  • This video is about how to screw your 3D printed molds together instead of clamping them or having them snap together. I make a silicone tapered gasket with the 3D printed screw together mold.

    I've also made some silicone molds directly on the 3D printer. Some of the things I do, put through holes on the mold blocks, so I can use all-thread, nuts, and washers to clamp down the mold halves, fourths etc. Next, I have a bunch of super sculpey clay, and I find the pink clay rolled into a thin bead, line it across the inside seams of the molds, clamp down, then come in with a finger, paper towel, clay sculpting tool, whatever to scrap out the excess clay. Obviously some sand paper, solvents, and finishes all will improve quality depending on what standards you are looking for, but not always required.

    I've been working on silicone gasket moulds all week and now I feel like Eric can read minds... XD
    Great vid by the way, really useful for my project. Thanks!

    Your like an old version of me. I’m a Machinist from the Chicago area, I use inventor at home and solid works at my day job. I’m here investigating possibly making a custom o ring.

      Some of the older videos did not translate well when uploaded to CZcams, music is a bit much on some of them, I wish that this was an editable thing, unfortunately it is not at this time

    Eric, first of all, I'm very impressed by your Fusion skills. I do have to say that it seemed like your 3d printer was letting you down a little. I'm currently using a Prusa MK3 and the magnetic heated flexing bed has been great for prints like the one you did. Nowadays, I print PLA, ABS and lots of PETG and I just don't have the artifacts or need to apply any solvents/glue stick for bed adhesion. I'm certainly not a 3D printing expert but moving on from the borosilicate print bed has been great. You have a process that works well for you but it might be worth a test drive to see if it helps your workflow.

    Quick question... Why no register the gasket as to always place it properly on the gasket holder?

    Since the gasket is thicker on one side that the other, I assume the orientation is important. Did you consider adding something to the mold to help orient it, like a tab or notch? If you had to make another one, would you add something to the exterior of the mold to make it easier to unscrew them?

    I printed some silicone part molds earlier this year and was genuinely surprised it worked as well as it did. Apparently there can be some barriers to curing silicone around 3d printed parts but i haven't had issues yet.

      i think thats mainly sla resins and then you should use tin cure silicones instead of platinum cure (platinum will have serious inhibition issiues)

    how critical is the vacuum chamber? and is that a DIYable project? looks like a well-sealed bucket and a pump? And how critical is the heat-curing or is that *only* to make it faster? great videos, thanks!

    • @EricStrebel
      @EricStrebel  Před rokem +1

      Neither are critical they just give you better results

    Very neat - I am sad that I have no need for any silicone parts, it looks very satisfying to make those :-)

    maybe 3d print grip tabs to grab and make it easy to open?

    if you are about to make many of these you better redesign the bottom part to make it easier to open by hand
