    Everything I've seen and the message you've pinned is an excuse, but hear me out. If any of you agree with him, then you're only shooting yourself in the foot.
    When you say "I'm loosing because x,y, and z. It's not my fault" then you'll never work on your weaknesses because you shifted the blame somewhere else and play the victim. But if you look at your loses and try to understand what you did wrong or right, then you focus on improving. What do you expect to happen if a "low to medium skill level player" goes against a veteran who has hundreds of hours? It's a matter of practice and game knowledge. So what if you lose, go practice on what you did wrong and do it right eventually.
    Here's what you can practice on:
    - Don't do raw h.brass knuckles, it's punishable and doesn't get you anything
    - Don't do raw double-snaps, they cost meter should only be used if needed during a combo
    - Stop pressing buttons when you're getting hit. You're going to be at a frame disadvantage and fall for burst baits, this is just asking to die
    - Don't do raw super. Your opponent did raw super because she was punishing yours. Your meter is gone and now you're dead
    You clearly have no sense of neutral, or what you should be doing. I'm saying that objectively, not to be mean or anything. And you know what? THAT'S FINE.
    Find people who can help you understand what to do, watch videos of high level play, look at skullheart for tips and information, fight people of different skill levels (join the skullgirls discord or enter in skullgirls_geat_gr8 and get to know people). Hardly anyone has a local skullgirls community, let alone a lively one.
    For anyone who's reading this, please stop making excuses. Fighting games are extremely difficult to be good at, and that's what makes them so satisfying to play. If you want to play them you're going to have to put time and effort into getting better.

      PleasureThatCutsWind the only correction I have is that there is barely any neutral game in skullgirls which is harder for new players to understand. The opponent is either in your face or your in theirs with minor exceptions for peacock but does it counts as neutral when you're getting hit on the other side of the screen? You should be using ur assist to get in anyways, one character is practically suicide unless ur enemy is bad.

    • @Korogunso8
      @Korogunso8 Před 7 lety +14

      Jackson Joestar it's understandable, in quick play people that aren't very good get destroyed and it's hard to learn anything. People don't want to seem as bad especially since this game has a small and very dedicated fan base that play at very high levels. It hurts a little for people to always be wiping the floor with ya and some of these excuses are valid but at the same time it isn't hard to get better.

Sure they can hit hard, but with Big Band his moves are pretty unsafe, and Beo has trouble just getting in on the opponent naturally, not to mention if he tosses his chair away he's stuck with out an invincible reversal, as well as he takes chip damage from normals. So opening him up after that is pretty easy.

    I was pretty trash at the time but the point of the video wasn't to show how amazing the other player was but was more to showcase how low to medium skill level players have next to no chance when it comes to training online through quickplay. This is especially bad when players have no one to train against locally as the cpu isn't very good. Even at the skill level I was at in this video I could perfect the cpu on any difficulty. this means that unless you know a high level player you basically have no chance of getting better as the players online would rather style on you than actually help you learn.

      yeah... but there are 5 years worth of guides to help you understand match ups and common setups for certain characters. Plus a majority of the community is willing to help new players learn... i just feel like many of the new/casual players don't go out of their way to find help, and when the go online wanting to win only to be disappointed they go kick their feet and tell the game off as "bad"

      @Ninja-The-Red-Shinobi Před 7 lety +3

      no... what i'm saying is that Casual players walk into an online match way before they even understand the game's mechanics. Even if you're a casual player it helps to know how the game plays like.
      It's because of them not understanding stuff in the game that they lose and from that they feel frustrated and leave the game.
      even in a casual setting, playing a fighter requires just an ever so little amount of practice and time sink into the game.

      Most people who I play games with dont give skullgirls a shot because they look at videos like this and say the game is broken and not balanced, even though it isnt. I get my shit wrecked every time I get on an online match, sure but I understand its my fault for not giving the game enough time, I understand that. But the fact still remains, new players get overwhelmed.
      I think this has more to do with how fighting games are hard by nature. Even if you understand mechanics, if you're getting read all the time you wont be able to do much, and thats just not fun. Imagine being paired with a Peacock player who just spams the fuck out of you in one of your first matches. I know all characters can deal with her but can you //really// blame new players for getting turned off by that match?
      idk it might be a bit better if you get paired with new players aswell, but there's not enough people playing it to do that. Sure you can do your research and lab a bit in training mode but if you're picking the game casually why bother? that doesnt excuse people who just whine and dont git gud, but still.

      I've played a lot of injustice, mortal kombat, SFV and smash. Is skullgirls just all about mixups and resets? Cuz to me I literally see no neutral lol.
      Also, do most ppl play on PC with like a joystick or something ? Srry I've seen u a lot in the comments and u sound like u no what's up. I just bought this game like a week ago, so I was just wondering.

