send out a few weak hados that your opponent will easily get into the rhythm of shielding/parrying etc, then throw out a strong shakunetsu and go in for a combo is a fun thing I like to pull, then go back to slows and mediums.
