  • Here we look at how to plant potatoes on a UK allotment as most allotment holders grow potatoes.
Knowing how to grow potatoes from seed potatoes is an essential part of allotment or home gardening. It is essential to know how to plant potatoes if you have an allotment in the UK as we all grow them. Even the smallest veg patch can grow potatoes in a small trench or in a bucket or container.
We plant our potatoes on the allotment as we have plenty of room there. A UK allotment typically has enough room for potatoes. We are planting our Charlotte and Kestrel potatoes today. These are first early and second early potato varieties. They will both be ready to harvest at a similar time in the early summer. Early potatoes are typically small and getting them in now will give them time to shoot without risk of frost. We will earth up the rows especially if frost is forecast after they emerge above the ground.

Nice to see them done the trench way only thing I do different is I add grass clippings in the trench as that eliminates potato scab

I've been growing spuds for years, and it's always interesting to see how other gardeners grow theirs. There is so much to see on CZcams, and I'm still learning after all this time. A few years back, I started growing them in tubs to great success, and now this year, I'm planting all of them in 40 tubs. Six different varieties. My favourite main crop is 'Setanta' and 'Royal'. Your soil is amazingly stone free, but is it clay or loam?
It looks quite a dark brown colour compared to mine.

Great to hear that you as re growing so many varieties. That is a benefit of growing your own.
Our soil is clay but we produce our own compost to help break it up. It gets a little better each year.
      Have a great year!

So you just planted first earlies there so where do you put your second earliest and main crop, all new to this, I'm putting in first earliest in on Monday, (lady christl).
    My first attempt.
    Thank you for your advice.

I put them in between March and mid-April so if you’ve still got some to plant best get them in soon / I plant my early pots first, then second early pots and then main crop over a period of weeks / mine are all in now / good luck 🤞 am sure you’ll get a bumper crop / I’ve grown lady Christl in the past and they are very nice

I live in Scotland would like to grow potatoes, can I plant them now even though we get frosts still .?

We are in Kent so our timings will be different. Wait until frosts are less likely as when the shoots appear above ground a frost will kill them off. Mounding them up if a late frost is due could help.
