I grew up in Waiahole and knew Mrs. Matayoshi. We would always stop and buy her papaya and banana. At times we would walk with her as she wheeled her wheel barrow to the main highway to take her place on the side of the road. She did not want anyone to help her, she was independent. This past May I went home to visit after 40 years and I did not recognize many of the places there. The school had changed and not all of the building there were there while I attended Waiahole Elementary and Intermediate School. My sister and a friend taught at Waiahole E & I school. I do miss the old days but not willing to live the life style again. We were poor and had to work at the School Cafeteria to pay for our lunches. The Cafeteria Manager was kind and always sent home SHORTBREAD COOKIES for my Grandma. Shortbread cookies became my favorite cookie to this day.
A howzit braddah me to I grew up there nice to hear people from that time still around 🤙🏽🤙🏽.

Such an interesting story, immortalized by an iconic song. That woman is a great example of hard work, kindness and perseverance. I’m sure she’s heard this song from the eternal realms of the spirit world, which is not even far from us.

Awwwwwwe what a memorable story for that “sweet Lady of Waihole “. Precious, precious. Those were the days of struggle and sacrifices. Thank for this video…so important to recognize historical people 😥😥😥cry from the heart of mercy. Lucky children.
I’m always told about this song and how she helped my grandma they even went to the same school sad to hear she passed

Yes I remember like it was yesterday I'm born and raised in waiahole homestead rd JUMAWAN those who been in waiahole long time know us really good my uncle and Wayne matayoshi was friends I remember going to Wayne's place with my dad & uncle to hunt pheasants in their field ❤️ R.I.P mrs matayoshi you'll always be in our hearts.

I’m sure every local who grew up on Oahu from pre 80’s must have seen this sweet lady of waiahole when taking da trip around da island . I can’t say I remember her but I do remember that location . I believe someone put up an actual fruit stand there I recall riding my bike past it on my around da island rides on mondays in da 90’s .
