  • Looking for a golf ball for a good player? Or a golf ball for a slow swing?
    Golf balls really do impact your performance. And if you're playing a "Tour" golf ball, chances are you're losing out in the distance and spin department. We kinda knew you probably wouldn't believe us, so put together a test to prove our point.
    We put the Titleist Pro V1X golf ball up against the new TaylorMade Tour Response and TaylorMade Soft Response golf balls.
    We hit 10 shots with driver, 6 iron and wedge, taking out the bad hits, and took a look at ball speed, distance and spin.
    The results are pretty interesting.
    There are some major differences between these products regarding the covers of the ball and the compression.
    If you want to learn more about the technology we use to test and the accuracy of our numbers, take a look at this video: • Urban Golf Simulator T...
    It's important to note we take no advertising money from any golf brands (unlike most other media outlets). We are a self-sufficient indoor golf simulator venue in central London.
    Golf is an obsession for all of us that work here, and we're passionate about informing golfers on equipment and some of the myths that are popular in our game.

    New sub... played the Srixon Q Star Tour Divide (orange/yellow) for the first time today in CRAZY winds. I play Chromesoft x with a 102 compression that are now in the trash litterally. Q STAR TOUR with a compression of 67... LONGER, STOPPED PEFECTLY, STRAIGHTER, and SPIT on the wind. Seriously, WTF was that? New tech is real boys, and that low compression q star tour divide was so F-ing good. Never thought a low compression ball could do that. I got nothing but a bunch of Chromesoft X in the trashcan outside.

    Great review when I had my Taylormade fitting they chose the Tour response for me and said stay clear of TP5. I’m a senior and 15 handicapper and have always believed that tour balls are for the pros. I do think a three piece is better than a two piece especially around the greens.

    I bought a box of the tour response balls and played them today In NJ 40 degrees and I hit them very well! My driver is about 150-160 speed and I had some of my best drives today. Also I was able to stop a pitching wedge from 90 yards with 2-3 ft roll on solid greens

    Good stuff! I'm going to give the urethane Tour Response a try. First I've heard of them! I've been playing the Bridgestone BRX and the Titleist Trufeel. I'm currently an 7.9 handicap. James's numbers are quite close to mine. Hard to argue with that low driver spin and high wedge spin. But the real question is, "which ball do the dogs prefer?"

    The difference between recreational golfers and tour pros is the former see every shot as straight but the latter see shape in every shot. The difference.
    with “tour” balls is the coefficient of friction of the urethane cover layer which increases the ability to tilt the spin axis and shape shots. That’s a blessing and useful tool in the hands of a pro but the bane of the recreational golfer’s existence. 😂

    Lots of data around and sometimes players get hung up on spin.
    If you play a bump and run game around greens in chip with 7iron or hybrids or W and not use a lofted club then surlyn balls won't hurt your game.

      Yea the vast majority of average golfers use some type of B&R game around the greens and don't really give 2 shi**s about spin. The only thing that really matters to them is distance.
      Played with a guy numerous times that doesn't have a wedge or a wood in his bag. Just 3-PW. Chips with his 8 iron and is phenomenal at it. He shot in the 70's every time Ive played with him. He plays cheap Nitro balls.

    If you don't get the strike consistent, what ball you use is irrelevant. But since I'm hitting more greens now, and I'm ready for a new dozen balls, giving these a go.
    I play with budget clubs and medium swing speed, but never with a 'soft' ball. I've found srixon soft feel and thrown them back. So the titleist I have will be shelved for the next few weeks at least.

    I don’t know my swing speed but 7 iron is 140 yards. Had a ball fitting and fitted to pro v1, lost no noticeable difference to budget balls such as Srixon AD333, Callaway warbirds etc. But ball stops on greens. Not convinced distance should matter for ball choice, got to be about scoring.

    I liked your comment that at slower swing speeds it’s all about the cover. I’ve never heard anyone on You Tube say that before, but it is so true. I’ve recently used the new version of the Callaway Supersoft balls, 2 piece with the “Paraloid hybrid” cover (basically a fancy surlyn ionomer, not urethane) that fly far and run out good with the driver and fairway woods, but they don’t check up at all on approach shots. I have also (just for comparison) just recently tried a sleeve of Taylor Made Tour Response balls which are low compression 3 piece balls with a urethane cover. Yes, they are at a higher price point than the Supersofts, and they may give you a couple of fewer yards of driver distance, but (even for a 71 year old, now 18 handicapper) their performance and spin on approach shots and around the green are far superior to the Supersofts. They actually check up instead of running off the green. I’m switching to them. I’m pretty sure my handicap will go back down with the strokes saved in the short game. 🏌️‍♂️⛳️😎

    I play off +1 and play the Taylor Made RBZ soft. Dozen ball for about £15. Play a ball thats nice and soft, but also the balls I take on my practice ground are the same I play on the course with. Golfs about repetition, why practice with a topflite and play comps with a pro v1. I have 2 dozen RBZs and all my practice is with these. If I change to say a tour response, then again I will buy 2 Dozen and use these for practice/comps.

    Regular amateurs, especially guys with a slower swing speed definitely can't use a tour ball properly but the question always is whether the mid range balls are good enough around the greens compared with the tour balls. Once they reach that around the greens, amateurs should definitely avoid tour balls

    • @urbangolf
      @urbangolf  Před 2 lety +1

      it's all about the cover around the greens, and therefore if a ball has a decent urethane cover it will perform well

      @ponnappaganapathy9941 Před 2 lety

      @@urbangolf Are you saying that the cheaper mid range balls are as good around the greens as the tour balls. If so, there is absolutely no need to play a tour ball since most amateurs can't compress it enough. On the other hand, if performance around the greens is superior with the tour balls, it does matter. Very few amateurs hit greens in regulation and can manage one or two putts. Being nGIR, getting the ball lose for an up and down or at most a bogey makes a huge difference to their score

I tried and tried but eventualy dialed in another ball. Discussed this with a Titleist rep, I play their clubs. Couldn't get an answer other than the false marketing blurb. Unfortunately thats big US companies for you, market and money before consumer interests and honesty! Cynical but true I'm afraid.

    Tour players hit a variety of shots at a variety of swing speeds. You don't have to have Dustin Johnson's swing speed to benefit from a tour ball. Lower compression means lower spin. Lower spin means lower control for all players.

    • @urbangolf
      @urbangolf  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Jeff, thanks for the reply. Respectfully, we think you're missing the point. It’s more nuanced. Obviously there is optimal spin for all shots and too much is as bad as too little on all shots. Point of the video is to say a normal ball speed player gets more performance from a softer ball. They are only using the cover and not getting near the core with the harder balls.
