Back in 1978 I was listening to this and looking at the early morning sun out of the kitchen window, my parents were eating breakfast and my boxer dog "Prince" was sat at my side, I was 14 and loved music and the first few months of 78 were pumping out brilliant songs....how could music keep going at this rate! how did so many epic songs hit the charts at the same time??? from Kate Bush to punk, from Baker St to Lindisfarne it was all so good, life was good, my Suzuki TS100 and the stunning brunette girl I had the pleasure of looking at every time our school bus stopped to drop off children at Gwendraeth Grammar school, before driving on to our school a few miles away, kept my mind busy. The best childhood I could ever have had with the best music, the best friends and most of all the best parents, oh and the best dog, they have all gone but the music remains and the kitchen window in my house is south facing just like my parents house back then, I play this song.....and I am there....in 1978....looking at the sun.
77-80 were the best of music times.
@@Charlietwice Very true but others would disagree! .
This has genuinely moved me to tears. Life moves on but music can always take us right back to those places and times.
@@lisasmith77785 Thanks for the reply Linda, I was back in the area I lived as a child yesterday, with work, and walked the old woodland walk we trod so often as children in the 70's. I could hear the sounds of the past all around me as I walked.....but had no music with me! shame. Thank God for music hey?.
@@richardamner7432 you really have a wonderful way with words. What a beautiful description.
1978. I was 13 Years old.
2024 and i'm still 13 Years old.
Thanks to Manfred, Chris and all the others.
What a great band. What a timeless song. Still sounds wonderful.
I’m now a young 71, and this one had me jumping around. Not heard it for years! Still a great song.

Always...... a great song.
Now your talking.
Back in 1978 I was in the army in Hungary. I listened this song at the first time in Szeged on a warm summer night. It is connected in my mind with the feeling of freedom as those were my last days in the army.
That VOICE!!!!! That Keyboard SOLO!!!!!! WOW. Some songs will always be great...this is one of them!
Let’s all stop for a moment and gather here together to appreciate the uniqueness - no mere existence - of this song👐
I preferred California myself.
The Manfreds survived the break down of sixties culture and thrived and even got better into the seventies. Not too many bands were able to do that. Big kudos. 💐 👏🏿
Chris Thompson - one of the greatest voices in rock. Period.
Had the pleasure to meet him at Old Kent Road Workhouse Studio as a mere 17 year old and respect he was one of the nicest guys in the World of Music I have ever met! Not at all Ego unlike Manfred who at a party just rambled on how great he was! Yawn!!
Totally and without any doubt correct
And Chris Slade.... great drummer
Seppo Innanen do you really need to tell the world that you’re menstruating? The word period has no relevance to the comment
ONE OF BEST!!! OF COURSE
Gee hi everyone from Brussels in Belgium. I m.57 years old and I m so happy to read so many good memories, positive feelings, nostalgy about this period of our youthnesses. so great !!! Enjoy!
Tout pareil pour la musique Flo, .... et trop beau sourire sur ta photo ....
Wir werden älter, aber diese Musik gibt uns unsere Jugend zurück
Chris Thompson -what a legend -his work on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds album was also brilliant.
Can't believe this was from fifty years ago . How did I get to be so old ? !!!
Ahh, it was the Mannfreds ❤️✅
thats because it only 40 years old ............still whose counting
40 years ago!!
@@paultipper2023 well 40 years is much longer than i'm alive but i can't stop listening to it
Defo not 50, I remember it and I'm 47 !!
This is the best song of all time, i dont know one better, from anyone
Ich kann mich so verdammt gut daran erinnern, wann und warum ich dieses Lied hunderte Male gehört habe... 44 Jahre sind vergangen, mein Lied damals....
Me too :-)
Einfach Klasse unübertroffen!!!
Brings back such happy memories of around 79. Where has all the time gone. Gone but not forgotten 🤗
79 top year for music no doubt about it
Best of times!
Great times ..we were just starting out in life back then .I was 18 in 79 ..
Working at my first job ..Now age 62 and semi retired.
Bring those days back please 👌🎶
I saw him 2 days ago. He is 82 years old now and still on stage. Amazing.
Absolutely narcotic, a perfect piece in this version. The hammond organ completes the wonder of this music. Chris Thompson rules.
This and blinded by the light, best songs ever! ❤️
Try "Blinded by the light" by .... The Boss!
The Mighty Quinn rocks hard though 😜

