    As a full on Gen X I can say blockbuster closing was the end of an era. We were around when VHS became a thing, it was our fri/Sat night's thru our teens into our 20s. So many memories of youth have VHS tapes squarely in the center. Going to blockbuster meant that you and your bestie were gonna have a great sleepover, your slumber party was gonna be with your friends and Freddie Krueger. Blockbuster/all vhs rentals helped the rise of the 80s horror movie thing, etc. So, when blockbuster died, we were in our 40s+, it signified the ending of our youth, and all the beautiful things that entails.❤
    As far as the blockbuster pallet? No.

    • @RealElongatedMuskrat
      @RealElongatedMuskrat Před 2 lety +15

      I just left a similar comment before I saw this one but yep I fully agree. A lot of folks associate it with childhood nostalgia, thinking of things you did with people who aren't here anymore, mixed with mourning an activity that just doesn't really exist anymore - with streaming services, we don't visit stores and rent physical videos now. It was a reasonably inexpensive activity that allowed more frequent visits than toy stores, for example, and there was a whole ritual around it as a child going with an older family member. The excitement of a new release finally coming out on video or DVD, looking through the discount sections for obscure weird movies. I think that's why it's sad - I personally think of trips to rent a video with my father or my grandparents when I see Blockbuster. They've all passed since, so Blockbuster was like a memory of them for me. I mean I didn't care about the makeup collab at all, but I get why people would be like "damn, end of an era" with blockbuster closing. Also VHS cases have a particular smell, from what I can remember. That plasticy scent might be comforting for someone who has a lot of fond memories of the place - like the way some people like the smell of lego or play dough or those scented gel pens that never smelt like the fruit they claimed to be.

    • @Una...
      @Una... Před 2 lety +8

      @@RealElongatedMuskrat Yes! Omg I forgot about the hours of my youth spent searching every discount bin for obscure movies! Thank you for reminding me! It was a jackpot when you would find something so random that you and your friends had heard of but never seen, I personally recall a movie called 'Liquid Sky'! Or renting a tape that was just videos, and if you were lucky, actual interviews or unedited versions of a favourite song/video! I watched countless hours of Duran Duran on vhs lol. And the smell, oh yes! Like an old book, or that weird plastic sweet smell of your favourite childhood doll. The hours I would spend with my best friend watching horror movies, Nightmare on elm street, Fright night, etc. Such good times.

      @@Una... your reply made me smile so much, so many memories! There are so many weird movies from the discount section that seem like a fever dream to me now, if my sister hadn't watched them with me I would be doubting whether or not they were real now 😂 we can never remember the titles but sometimes we'll still say to each other, "remember that movie we watched with ___ in it and ___ happened? Was that in the same movie or different ones? Was it real at all?" 😂 The tapes of random videos together were always great too, yes! Because it could be all sorts of random nonsense. Good times.

      i remember when blockbuster came into town and drove the small video rental shop out of business in the early 90s. whoever ran that little shop was cool af. my mother worked there when she was finishing college, i was little and they let her bring me to her shifts and they'd even had a little play area for kids. but of course i would toddle off to the horror section and the delightful inflatable chainsaws and hockey masks on the ceiling. great memories. rip video wizard

    • @Una...
      @Una... Před 2 lety +5

      @@erinniccoinn1gh yeah, big box companies can suck like that. I think my nostalgia is for the vhs/vcr and the part they played in my childhood in general. We had a place like that too! I think he called it Hollywood Rentals cuz he was a movie buff/collector. His shop was like a museum. He had props from all kinds of movies. Some were behind glass, or hanging from the ceiling. He also had the largest horror collection I've ever seen! Tons of really obscure, hard to find movies too. Really neat guy/shop. He passed away year or two ago. I don't know if its still open, sadly.

    The nostalgia of Blockbuster isn't confusing or lost to me. I lived in a rural area growing up so going into town to Blockbuster with my dad was always a treat. Being able to pick out my own candy, soda, the microwaveable popcorn in the tub, and a new movie or 2 meant my weekend was going to be awesome. I can see the hype in the Blockbuster palette but I didn't pick it up simply because I already have a large makeup collection.

    The blockbuster thing is just nostalgia and teh end of an Era. People used to make a night out if watching a movie and seeing them and picking snacks with your friends and family, checking out their merch and games, TVs playing trailers and game set ups to try games.
