Thank you for these videos. I have always had problems with getting my ferrules to fit correctly. I was taught to do this process after the ferrule was on the rod. Very hard to do this way... I purchased a set of ferrule mandrills, 3M WetorDry Polishing paper, and 500 grit diamond compound. Got on my Sherline lathe and cleaned the females, then sanded the males to fit the females. This is going to make ferrule installation so much easier! Thanks for taking the time to share your processes! Look forward for more!

James, glad to see this male ferrule fitting process. It's been a couple years since your last video on ferrule work (Lapping a female ferrule for bamboo rods). Would really like to see a video on your using your male ferrule hone. Thanks.

Thanks for posting, that was one of the better lessons I’ve seen on this topic. I also reside in the GTA, and have built 1 rod - almost 2 if you include duplication of certain steps;) I slightly over cut my ferrule, but not enough to ruin it. I was going to ask why you didn’t finish the final fit in the lathe, until you mentioned the “leverage” when it’s installed on the blank which will make a difference. Looking forward to watching the rest of your clips.

An outstanding and patient tutorial. Finishing out my first ever bamboo blank in the strings this winter. Hope you are checking for comments... For the latheless, is it better to use a drill press (vertically) to fit ferrules vs. the electric drill jig/trick?? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I would guess the end result is similar, use what you have and take your time to sort out your methodology.

I've just restarted making bamboo fly rods and walked away from the craft because I couldn't get my ferrules to fit. This particular video was really helpful BUT I have one question. What is holding the female ferrule on the lathe and why does the female ferrule not pull off whatever is holding it on the lathe when the male ferrule is inserted and then pulled out of the female ferrule?

I think for most builders it is easier to fit the ferrules on the rod as long as you have a lathe. In the video the male ferrule is mounted on a drill blank and simply friction fit in place it holds pretty well. If you hold it while pulling on the female ferrule it tends to stay in place. Drill blanks are inexpensive and sold in fractional sizes which matches your ferrule size. McMaster CArr would have them so order 10/64 through 18/64 (5/32 -9/32)
