- There are a TON of camera lenses out there, but if you could only pick one, what would you choose? Personally, I think I'd go with the versatility of a 24-105mm lens. It just seems to be a well balanced option. It's the Mario of camera lenses.

Love my 24-105 lens! Even at F4 the bokeh is still creamy and since I use an FX3 F4 isn’t a problem since I can crank it to 12,800 ISO and be fine in low light situations.
Oh yeah man! A Sony + 24-105 is a killer combo! Making me jealous ha
@@connormccaskill there’s room for one more. 😉 “One of us, one of us”
@@mondobytes totalmente, la gente se vuelve loca y se obsesiona al solo querer tener lentes 1.8 o 2.8. Teniendo lentes tan buenos como el 24 - 105
I have the Canon RF 24-105L IS. I have come to love this lens. I also have the 28-70 as a photo lens, but nothing beats the versatility of the 24-105. If I were honest I'd say that the f/4 aperture was the thing that gave me pause using the lens. But as I have gained more experience, I realize that the Canon L series 24-105 lens is very sharp and is about as close to the perfect walkaround lens in the Canon lineup.
I totally agree!
I own two RF24-105s and they've come in really handy for documentary-style and "live broadcasting" scenarios. It's a must have in any production kit especially in situations where you don't have the time and luxury of switching lenses.
Exactly
want to sell one?
I had the 24-105 EF 10yrs ago on my 6D and it produced amazing images that i have framed in my house. I have been shooting with the 24-70 2.8 rf for the last couple of yrs on my RF cameras and I still wonder if i should have saved $1k and just went with the 24-105. On a side note i have the 70-200 f4 rf and i cant recommend it enough. Super light and just stays in my bag all the time. Totally worth it.
I mean both the 24-70 and 70-200 pretty much cover everything you would ever need, but yeah there is something special about the 24-105! It's cool to hear that you enjoyed using it for photography! I mostly use it for video work
I got this same lens when I bought my R6 and I totally, 100% agree!
It can do it all and gets really great results!
Yeah man! It’s definitely not the most exciting, but it is just so reliable ha. Thanks for the comment 🤙🏻
I'm actually using the EF-L version and I STILL love it on my R50 and M50-2
thanks for your interesting point of view. I got the Canon RF 24-105L IS as a kit lens with my R6II. I just watched your video for some kind of validation and comforting. It is practical for exterior shooting, where you can reframe with ease and it is stable. I'd like a faster lens though, and there is the lack of choice from canon: the small prime lenses are cheap and seem nice and do some macro, but they have a slow autofocus for video. And the pro prime lenses are big and heavy, expensive, but they are faster and have a responsive AF. And the faster zoom lenses are really front heavy, expensive and cumbersome, though good quality. SO there is no perfect lens for my purpose (gimbal work with moving subjects dancing).
The lovely thing about the R6II (or other modern fullframes) is that you can shoot f/4 in a dim room at ISO 12800 and not even notice the ISO is that high unless you look at the info view. If you do care about the bit of grain thats there, just bump the correction slider to 5 or 10 and call it a day. The f/2.8 isnt going to get you much more out of focus in the background, so if that's really what you want you need a prime (or the 28-70 f/2) anyhow.
I love my 24-105, but did just pick up the 24mm f/1.8 for a lightweight walkaround alternative (or for gimbal, since I pretty much exclusively shoot with that at 24mm anyhow, and a 50mm if I want something else).
Appreciate your input man! Thanks for the comment
What do you mean by "bump up the correction slider"?
@@cosmindanes9435 noise correction in Lightroom
"The f/2.8 isnt going to get you much more out of focus in the background"... really?
I'm going to photographing a couple. I will be photgraphing them inside an old theater and some outdoor shots as well. Mostly shots close range up to maybe 15-20 feet or so. I cannot decide between this 24-105 or a 35mm 1.8. Any thoughts, suggestions? Someone please help! lol :)
Not only the aperture, check also the sharpeness, that makes a huge difference, but be aware of how much noise your camera have on low light. I have an APC-C camera and anything more than f3.5 in low light means a lot of noise and a lot of work in post processing. Today I use two lens, a 50mm f1.8 and a 100mm f2 due to low light situations and to be honest, I don't mind to be moving around taking the photos and as a beginner, I also feel that I learn a lot doing that.
