      He's 10 years older and he looks like he is hitting his 30s for him as a person. There are people in their late 20s that can pull off the late teens look but in this case not so much for Ben. Ben is still young and being 27 is not a bad thing at all. He could still pull off broadway/stage for this role but for a film not so much. He is giving his all in this movie and you cant blame anyone but the team that didn't think this through. It’s not that he’s too old- like he said look at grease, but there is still a problem: in Grease the whole cast at least looked the same age range, so they look like peers.
      The problem with the casting in DEH is they have some actors that actually look like 15 year old high schoolers so Evan does not look like his peers. Unfortunately this also means he looks over a decade older than Zoe, his love interest- which is just going to add another layer of the already uncomfortable aspects of that relationship. I mean I hope it does well, but people’s complaints are totally valid and film is a very visual medium.
      I get the whole point was to capture Bens performance but the best approach may have been an onstage proshot.

    i definitely agree that the crew didn't do him any favors when it came to how old ben looks in the movie. i think they really screwed him over stylistically with their visual choices, because the makeup to make him look more sallow or the wild hair just sort of made him look... his age. and while obviously that wouldn't be a bad thing for a different movie and I DON'T BLAME HIM FOR AGING, OBVIOUSLY, i think it really messed him up when it came to a more "teenager-y" appearance? if that makes sense at all.
    i really wish someone like andrew barth feldman or jordan fisher had been evan, and if not them, i wish they had brought the ENTIRE obc to the movie instead of just ben platt. it would have been a harder promotion, but it could have been a good career boost for new performers instead of just another mark on ben platt's filmography.

      Rachel mcadams didn’t have intimate songs to be sung with someone who looks 10 years younger than them. Tone and genre matter. Comedies get away with more because the tone allows it.
      This movie has a deadly serious tone. That makes suspension of disbelief hard for the general audience. The tone of the film asks you to take the content very seriously, and then all of a sudden you have a 30 year old looking high schooler break out into song. It just won’t work. It’s uncanny.

      @@jvanness90 I agree 100%. Also, since the show deals with grief and lying in order to make things seem better than they were, the age plays a crucial role in how this comes across. Since Evan is a teenager, you can sympathize with him a bit more knowing that he's young and doesn't know how to handle the situation without nursing anyone. An adult in the same situation; on the other hand, comes across as manipulative. Ben Platt doesn't look old he does look like an adult especially against everyone else in the cast.

It’s like not as many people would watch a wicked adaptation if indina wasn’t elphaba. In theatre once you play a character enough you get known by that character Ben is known for Evan and when I think of deh I think of him. I honestly don’t think Ben looks that old, there has been people play teens that look WAY older. He is old for the role. I am not shaming him, it is just that the role is kind of controversial and the only way it works is if you feel "protective" over Evan. We need to see him as a kid who is trying to do something kind and ends up messing everything up. If we see an adult playing him it will be harder to justify what most people see as him "manipulating everyone to get what he wants".

  • @beccabex321
    @beccabex321 Před 3 lety +3

    I saw Ben perform as Evan in 2017 and I will never forget the experience. I am blown away by his talent and ability to embody the character and I still love his voice for the role more than anyone else. That being said, I feel like the age issue is more critical with this story than a lot of other stories set in high school and part of being able to sympathize with Evan is to understand and really feel how young he is, which I do think gets lost when the actor playing him (on screen) is much older than the character. I also really do wish they'd cut his hair differently. I don't have a problem at all with them allowing his natural texture/curl to be a part of the role (I understand that they were going for "young teenage boys don't really do much with their hair a lot of the time" kind of look), but the cut is so long in the back it looks unbalanced and distracting, which I think puts his whole look and therefore age under more scrutiny. I agree that it feels that they didn't set Ben up for success by who they cast around him and his styling. BUT, all of that being said, I don't like how mean spirited a lot of the debate around this has been and I don't blame Ben for any of this. I think it's perfectly understandable why he would accept the role, even if he had some reservations about his own age, and it's up to the production to make the best decisions for their film.

Not to mention that any touch of autotune would be a disservice to the performances.
      IMHO it's why the movie shouldn't be a musical movie: there is no way you can capture it. The musical works best as a live musical. Also having a separate movie adaptation like they did with the book would have been nice and more interesting? To me it's the best course of action

    I think they definitely set themselves up to receive criticism about bens age because there are tricks you can do with lighting, and colouring a scene that can make an actor play older or younger, and it seems like they deliberately chose to make ben look older by shooting him in a way that highlights his age. In the first shot of the trailer I thought they had to have aged up the story because ben platt looked like a college senior at best. The weird cinematography choices, plus the lightning fast turnaround time, makes me nervous bc to me it says they spit this movie out as fast as possible, without putting much thought or care into it. I hope its not the case, but I think it might be.