Davy's on the road again
Wearin' different clothes again
Davy's turning handouts down
To keep his pockets clean
All his goods are sold again
His word's as good as gold again
Sez if you see Jean now ask her
Please - to pity me
Jean and I we moved along
Since the day - down in the hollow
When the mind went driftin' on
And the feet were soon to follow
Davy's on the road again
Wearin' different clothes again
Davy's turning handouts down
To keep his pockets clean
Sayin' his goodbyes again
Wheels are in his eyes again
Sez if you see Jean now ask her
Please - to pity me
Downtown in the big town
Gonna set you back on your heels
With a mouth full of memories
And a lot of stickers for my windshield
Shut the door cut the light
Davy won't be home tonight
You can wait till the dawn rolls in
You won't see our Davy again
Nice one …
Wearing women's clothes again.
Thanks.
I was 17 when this was released - My mate at the time David - He had just past his driving test ? - We would go out in his Dads Ford Capri - A beautiful motor Orange with a black vinyl roof - And this Recording was a staple on Radio one at the time (1978 I think) Listening to this has brought back some great memories thank you !
Dave also tought me how to ride a ... I was gonna say motorbike but it was the best of the Mopeds - the Suzuki AP50 - Steel -Unristricted & Metalic blue - And yes this great tune was playing somewhere in the background !
None more 70's. Brilliant story!
What a tune brings back happy memories from my early years
Thank u for this song, my parents, they sing your Song still in heaven. ❤️❤️❤️
And i sing along 💖❤️
Sat in bed listening to this 1am best, 2024, still one if tge best sings every written, what went wrong with the music, I was 8 year old when this was released and so proud to be part if a much nicer period in history .
people learned to sample and auto-tune ............... and music went downhill ........ no skill ........... no talent.
Growing up listening to this, I always had visions of this 'Davy' character who sees being on the run as a way of life. He's constantly moving from place to place, one minute he's in one place, the next, another and he probably leaves a lot of broken hearts behind him. He can't settle down in one place because he thinks of being in one place for too long as being dead. Being on the move all the time makes him feel alive. Well, that was my take on it anyway. Brilliant song anyway though, whatever the meaning behind it was.
My god! That keyboard solo, god! It’s fantastic!
Makes me think to Ray Manzareck from The Doors...
Loved Paul Jones, but this guy has also got an astounding voice!! Very unique 🤘
Who is this guy?
Manfred sure kept his amazing talent under wraps in the early days of the Manfreds.
Do wah diddy what?
What a Classic
The good old days
Get me in that Tardis and take me back to the 70’s and 80’s 😘
Man i love the 70s. One of the best songs
Best Moog / Hammond Solo Ever. Thanks Manfred !
Worthy of Keith Emerson !! two handed jobs are rare. Excellent
@@johnforeman2023 Keith Emerson is of course the bigger one for me.
This is definitely one for my funeral and has been since the 70's.
Can't believe this has only had 400,00 views
super theme of the 70s, classics, they will never go out of style.
My favourite manfred song of all time love it
Yeah Chris Thompson- magical Rock-voice ...and: Manfred Mann's genius since the roaring sixtees... amazing!
Must admit don’t know much about Chris Thompson, going to research. Top voice.
As my name is David, I'm going to post this song on my family and friends whatsapp account when the Doctors from UCLH and the DVLA say I'm cleared to drive again after suffering a Subarrachnoid Haemorrhage back on January 31st, I'm bloody lucky to still be here and even luckier to have suffered no severe effects from it too. I couldn't help wondering why they kept performing CT and MRI scans on my head, I don't keep my brain cell there!
Saw this band at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, England, in 1976 on the Roaring Silence tour. Brilliant! Still have the album on vinyl. :)
Fuck I love this song, beautiful arrangements, adrenaline at its best
fantastic , actual soulful emotive music , i remember when this came out , was never of the radio.....and a very different world .
Note to my 22 year old self - this is as good as it is going to get so make the most of the best time to be alive ever!

Manfred Mann Earth Band, a favourite Rockband of the 70s
Davey won't be home tonight. Saddest words but true.
first band I went to see at Newcastle City Hall, first song Blinded by the light - fantastic. I will always remember that memory
I was there as well. FN Mantastic
when pop music was art.
I love the voice of Chris Thompson
What a great band and lead singer. Now where did I leave my flares.
They're probably next to your platform soles mate.
A great song. Reminds me of my youth....
Just heard baker street on channel 187. For some reason reminded me of this
I was 12.. but just loved this…
One Milestone in the kind of music in the 70 ies.
Great music. I still listen their music today.
Always reminds me of clubbing in Edinburgh in '78! Fantastic song!
What a song, not heard another one like it. Rivals its near contemporary, Gerry Rafferty’s majestic Baker Street. That voice!
An era when you could sing and play live. Without any need for help!!!
Wunderful work. Outstanding in it's time and still is today.
Keyboard legend ♥️🎹🎶
Back in the 70s, we had a cat call manfred as my mum and dad loved this band so much, and I miss all of them so much, keep rocking ❤
Danach hab ich lange gesucht genau diese Syntiziser solo hammer
Best live band I have ever seen. Period
Love it. Not played enough. Thanks for posting.
A true gem, A masterful rendition - I love it.
Manfred Mann three great lead singers from 1964 to the late 70s what a great band
This was right in the middle of my o levels. I was a bit of a punk but loved great music. This is great music. So much great music 76-80. the best period ever.
Крис Томпсон очень и очень недооцененный вокалист и фронт мэн и ...... Соло на Муге пожалуй самое лучшее в истории рок музыки ( имхо)
The Voice ...
Great song, which sounds a lot like Status Quo. It was the first Manfred Mann song I ever heard when I was 7 years old on TOTP. :)
Just rediscovered this gem and it's rocking out true talent
What an absolute classic
i discoverd Manfred Mann (and later his Esrthband)at the age of 10 ..the First record (vinyl) i bought was the Album Mighty Quinn ...followed by Manfred Mann´s Chapter Three,,, and in the 70´s the Albums manfred Mann´s Earthband, Glorified Magnified, Messin, Solar Fire, The Good Earth, Nightingales and Bombers, The Roaring Silence, Watch, Angelstatiotion.... and i loved and love the all. Manfred Mann had always great Musicians in his Band.... i was 20 when this song was released on Watch 💖🎸🎹🥁🎧💞

Chris Thompson rocks love Manfred wish we had this music now, all we have now is (Crap) rap 😂
You are so right. Sometimes it seems to me music hasn't developed further since the fabulous 70s
I'm 15 years old and I hate rap... 😂

First heard this band in 1965 when I was 5, 13 years later they were still punching the shit outa the music scene, what a but load of talent.
