  • EBM/Industrial was a very important form of music that sat underneath a lot of other styles through the 80s and even the 90s. It is sadly largely ignored or forgotten but without the intense charge of EBM many of the things we take for granted now would not be here or as they are. A great lesson we can learn from EBM is how to deliver a powerful punch with a minimum of material. So long as the idea is powerful and the delivery is too, you can do a lot with not very much. This is something that many EDM & Metal people have totally forgotten. Listen without prejudice to the early material and see how emotionally deep, mysterious, alluring, and powerful it sounds, even if the mix seems "less".

    This is what I love. I have been listening to this type of music for a little more than 30 years. I have always had a dream to make some myself. Six months ago I started to learn Reason and two weeks ago I bought your sound pack just because it says EBM on it. When I listen to my favourite music it sounds so simple to make. But I just couldn't identify what was going on in the tunes. I struggled a lot, fiddled around but it did not sound like the style I was looking for. The result is sometimes ok, but not EBM, it always turned to something else. Then I bumped in to this instruction video and you are breaking it down wondefully. Now I know the form and the common sounds and how to combine them.
    Thank you so much. I can't be thankful enough.

      One of the great things about early EBM was that it was able to be many things. Single Gun Theory & Skinny Puppy had records on the same label but were quite different. Let your own sound come through. I have another recent vid on that. 😎

    I love how EBM fans can just have direct opposite opinions of each others preferred flavor of it. Genuinely. For such a simple genre it’s so varied everyone has their own micro preference, and that’s great.
    For example, growing up in America, I was far more involved in the wax trax style stuff, noisy, aggressive. Revolting Cocks being one of my all time faves. It’s literally Ministry and Front 242 together! So it’s wild for me to hear someone call anything EBM related “elegant”.
    But I love it. CZcams is seriously lacking real ebm content like this, and I’d love if you’d do more!
    (Can’t believe you called KMFDM American though. 😂)

    • @BenedictRoffMarsh
      @BenedictRoffMarsh  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks. I appreciate that. Yes, I agree that overall EBM is sadly sidelined. Or worse misnamed as Retrowave, Darkwave, Countrywave, or whatever silly name Tredmp made up this week to appropriate what it can't do itself (ooh).
      I always assume KMFDM are American. To me, they always felt more of the American sound than the European. I had something of theirs and would listen to it, but more to try to work out why I couldn't really dig it compared to the more "elegant" stuff.
      In a bit of madness 15 years ago, I sold off a lot of my music, and with that went most of my EBM which I can't get back. An early Neon Judgement compilation, Nitzer Ebb, Hilt, Skinny Puppy, Severed Heads, In Sotto Voce, (and that KMFDM)... Even a few Goth & Metal things like Xmal Deutschland "Tocsin" & King Diamond "The Eye". Never sell music (even if you trade it for Enya).

      I saw it right at the start of Techno. The rubber children would misuse every possible word they could pronounce (and many they couldn't) to re-engineer the "world that was" into a "world that centered on Techno". It is not a healthy sign ;-) Doing this has made all forms of music less but they are so determined that anything they can't understand must cease to exist. I tried to keep side stepping so when they re-purposed a genre tag, I would move again as I would rather be clear that I am not EDM than be considered a failed version of EDM. Good people understand.

    Great telling of the history of oldschool EBM. Too bad about the audio but good stuff regardless. I tend to gravitate to a lot of stuff from the early and mid 80s like a;GRUMH, a split second and so on and you mentioned a few I haven't delved too deep into (like Sigue Sigue Sputnik).
    There's also a lot of VERY interesting and unique modern EBM sounds that I would recommend that take the oldschool school of thought and modernize it. A few I'd highly recommend would be //TENSE//, Multiple Man, High Functioning Flesh and Comfort Cure among many more. There's so many great new sounds coming out that isn't just 1/16 note basslines and yelling. EBM is making a comeback in a good way.

    • @BenedictRoffMarsh
      @BenedictRoffMarsh  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Vvv. Sputnik wasn't actually EBM but a kind of mutant Electro Rockabilly, but informed by a lot of the things learned from EBM. These names are new to me. Exploring: //TENSE// is very typical of the old-school EBM. Kinda like Goth only more relentlessly binary. Multiple Man it appears was from my city (Brisbane Oz) and whilst I was still there too. Wasn't aware of them but I got so outside of any scene ages away. High Functioning Flesh reminds me of Nitzer Ebb. Comfort Cure certainly seems like my kind of simple but relentless.
      Definitely, it seems that there is a lot happening within this space that I was not aware of. Thanks

      @@BenedictRoffMarsh Absolutely! I'm always happy to recommend new acts in EBM that are actually doing something interesting. It seems there's been a big surge of oldschool influenced bands since around early 2010s and onwards and I keep hearing more and more that are playing with those sounds and pushing it forward. A lot of credit can be give to //tense// for that as they're the first band I am aware of that started utilizing the analog gear and formats found in old EBM with a fresh outlook (not trying to recreate Nitzer Ebb for the umpteenth time). Fascinating that Multiple Man is from your city!
      A few more notable ones I think you'd really enjoy are PC World's newest album Order, Physical Wash's Physical Death, Total Chroma's Body Relics and Mother Juno's Intert.
      Enjoy!
