  • Powering development in the 21st century was the topic of a debate that aired on BBC World News television channel and also on BBC World Service radio on 16 and 17 July.
Filmed during the Vienna Energy Forum at the Hofburg Palace in June 2011, the debate features Srikumar Banerjee, Secretary of Department of Atomic Energy, India; Elizabeth Dipuo Peters, Minister of Energy, South Africa; Peter Droege, President of Eurosolar, Germany; and Kandeh K. Yumkella, Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The debate is moderated by BBC World News presenter Zeinab Badawi.
The UN General Assembly named 2012 as the International Year for Sustainable Energy for All. The UN Foundation has launched a website for the Year: www.SEFA2012.org
The 2011 Vienna Energy Forum, organized by UNIDO, the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), brought together more than 1,200 participants from 125 countries including heads of state, policy-makers, experts, civil society and the private sector. A total of 99 key speakers from 45 different countries facilitated the discussion on how to overcome energy poverty and how to move from declarations of intention to tangible action on the ground.
Participants at the Vienna Energy Forum called for bold steps and strategic public-private partnerships to guarantee universal energy access by 2030, including by expanding the use of renewable energy sources.
The World Debate is a monthly programme on the BBC World News channel which aims to convene panels that engage in a robust exchange of views.

I simply hated it when the host interrupted and kept constantly misinterpreting and turning others' opinions into ridiculous conclusions. Like " Between my family and work, I think work is my current priority" "I see, so you think you shouldn't care about your wife and child at all"
I can't believe this is happening on a BBC program.

She is a BBC journalist who had been around for about 30 years. Her style was good then, but I see here she's got too big for her boots..behaving like an international guru, when she's only the BBC representative of Africa. And , the rude, annoying, interrupting, bullying, way of conducting this debate is typical of how the BBC are nowadays..and she's become very much like That...only my opinion.,

I enjoyed the debate. The world we live in is overrun by thecnology and this technology depends on a powerful energy. For us to get that energy we need to have nuclear industries. The nuclear industries have two side. Zone side which is positive and the other one negative. But what I noticed from the video none of the debaters emphasize the negative side of the nuclear power.

Energy production & distribution is of vital importance to the world, our future, our environment & as a possible way to overcome global income disparity. I only heard way too brief a mention of the global climate change crisis & how energy production affects it. There was also no mention of the insurmountable problem of nuclear waste disposal. We need funding on a parity for renewables to supply future energy needs. Nuclear power is NOT the answer for energy equity, safety or production.

First off. Fusion. Secondly, it seems the problem with nuclear is people. not nuclear. if i may paraphrase a very wise man, the problem with the reactors is making sure the tank is full of water to cool the reactor. In fukashimas case, I feel like it was a large wave that destroyed the fukashima plant? so in the rare occasion of too much water? in either case, Fusion. also, there are plenty of sources that can also help, including things like geothermal solar wind etc. Lastly, GERMANY YOUR AMAZING FOR GETTING OFF NUCLEAR! AND LEADING THE WAY IN MANY OTHER REGUARDS. THANK YOU.

Energy is very important for development of a society. We need to develop all forms of energy in order to satisfy demand. The problem with nuclear energy is that there are serious risks. But all forms of energy have risks. We need to continue developing nuclear energy to make it safer and by making nuclear energy safer we make cheaper or easier to access. As far as nuclear energy being a weapon, yes this is a risk. But we have countries with nuclear weapons now. They are industrially developed countries and have intercontinental missiles, nuclear submarines, and stealth bombers to engage in first strikes. Now that is really dangerous. Pre-industrialized countries in Asia, Africa, Middle East do not have the ability to build nuclear power plants, intercontinental missiles, nuclear submarines, or stealth bombers. So what is the problem about proliferation? If the developed, industrialized countries of Europe (including Russia) and North America do not engage in thermo-nuclear war then it cannot happen. As far as Mr. Pieter Droege (President of Eurosolar) who is very knowledgable but he is also deceptive. Yes, solar radiation (sunglight) is free. But Mr. Droege's solar panels and power-storage batteries are not. You have to buy the solar panels and batteries from Mr. Droege's privately-owned for-profit companies. Plus solar panels do not generate enough power to meet electric power demand. When the sun goes down you must have the storage batteries to store electrical power. The rare earth elements and special metals needed to make solar panels and storage batteries must be mined. This mining process is extremely harmful to the environment. Currently we simply cannot access the elements in sufficient quantity from deep under the earth's surface to make the solar panels and batteries. Germany is famous for its strip mining industrial process to access coal. Germany is highly dependent on coal-fire electrical power plant. Germany also uses nuclear power to generate electricity, so Mr. Droege is being deceptive like English Brexiteers' Leave EU campaign. Fukushima is an easy target, because of its sensationalistic news value. Japan is at high-risk for severe earthquakes, so its geology is not ideal for nuclear power generation. But for geologically stable countries nuclear energy should be developed and made safer which in turn will be cheaper. Then there is the gentleman who was the president of Nigeria. There are many third-world countries like United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Brunei, Kingdom of Saudia Arabia, ... who have fossil fuel as a natural resource and the kings or emirs (which another form of absolute power ruler) seem to have created a comfortable social-welfare state for its people. Why is that Nigeria cannot? Isn't Nigeria a democracy and has oil as a natural resource? Why can't Nigeria gets its act together and give its people a decent life like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or United Arab Emirates or the Islamic Republic of Iran? Nigerians have a modern democracy. Do they not? The former president of Nigeria claim they are oppressed by wealthy, multi-national corporations? This is the same old Marxist propaganda. Why are the Saudi Arabians or Iranians able to give their people a decent life. Is it Nigerian government or Nigerian Oligarchs causing the the inequities? Why do the developed European countries have a higher standard of living? Let us face it. YOU have to create a society that gives your people a chance to have a better life. People from another cannot come into your country and give you a better life. In fact you would object to having a foreigner come into your country to change your society. You might even pick up a gun and shoot at these foreigners regardless of their good intentions. Just look at what happen in Iraq, Israel, Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syria, Kuwait, ... George W. Bush and Tony Blair had the best intention in the world to help Iraqis and to seize Iraqi oil. But the Iraqis revolted against the well-meaning intentions of western civilization. Now there is more support for Islamic Extremists in the muslim world. So much for Nation Building. Under developed, third world countries can become wealthier and give their own people a better life. But these third-world countries must change themselves. No one else (not the US, England, Germany, nor France) can change third-world countries. This includes energy.
