Is it Safe to Sail with a Baby? | S08E05

  • To be honest with you the idea of living and traveling on a sailboat with our newborn baby kind of scares me.
    All of the risks that we’ve accepted as part of our lifestyle are now being transferred to our baby girl.
    But even beyond the obvious dangers of sailing offshore and living off the grid, I also wonder how we’re going to deal with the simple challenges that all families face but in a much smaller space and without so many modern conveniences and sources of support.
    So here in Malta, a small island nation in the middle of the Mediterranean, we’re taking some time to get to know our little Isabella, to learn how to be parents on a boat, and to work on boat improvements that will make our life aboard easier and safer once we do start traveling again.

    220 charger fan blows air in; but no outlet in the charger compartment? Might be an idea to have a grill in the door. Thanks for great videos and good luck with baby sailing.

      @webheadusa9377 Před rokem +3

      I had the same thought. But, I thought I saw a hole on the wall opposite the charger in which a few wires were passing through. Depending upon where this hole leads, there may be enough size to discharge air. Look at 12:41 to see the hole I aim talking about. :¬) Webhead USA

      Was just going to make the same observation. Cooling is dependent on air flow. The larger the volume of air flowing over the unit the better the cooling. Right now your just pressuring a box and there is very little air flow, if any. The reason you felt air flowing in the test was because the compartment door, that the unit is in, was open. As soon as you close that door, without a grill, the air flow will stop.

    Hi wishing you guys well My wife is a physician and we are following your story and planning to make the move aboard this year. Praying and rooting for you guys. Also, wife keeps yelling get a powered baby swing so you can do stuff and the baby is happy. They are absolute sanity ... make it work on the boat you won't regret it.

    • @drjmedders7095
      @drjmedders7095 Před rokem +9

      The powered swing will take up lots of space, but it will absolutely be worth it--ABSOLUTELY! There are alternatives. A simple powered baby seat takes up no more room than an unpowered one. It will give Isa the movement that relaxes her. Sooner or later, when Isa goes from creeping to crawling to taking her first steps, and when a land-lubbing family would get a "walker," you might consider a "jumper" that hangs (generally from the header of a open doorway). A jumper takes up little space and can be taken down and st6wed quickly and easily. So, as a father and grandpa, I recommend a powered baby seat and a hanging jumper, two things that will help her self-soothe, will help her gain appropriate independence from being held all the time, and put her in charge of some of her own mobility.

    • @christip20
      @christip20 Před rokem +3

      Definitely! Especially the swing and the jumper. I think I saw one of the jumpers on Delos when Sierra was tiny.

    Jordan you should go back and look at some old "Ran Sailing" videos...they did the whole baby on a boat thing...their daughter Vera is about 5 now...they had the most incredible baby chair, with attachments in the cockpit, and at the table, with seat belts and secure enough for rough seas...good to see both of you doing so well. Really like your Dad, he is really cool

    • @jimmyjohnstone5878
      @jimmyjohnstone5878 Před rokem +8

      Agreed. Vera had a baby seat similar to a bike one, positioned on a bracket fixed in the cockpit such that it could hold her safely strapped in at times when both parents had to be doing boat handling, such as when going in and out of marinas, mooring, or doing sail hoisting. She could see what was going on, but couldn't fall anywhere or get injured by anything.

    Great job on the charger install, but have thought of a place for the heat to exit the compartment? Otherwise it'll likely build up heat inside just like before. Same with your new storage device. Love following you guys, great channel!

    Take your time and figure out what works for you. Delos manages without a nanny, but they often have guest crew onboard. Vagabond seems to have moved to full-time dedicated nanny. It definitely changes the dynamic especially in a small area, but they seem to enjoy the chance to do things as a couple again. We had a live-in nanny for a couple years and you do get used to it. The other thing could be a guest-nanny for passages, I volunteer :D

      Wondering if, with all this added electronics how much protection do you have for surges and lightening strikes?
      (if there even IS a way to protect from lightening)? OR....really good insurance? Can separate protection devices be put on each of the most expensive components? An extra cost I know but would be less than
      replacement (?). Always amazed at what projects you private sailing Captains are able to do. That’s a must for your survival I know! As a weekend day sailor I wouldn’t have a clue how to....🤷🏼‍♂️ and glad I don’t have to. Great job to the whole crew!