    • @Ninja-The-Red-Shinobi
      @Ninja-The-Red-Shinobi Před 7 lety

      okay. so there is neutral in the game... but more along the lines of this very fast pace spacing akin to Guilty Gear. The high lvl play does heavily focus on Mixups Resets and Crossups, learning how to not only make teams work these in mind but also how to deal with such fast paced setups is key to winning.
      as for the player base, a majority of the players are on PC. [we have a Community Discord group were we teach new players as well as play eachother in lobbies] All tourneys like Combo Breaker will use the PS4 so having a controller or stick that works with that system is handy.
      Now if you just want to stick to playing on PC then any controller can work for you. SkullGirls can read almost any controller you plug into it. I've seen people play with a GameCube controller once it's kinda nuts.
      If you have more questions pls hit me up. been part of the community for 4 and a half years now, and i personally love helping out people when ever possible.

      Thanks so much for the info dude! SG always looked so unique, with the art style, well-designed characters, and the team gameplay littered with combos. I'm glad that this game isn't dead, and that it's still played at something like combo breaker (rip no EVO lol).
      I've never played a fighting game on PC (only used controllers tbh) so I was just wondering if it worked with a run of the mill fighting game joystick. It's a shame that even with interesting characters, titanic skill ceiling, and ect that this game isn't very popular, or will even see a second game in the near future. It also sucks that online for this game is fked since there's no mmr and it's basically high tier players vs noobs. I'll just stick to casual, but thank you again for the info and discord bro! 👍

      Evo screwed over SG back in 2014 when we were to have a spot only to be pushed out because of injustice. Ever since then we found Combo Breaker and they've treated all games there with major respect. So we decided to make that our EVO. [there is actually a SkullGirls Tour going on with Combo Breaker being the final Tourney meant to be all casual fun with prizes helping out players go to tourneys and such.]
      and yeah i understand how online quick play is, it's why many players talk to each other and set up private lobbies to play.

      Blazblue literally teaches you the basic combos and how to do them, though it isn't nearly enough to clear them and immediately become super good, you can learn a LOT from these, you really shouldn't ask the game for much more when the game is literally saying, hey, press these buttons to do some combos, here are some good stuff the game devs specifically put in and you can use them, and they are decent.

I have 2 people who play Skullgirls in my friend group and while they gave me some pointers, I had to figure out how to play the game by myself for the most part. Fighting games are designed so most of the work will be self taught through your efforts but only through the intrinsic need to get better. Most people do not have that need, which is why skill based matchmaking is a great idea for a game like this. The fact that you have to go to a completely different application that has nothing to do with Skullgirls, just to get skill based matches, especially for newbies, is bad.

      That said yes Skullgirls not having a skill based leader board is not great, however the community has managed to work around that by using the forums and discord to help players improve and to not get discouraged if they go thru a losing streak. This in turn has made the community much more tight knit, so much so that we have had players stick with this game for more than 5 years, myself included. It really shows how strong the SG Community is if the game can continue going strong well after other AAA Fighters have died down.
      I'm very proud of you playing Skullgirls your own way and learning and improving without the need of looking to players like Sonic Fox or Dekillsage. But never forget that these people are always willing to help you out if you ask them, even if it's just for a ft10 or something.

    This. Very much. I'm pretty new to Skullgirls and fighting games in general (Except Smash Bros.) I try to learn online and work on my combos and inputs on training mode, but the quickplay is so brutal for me that, one singular match aside, my opponent crushed me into the ground. Apparently the matchmaking is based on TruSkill, but so far I haven't noticed better matchups.

I wanted to go into Quickplay but there's not many people in my region, so I tried in all regions. Got matched with a Valentine solo, and I was able to beat her, but the game was extreeeeeemely laggy. Tried searching more in my region only, didn't find anyone.

    When choosing Fukua as your partner, you should give her clone assists. Forever a Clone does everything you'd want from a click happy move and synergizes with Big Band's moves. The drill is really useful but it needs to have a follow-up, or she just get punished AKA both your fighters get punished.
    Big Band is very technical, but he has a very fat hitbox and is easy to stagger from any angle. Take that as advantage to know that people are going to rush you.

    Most players in online games are like this sadly. The more niche the game, the more often you'll see players like this. Fighting game community in general is cancer. I don't blame anyone for not playing fighting games or competitive games in general online at all. Basically, you have to be high level or pro status right when when you start playing to even have a chance. In other words, stay with the pack or get left behind. Also, doesn't help that esports has this hold on fighting games being "serious business" that if you don't play at that level, don't bother playing it at all. Leave competitive games to the pros only bullshit. Get tired of it.
    Also, not a fan of 1 frame resets which Skullgirls has a shit ton of.

    • @Ninja-The-Red-Shinobi
      @Ninja-The-Red-Shinobi Před 7 lety +5

      i just like to state that the SkullGirls community is actually very welcoming to new players and are willing to help them improve. Heck we have beginner tourneys every week, we try to go out of our way to be nice to new players. However if you do go out into QuickMatch then yes, you have to expect you will come across a player who is really good and will not pull punches with you. [besides losing in SG doesn't affect anything, there is no score system like what Street Fighter has.]
      as for the 1 frame resets that's actually not possible due to the game's mechanics it's more like 4-5 frames. I understand you're going to say "That's still BS" and maybe it is, but what would you rather want? Unblockables or just Hard to blockables which also can be countered by Invincible DPs or a well timed Super reversal?