For you, I'd go with the 35mm f1.8, but also having a 50mm would be great.
I've been using an A7iii with a Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 for B-Roll footage at work. I'm old and boring and shoot mostly sports, so I still use a nice camcorder, not sexy but gets the job done. Finally pulled the trigger on an A7iii for myself and bought the F4 24-105 G OSS along with it... I wanted a long focal length but 70-200 seemed like overkill. Also I got a good deal on a barely used one. It was a big purchase and I was honestly regretting not going with the 24-70 off the bat. BUT the more I use it, the more I love it. Eventually I'll buy the 24-70 because I will need better low light shots when Soccer season starts up for me.
I will say for people totally brand new to mirrorless, I wouldn't get this lens. Yes I love it, just wish it wasn't the only lens I have.
I'm hesitating between purchasing a lens, namely the RF 24-105 f4 and the 24-240 f4 - 6.3. I want to use this lens for travel. On the one hand I think the 24-105, but if I want to photograph an animal a little further away, I don't have enough zoom, but on the other hand I read that the 24-240 gives somewhat blurrier corners and has to be cropped in lightroom. due to vignette at 24mm. I need help choosing.
Does this lens works with canon eos 550d or not!
I believe (not positive) that if you shoot on an m50 like me, and use the viltrox speed booster instead of the standard adapter, 1. you get the range of 27-120, but you also get to drop the f/stop to 2.8 which is awesome :)
Thanks
It basically lives on my a7siii. The sony version is not parfocal, but pretty damn close. I zoom with it all the time when shooting video and it does a great job.
That’s awesome 👏
Subscribed. I just moved to the mirrorless world (R6 II to be precise) and while initially wanted to keep my EF lenses, decided not to and move to the RF glass world.
I will be going to Greece in about a month, and want to minimize the number of lenses to bring (just 2). I am definitely bringing my RF 14-35mm F4, so the decision is which second (and my "on-camera") should I bring: My RF 24-105mm F4? Or should I bring my RF 24-70mm F4? Given I am on a vacation trip, I think having the extra focal length would be beneficial vs having a wider aperture.
Thoughts? Your video is convincing me more to bring the 24-105 F4 given the extra focal length and size/weight.
Yeah I think the extra reach will be more beneficial for you!
What is your gimbal?
In 2023 I think an f4 less is a great option! So versatile and underrated. Great video dude!
Absolutely! Thanks man!
Would you recommend the Sony a7iv,fx3, zv-e1, or Canon r6 m2 for vlog/doc content? I also like to take pictures occasionally. great content
Hmmmm, difficult choice man. probably the Sony a7IV if you're trying to do all of those things. the FX3 is a wonderful doc camera, but the photos are lacking.
@@connormccaskill thanks for the feedback what's your take on the r5c
The R5c is an interesting camera. It’s solid, but requires a lot of extra things to make it work well. Personally not my favorite
I used to shoot the hell out of my EF mount 24-105 f4 canon on my Ronin M. Honestly so underrated!!
Very underrated!
My Panasonic 24-105 f4 (OIS) for my S5 is almost the only lens I use. When it gets super dark I might switch to a 1.8 prime.
That’s awesome 👏
Is this the usm or stm lens
Thank you for this video. One question: What camera and lense did you use for this video? Excellent color grading!
Thank you! I used the Lumix S52X with the 35mm 1.8. It’s all linked in my description if you want to check out everything I use
@@connormccaskill I knew it wasn't a Canon camera! 😁 And I am happy because I have Lumix S5 Mark II with Sigma 24-70mm f2.8. The colors of this camera are amazing, I made a night test here: czcams.com/video/2voLNy5iF80/video.html
Yeah I’m really happy with the colors from Lumix
Subscribed! Great video. Do you have a video or information on the gimbal that you use?
I do! Here it is czcams.com/video/KFtWMbDRRjg/video.html
Great video, which camera and lens did you use in this video?
I used the Lumix S52X with the 35mm 1.8
I still do not get it why people say "boring" to describe a lense, it is not a Ferrari you know! This is a dream lense for me, covers like 98% of my images and not as expensive as a F2.8 and also not as heavy.
