- Like most of the videos on this playlist, this is geared for people who may not be deep into electronics, but are clever enough to want to fix their own stuff instead of throwing it away and destroying the universe. I indicate in this video that the two resistors (R71 and R8) or the diodes are the usual culprits. That is just my experience. I should have mentioned in the video to definitely check the two power chips for burnout. Those are the two chips that are screwed to the pair of metal heatsinks that go across the board..
Thanks a lot! This video saved me some money and changed the way I’ll interact with malfunctioning electronics going forward
Thank you for making this! Thought I might have to replace my charger, but opened it up and turned out R71 was blown just like you said. Replaced it and back in business!
p.s. If you need a 0.5 ohm resistor but only have 1 ohm resistors, you can put two 1ohm resistors in parallel (twist the leads together) to make a 0.5 ohm!
p.p.s The correct screwdriver bit to open the charger is a Torx Security T20H
When I first saw this I thought this was a video by Big Clive, It was quite a pleasant surprise to hear the voice of Quintron. Anyway, I wonder what causes these components to fail, it’s probably due to a lack of ventilation. Nice job!
Thanks man it looks like the R71 resistor was it for me. I didn't have a .5 or 1ohm resistor so I just shorted it with some wire. The resistor was actually reading like 5MOhm instead of just open. My solution may end up causing some other issue down the line but hey it's working again for now so 🤷♂️
Thanks, fixed it under a minute.
Nice 👍 I wonder how many of these things could be saved from landfill for the sale of a few cents of components. Ryobi at least seemed to make the board relatively easy to fix
What do you mean by “ruining”?
Auto correct of Ryobi to ruining corrected!

That resistor gets a lot of action (and R8 as well), so they should probably beef them up a bit. But yes, the board is incredibly easy to access, remove and service. The design is very clever with a minimum amount of screws. Everything fits together like a puzzle. Impressive. I have always found Ryobi tools to be the best value and they are innovative. They made the first really good, battery powered soldering iron!!
@@spellcasterlodge I came here for your great music and got info on my brand of tools.
do yourself a favor and keep away from the 40v products. I've disassembled about 100 bad ryobi packs to salvage the cells for other projects and every one of the 40v packs were totally toast.
I passed on the ryobi soldering iron and went straight to a ts100 running off ryobi packs or old laptop power adapter. it has a lot more control and tip selection. pine has came out with a cheaper alternative called the pinecil that you should check out.
Where do you get an SMD quarter watt one ohm resistor.thank you for the video.
I just heard a tornado ripped thru your neighborhood. Hope you are ok :)
Bought a charger just like this new in box on marketplace. Was straight up missing r71 resistor. But i got my money back and got to keep and fix charger for 2bucks lol thanks. And who sells resistors locally?
Mine Ryobi Intelliport 18v, turns on, once I install the battery it blinks red all night. I come out the next day and the battery is still dead. I had this outfit since 2014.
Hi, I have the same charger but there is no R71. I have R59 and C38 on my board but nothing directly above them in the R71 position you show. I do have R8 in the position you show. Have you had any troubleshooting with this variation board? Thanks for the informative video.
Me to I don't have one
I don't have a r71 whst do i do
That battery you have there was recalled due to possible fire hazzard
