The original Hydra-Shock load was a 38 Special wadcutter type loaded to wadcutter velocity. They also sold the bullet for reloading and I have a few of them loaded around here someplace. We did not have the gel then. Yeah, I am that old. The first jacketed I remember was a 129 gr JHP in 38 Special. This load had a good rep on the street. When the 45 ACP load came out, it had a 100% one shot stop rating in gunfights for a long time. Then dropped down to 95%, this from a 5 inch barrel.
The 44 Magnum Hydra-Shok load is still being made. I think in might work OK in your gel test.
There is a couple of "Handgun Stopping Power" books out there where they kept track of shootings. As far as I know, no one has kept records like that for probably 25 years. There was a "Handgun Stopping Power" website but it is gone. Last I heard recently, the LEO, author now retired, was carrying a 9mm with the new 90 gr Super Vel ammo. He worked in Detroit. Maybe you should test that load.