Cool video and bad jockes that I like! lol! my gf keeps saying "dad jockes" and I am dad so like!
Cheers from Mexico
Absolutely! The weight difference is a big deal for me because I use a gimbal. I appreciate you commenting!
Nice video quality, which camera and lens did you use
Check the description
You haven't switched to Panasonic full-time? Still have a place for the R6ii?
I switched to the Lumix for all of my YT content, however, I still use the R6 for my commercial work primarily because the guys I film with are all on Canon. Keeps it simple to use one system
How well does the f4L of this lens do in low light/dusk or dawn?
For me it has worked fine, but you have to be comfortable raising the iso a bit.
Great video! Can you please share a link of the gimbal you were using? 😊
Absolutely! - DJI Ronin RS3 Pro: amzn.to/3qPJoB9
Although I have a video about the new DJI gimbal if you care to watch
Is this lens good for photography I’m trying to get this lens for my r50 cannon
wait for the sigma one. its made for apsc camera.
excellent lens!
It really is the GOAT ha
Clearly an under valued lens in both Canon EF and RF and Sony FE mount where I have owned it. It the first lens I buy for any system and then grow out from there. Easy to recommend and also affordable. Take care.
I have three 5D bodies (Mk 1, 2, & 4) the 24-70L f/2.8, 50 f/1.2L, & 70-200 f/2.8L is. I decided to sell them for a Leica Q2 or Q2M but wanted to keep the Mark iv body & 50mm f/1.2 L.
I think I’d be much better off selling the 50 too & getting a 2nd hand 24-105 f/4 is instead. It should be able to cover everything I won’t be able to do on the Leica.
Jealous of that Leica ha! But yeah that could possibly be a better option for you
@@connormccaskill I ended up selling almost all of my Canon gear, including 3 digital models, 3 Canon film cameras, a Leica M3 with 2 lenses & a ton of accessories, & a Rolleiflex TLR. That was enough to cover almost all the cost on a 2nd hand Q2M (within $800). I did end up keeping my 5D mark iv for color work & now I’m looking for a 2nd hand 24-105mm.
Wow, that's a lot! Do you feel like it was a solid trade? @@koobs4549
Great video. How does it perform with my EOS R5 at night? Im yet to receive it.
Well you'll have to contend with using a higher ISO if your scene isn't lit well. I'd say it'll get you by plenty fine, but if you are shooting a lot of night scenes you might consider a lens with a wider aperture.
@@connormccaskill Thank you. upping the ISO will not increase the grain. My scenes would not be underlit or only in the dark. For example a close up with key light and some fill. Is the HDR good on the R5 in general? I will shoot RAW obviously.
RF 24-70 f/2.8 better overall imho.I just use crop mode for extra reach when I need it and it becomes a 38-112mm
That’s definitely a fair argument! I think the lighter weight of the 24-105 personally works better for me
@@connormccaskill yeah, the RF 24-70 is a jonky boy.
I agree on everything but for gimbal I prefer the canon 17-40, lighter cheaper and with internal zoom,
Fair point! I guess I can just get away with it because the DJI Ronin 3 is just so strong
I dunno man, RF 24-70 f2.8 has been the perfect workhorse lens for me. If I need more reach, 1.6x crop mode gets me to 112mm…
Fair enough man, the 24-70mm is a solid choice for sure
The Honda Civic of lenses. Is it sexy? No. Does it have amazing stats? No. But it'll get ya about anywhere ya need to go

This video feels different now that the 2.8 version is out
😬 I can't ignore it is F4, and stinky, but so versatile, you can't overlook it. I would seriously consider it. Thank you for sharing.
Haha the f4 is definitely stinky. What is your go to lens rn?
Beard lookin good, brother.
Ha thanks man! Hope you’ve been well

Haha
I'm also using it to much lol
I enjoy your content, brother 👏 new sub from me

if you want less noise in low light, dont use log in low light. massive difference.
Ah good tip! I'll have to mess with that

Almost got this lens but I need a fast versatile lens so I went with the 24-70 2.8 canon of course
Definitely still a great option! Are you more of a video or photo shooter?
@@connormccaskill mainly photographer but i been merging into the video spectrum. But I got the 24-70 when the canon r first came out. Bought this and the 85rf 1.2 but I broke my 85 😭😭💔💔

I mostly use the 24-70mm sigma art 2.8 lens with my Sony a7c
Nothing wrong with that! Great choice still
