My mom & my wife, both very intelligent & educated ladies, watches these soaps daily, I used to make fun of them, they would make fun of these serials too, but still would sit together & watch daily. I understood, these are just some guilty pleasures for them, so I just let them be, also 2 hours of quietness, without any friction between them, is more than worth it!

I've worked as an Asst director on a few of these shows, it was hilarious. The directors, actors simply don't give a Sh*t about the scenes, they just show up on set that morning, even the director needs to be told what scenes are going to be shot that day.
It's basically the writers and creatives who are hired by the channel itself who call the shots and come up with these crazy ideas.
I remember this one Pilot I was working on, so there was a famous TV actor who was then in his late 30s was called in to shoot a scene where he was supposed to play the dead father of the lead, it was a flashback scene.
Then next thing you know something went down, and suddenly they made him the lead of the show, (lead was supposed to be a college student age) just like that, on the same day they changed the entire casting.

These are just “time pass” for aunties. They don’t give an F about the cinematography at all. They are just having a refreshment watching these mostly after the household works. Doesn’t matter what the content is (they watch it the first time, repeat and rerepeat too). There’s a storyline which is kept lengthy fictionally and created with a sense suspense (to what will happen) at the end of every episode keeps the watching exciting for them. They only follow the plot and how story is moving forward. The content is simply irrelevant.
P.S: That actually comes from the way of storytelling in Indian(somewhat Asian overall too) Cultures in general. The contents are merely a media to keep the story moving, irrelevant to how over the top or hyperbolic the way of presentation could be. Even stories having been told orally over centuries reflect the same concept. The content is only to keep the main storyline exciting and dopamine friendly. It doesn’t hold any major value unlike in the storytelling as in the West. Just listen to some old person narrating a real life incident from their times and you’ll understand it.

Actually many serials starts with a good message and are actually good in the beginning but instead of ending them in the right time due to trp, they keep on extending them and totally move away from the real reason the serial was made. One example is Udaan, it was so good at the beginning when the main character was a little child but after she grew up, it changed and become like any other soap opera.

As I grew up it made me realise how important theese serials are to all the homemakers out there and even to service men and women who return home tired and want to eat their dinner peacefully with something on television that doesn't further eat their brain after the long tiring day. Also The timing is kept in such a way. There is expensive bid for prime time slots.

In my opinion and I have watched some of these soaps with exasperation with my family, the reason they are popular and so nonsensical is that the ladies of our house enjoy household and romantic drama. Their focus is entirely on the romantic and drama aspects of these serials. For them these absurdities and defiance of laws of physics are secondary. For them these absurdities are byproduct of the real subject which is the epic love story that they wish they have or the unfolding of household drama they wish they could enact in real life. NOT UNLIKE the action movies we males enjoy. We are willing to overlook any absurdity in laws of physics or reasoning unless it is being delivered with an awesome action sequences. Also since these serials are low budget and produced constantly all year round, it diminishes their ability to make passable content. The viewers are willing to sacrifice quality over their daily dose of drama.

I want to share my experience. My family watches a serial called C.I.D where agents solve cases. It was one of the longest running serials in India. I myself only watched two three episodes only but I was aware of its long unending history. At that time I was looking for 'if the death of any major character in an Indian serial is possible (reasonably). And then it happened, in some episode of C.I.D whose number I don't know, one of the agents named Abhijit (see, I even remembered the name of the dude) falls into a river and further falls through THREE big... big... big waterfalls and gets washed away. I thought 'yes, he is done for sure now.' But vola, there he was after some time, fit as any sucker. That is it, that's when I knew... unless some higher power wants no higher power can kill a character in any Indian seriaal.

What I heard about serials is that, when directors shoot something, it's only 3 minutes reel which can be made everyday. Post production team's task is to extend that feed upto 23 minutes. It's so hard.

Tv serials are watched by many many men also. But the thing is most men are working outside so they can't follow these properly. Hence less engagement... I used to watch all tv shows as a child, early 2000, they were bad. Proper saas bahu shows. (Still I would say they were better than what we have today ) I think I stopped around 8th standard.

Hi Jaby, so I understand when you said that do the aunties find any entertainment in it? Yes they do the thing is that in india many tv shows or movies are made for people who just wants to watch something funny when they come home from a long and tiring day at work; those are the middle class people. So when they come home and if they see something like these shows it gives them some sort of entertainment and a good laugh. Especially for those people who work every single day for long hours and housewives as well. After a long tiring day this is their dose of happiness. They don’t want to get into the physics and logic. Hope it cleared your doubts.

I usually watch indian serials for like upto 50 episodes or maybe 100 max because after that story starts getting boring. The only serial I have watched completely is 'Ek Haseena thi' the casting was great in that serial. Well it entertains the housewives and makes them happy, so, I don't mind scripts getting weird and stretched out.