      I dropped this game years ago so at this point nothing could bring me back. The fact the game is 80% built on Marvel VS series is a big turn off for me as that is my most hated fighting game next to SF. but.... when did Mike ever say that? In all of my years following SkullGirls, i have never heard Mike say that SkullGirls is perfect. Heck Mike would be the first to admit that there is stuff wrong with SG and that if he had time/money he would go and fix stuff like the lobbies and characters. But here's the thing, Mike Z is proud of the many many years he poured himself into working on not just the game, but the engine as well. And he is going to show off that pride just a little. I mean... wouldn't you? After spending 20 years of your life making a fighting game engine and helping with making an incredibly successful indie video game in a niche market?

    There's a reason I call Skullgirls a movie when I play online: because just like a movie nothing I do has any bearing on the outcome of the match.
    Seriously the only way to play and learn skullgirls is to hunt out beginner's groups. Just like MvC3 this game is only fun when everybody's the same skill level, you'll learn nothing from playing against better players.
    Also "Resets" don't mean you have a chance to escape, they just reset IPS and combo scaling without letting out long enough to block. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

    • @Ninja-The-Red-Shinobi
      @Ninja-The-Red-Shinobi Před 7 lety

      Actually resets are chances to escape. You have to read the situation and find the best option on escaping. All resets give you plenty of time to block as well. Yes the opponent will more than likely throw an assist at you while trying to go for a high low mix up. how ever they have to be careful due to SG's all block feature which gets rid of unblockables. Heck in some situations blocking isn't really even needed, you can do an invincible reversal to blow up the opponent or a delayed alpha counter [or if you're a solo you can do a pushblock guard cancel into reversal]
      and yes you're right Resetting does reset IPS and Damage Scaling. But what it doesn't reset is Undizzy, that takes a second to start to tick down. So if you don't press any buttons [getting counter hit will lower undizzy allowing the opponent to get more in] then the opponent is limited to only 2 chains and very little damage. and if they trigger undizzy then you can burst out and reset everything back to neutral.
      So yes... there is stuff you can do when you're in a reset heavy situation and they all don't involve blocking.
      as for the hunting for beginners group. it's pretty simple. There are a couple groups/tourneys shown off in SkullHeart Forums. "SkullGirls Get Gr8" is a weekly beginner tourney on Wednesdays at 7pm EST. As for hands training the community discord has players willing to teach newbies.

      I would say "git gut" but thats not a way to go. Check steam forums to find some people that are in the same situation as You, play with them and have fun discovering mechanics of the game. Also it's good to find some higher skilled players to learn from them and to check skullheart page for combos.
      I was a person who also blamed "premade combos with random resets and no brains" but with time You will understand more and more about the game. Also "long combos with unexpected resets" are bane for every new player, just don't let it go to You and observe to learn.Later on You will find that people who are using those kind of tactics have really bad neutral game and You can exploit it if You learn how to play. (neutral game is a state when nobody is on offensive, it's more about reflexes and reading the opponents moves/habits)
      EDIT: but video is actually accurate. At least medium skilled people play on Quickplay;).

    Oh boy, online play would be much better if it had more players. 90% of the players still online pretty much know the game inside out.
    Nevertheless, it's a jarring experience to go from bots to real players. Like myself, I learnt to subconsciously bait and trick the AI with same routine, but skimped on learning the actual big combos and their variations.
    Now, this means my online matches, I might catch a vet offguard with a little bizarre engages, but the very moment they recover and get a hit confirm on me... the game is lost for me.
    Still fun though, maybe it's the rookie's unexpectness, but I've gotten close to winning a game every now and then.
    And in the end of the day, I can only blame myself of the shortcomings and losses. It's just that playing against bots (or staying in training) just gets so goddamn boring after awhile and therefore, I don't get enough hours to employ all the tools you need to win an online match in skullgirs.

A lot of times it's a lot safer to simply not burst, let them get hard knockdown with terrible scaling on the combo, and then block the mixup to start your offense.

      @TheProgenitor Před 7 lety

      That is completely untrue. Skullgirls was my very first fighting game, and I had nobody to play with. I could only do quick play. But I was able to grind it out, learn combos, learn from my failures and research how to correct them when something kept tripping me up. After a few months I had reached a level where I was at a respectable win rate.
      Just because you might lose a match doesn't mean you can't improve from it. As I just stated, one of the player's main mistakes was that he kept mashing burst, even though a lot of the times it's better to simply eat the combo and block the oki since a good player will have built the combo to be purposely burst safe right when they are able to burst. A lot of times this screws up the combo unless your opponent takes the bait and bursts, which in tern ruins your opponent's chance of converting into a knockdown and giving you a big window of retaliation, or at least resetting to neutral.
      Now OP takes the constructive criticism and knows now not to burst right away unless you know what they are doing is not burst safe, and can try to put that into play. I did the same thing, but I did so the long and hard way; trial and error. I'm a very stubborn person. I like playing the same person over and over again to try and figure them out. I add them on steam and they give me feedback. Most of the community is extremely helpful if you just reach out to them.