    • @jerodharbert8215
      @jerodharbert8215 Před rokem +1

      Efficient air flow can be tricky. You will feel some air flow, but to make it efficient, it looks like it needs at least 1 in spacer blocks behind the charger. Otherwise, both devices are in jeopardy. Ideally, put the fan on the charger side door blowing hot air out, pulling air thru the inlet door and a few holes around the charger. A filter on the inlet too, with foam around door edges to seal.

    • @Ferrolander
      @Ferrolander Před rokem

      Good comment. There needs to be air flow to protect the equipment and solving the intake side only addresses 1/2 of the problem. You will need an exhaust in the charger compartment that will create a flow and exhaust the hot air.

    May I give you a little bit of advice.
    Hard drives don't like to move.
    Engine vibration, smashing into waves etc can all cause physical damage to hard drives.
    I would suggest upgrading to all solid state drives as you can afford it.
    As for how fragile hard drives really are, one company was transporting a large number of drives from one building to another on a hand trolley over some paved ground.
    Multiple drives failed to work or had serious errors when they were installed in the new building.
    They are cheap with huge capacity compared to SSD's, just very fragile.

    The video quality and resolution on your channel is the best by far out of all the sailing channels I watch. It's obvious you've invested in some very nice cameras. On my Hisense u8g it really pops!

    Jordan, your dog is AMAZING. He is starting to be friend of your doughter. I think that he will teach all of us a big lesson of love. Keep going, new challenges are just around the corner for all of us. You and your wife are amazing. Life is not easy. My life is not. But both of you, sharing your life, makes my life easier. I can dream. Sorry about my terrible english. Thank you both.

    Hi Jordan, regarding the charger and the fan to cool it, you should reverse the flow of air to get out heat from inside the cabinet where the charger is. That is the way all cooling systems for desktops and laptops work. The way you put the fan, the cool air is going in but the charger will heat that air. You should open another hole in that cabinet to pull cool air. The fan should not be directly over the back of the charger. I could send you a diagram because it is dificult to explain with words only.

    A man's duty is to make a mess, it's that of our better half to remind us to clean it up. Great episode. Safety is first and foremost. The preparedness once shoving off can never be overstated. Sometimes it's difficult to see shortcomings in any project once finished. We all live, we all learn through those undertakings. Be safe folks, your viewing family keeps you in their prayers.

      I’m sure glad you said “remind” us to clean it up because I guarantee you at least my significant other would’ve been severely upset. If you had said, it was her job to clean it up.

    From one hole saw guy to another, no "collection" is complete until you get a hole saw within a hole saw bit; also sometimes called a co-pilot bit. It allows you to mount the hole saw of the existing size of the hole, inside the hole saw of the size you want to enlarge it to. It keeps you from having to make a backing jib when enlarging a hole and saves a ton of time. I recommend getting one for your collection!!!!

    Nice job on the installation. Do forget that you need somewhere for the heat to go. So you'll need to vent the enclosure so it can escape.

    Hi Jordan; just a precision: AIS shows you only the boats, ships,… which has been equipped with AIS B. AIS A (which is a receiver only) like your old one, doesn’t transmit, so you cannot see them. Same, a boat not equipped with AIS will be invisible. Do not rely only on AIS. An actual watch is vey important. Cheers and fair wind.

    Just a thought, you may want to provide a vent in the charger compartment door so the air you’re pumping into the charger compartment has somewhere to go … you can’t pump air into a dead space, there would be no flow. That being said, I admire your energy and drive on all your projects. Kudos! 🍸
