  • NOTE: I am demonstrating this right handed yet I am left handed so it appears that I am cross eye dominate.
    This video is one of the tools we use in our Handgun Fundamentals class. During this class we are able to take any shooter regardless of you shot group and decrease it by 50% or more in one hour. We have a 100% success rate for doing so.
    The hardest thing about becoming a precision shooter is learning. No one wants to really hit the books and learn. We would rather go out and just shoot.
    I have used this chart for over 10 years to help prove to students that they can successfully become a better shooter in a short period of time.

    I am new to pistol shooting and this explains a lot. I could tell as soon as the round went off if it was going to be a good shot. But did not know exactly what was wrong when it wasn't. I think I have actually missed in every possible way lol. The best results I had were when I slowed down. Thanks for explaining each issue, this is going to help a lot.

    Excellent video, thanks for going all the way through the chart. This chart helped me back when I started shooting 1911's. I was heeling and the chart helped me resolve that issue. I am using it to teach a new shooter. I am going to have her add the "squeeze, squeeze" as well

    Thank you for this video. I never knew that I was cross eye dominant and I had never heard of it but it's been my problem since I started shooting handguns. It make sense in hindsight.
    Thanks

      You are welcome. These are simple issues but we tend to not want to fix them because we want things right now. Take the time and correct it by reading 10 minutes a night with the correct eye covering the currently dominant eye up with something. Discipline to do this is what will separate you from the rest.

    I am a somewhat experienced shooter but haven't shot in a few months. Today I was shooting at about 9:00 - 10:00 consistently regardless of pistol. After seeing your video, I hope that putting more finger on the trigger and by squeeze, squeeze, squeeze I will shoot better next time out. Subscribed and looking forward to seeing your other videos. Thanks!

    Awesome! I actually used the Correction chart today and was trying to figure out how to correct the 9oclock issue. I was doing exactly the opposite of what you were saying. Cant wait to get back on the range and apply some of your suggestions.

      Zdenko sorry for the late reply. Keep practicing. 90% training, 10% operation. If you want to be the best be disciplined to do these simple drills and learn everything from ground up. Mastering the basics is key.

    I am demonstrating this as right handed.
    Refer to a RIGHT handed or LEfT handed chart depending on which is your strong hand.
    The chart itself remains the same only the errors will change to 180 deg

    very nice I suffer from the 1 to 3 o clock position. I will adapt this to my laser training and range time

    • @UnitedDefenseTactical
      @UnitedDefenseTactical  Před 7 lety

      If you are referring to laser training that is on your gun it isn't a good platform to use when precision training due to shaking. Use your gun and watch how little your sights appear to move. Then use a laser and watch the target. The laser can and will hinder this. Lasers are great but not designed for pin point precision shooting. Laser training such as laser aids for time and such are great.

    I am right handed, but left eye dominant. I would always hit left of center and thought that was the problem. This was wit hGen 3 Glock handguns (Glock 17, 22, 23 and 27). Then I started trying other weapons. I started hitting center right off the start with the M&P, FNS, FNS Compact, Sig P229 and Walther PPQ platforms. So, I assume the grip of the Glocks just don't fit me. I have not tried the Gen 4 yet and not sure I will since I am really happy with the weapons I have now.

    • @UnitedDefenseTactical
      @UnitedDefenseTactical  Před 7 lety +1

      Glocks are longer front to back. I had to have mine reduced and re stippled to get my trigger finger placement right. Once that happened it was an entire new gun.

  • @wallybusch7252

    I shoot right-handed and I'm left eye dominant you said this is the one thing the chart won't correct for. My shots hit just left of center in pretty tight groupings. You are right I can't seem to fix it. Would you advise aiming slightly right of center?

    • @UnitedDefenseTactical
      @UnitedDefenseTactical  Před 7 lety +2

      Wally I apologize for the late response I did not get a notification.
      There are two reasons for eye dominance.
      1. Medically. One eye could be damaged due to stigmas or others conditions. This will force the opposite eye to take control. For a medical issue surgery or medical treatment is the only fix and if it cannot be fixed this way then you will learn to adjust but getting use to different distances.
      if you are 3" to the left at 10' then you should be 6" at 20'. (random number). From there you will learn to hold over. We have to accept we may have medical issues we cant correct.
      2. The muscle behind the eye is stronger. To fix this cover one eye at night with something and read 5-10 minutes. You can also wear safety glasses at the range with scotch tape over the current dominant eye. This will cause the needed eye to strengthen over time and become dominant. At some point you will notice your eyes are fighting for dominance. Not much longer from that you will have accomplished your goal. Depending on the dominance this varies in time. Just apply a few minutes per night because range time once every few weeks will not be effective.

    im a left handed shooter and purchased a 9mm shield, I have only shot around 500 rounds out of it and I am consistently shooting low/right. the grouping is ok but cant seem to figure why im shooting off. I have tried to correct everything I can think of. I have shot 9mm, 45, 38, and have never shot way off the way I shoot the shield. any suggestions?

    • @UnitedDefenseTactical
      @UnitedDefenseTactical  Před 7 lety

      Hey brother this happens for a couple reasons.
      1. Ensure that you are not opposite eye dominant. If so see this video.
      czcams.com/video/muNOgwGp75E/video.html
      2. Some triggers have a sticky spot which forces you to squeeze harder on the trigger and will cause your groupings to be off but consistent. If this is the case you can test this by trying another gun. If you correct the issue with the other gun the trigger needs to be cleaned, polished, or more break in time. Some guns just naturally have sticky points.
      3. When a shooter is jerking it will go to the 7 o'clock position as a right handed shooter. Usually their rounds will spread out similar to Orion's belt. Close to far and in between. This is due to the shooter not being use to a consistent squeeze so the jerk isn't the same. As a shooter becomes more comfortable you will see the rounds grouping better even though they may still be low and left. This could also mean that you are jerking the trigger the same every time.
      Try a different gun first. If you still are in the same area as with your gun then you are jerking the trigger consistent and need to learn to press the trigger more instead of jerking. If it corrects it then your gun has a sticky spot or you may just need to finesse it a little more on the squeeze.

    How do you correct cross dominance right handed , left eyed. My rounds go 9 oclock ... should I shoot with left eye closed? I now shoot both eyes open

  • @lyndonlivesay2692
    @lyndonlivesay2692 Před 7 lety

    I am shooting right handed but I am left-eye dominant. According to the very beginning of this video, I am left of center. I am trying to close my left-eye to force my right eye to focus. I am still shooting just left of center. As I see it, I have some options. 1) Move the sights to move the point of impact? 2) Keep both eyes open and move the gun to the front of my left eye and allow my left eye dominance to take over?

      I wouldn't move the sights rather train yourself to fix it or adjust because if you ever had to pick up another weapon you not knowing how to adjust will lead you into getting killed. Fix the problem not create a new one. I made a video below to show you how to do that.

    I am cross-eyed dominant with right hand and left eye. What is the best distance to drill these exercises? 9', 15', 21' or 30'?

    • @UnitedDefenseTactical
      @UnitedDefenseTactical  Před 7 lety

      The best I have noticed is 9'. The errors will still be there regardless of what distance. The further you go the greater the error distance from your intended target. This also allows the shooter to not be disappointed in their shooting. That alone can destroy a shooters learning curve. Always let them know that their placement is ok and they will improve. Confidence is key.

    Low and left, a way of life for me. My groupings are getting better --- not ideal, but is it combat effective? Surely. I'll take it as I'm a right handed, cross-eyed dominant shooter. I've corrected that, so I'm rather pleased with my progress over the years. Great video!
