Why isn’t basketball star Caitlin Clark paid more?

  • She helped break basketball ratings records and bring in millions more viewers for the women's NCAA final than the men's. But those numbers aren't reflected in her rookie contract with the WNBA's Indiana Fever, whihch will pay her only around $76,000 for her first season. Compare that to San Antoni Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama, who took home a more than $12 million salary, and the gender pay gap in professional basketball looks more like a cavern. NBC Sports Boston host and reporter Trenni Casey joined Crystal Haynes to discuss that and her predictions for the upcoming NFL draft, which could be the most important one for the New England Patriots in decades.

    Bill Burr explained this very well over a year ago.

    Exactly. It's not a men vs women thing. It's a revenue vs no revenue thing. The men's league makes money. The women's league does not. It's a business. New men's football leagues routinely are started. But they never stay in business. Do the players cry, "it's not fair!"? I might be the best yo yo player in the world, but who's going to pay me millions of dollars for that?

    We need a serious discussion about overpaying athletes.

    Just like other small minor leagues and other women sports until people start going out and spending money and investing in the products those contracts and those salaries are going to stay right where they are and they can not even come close to what the NFL or major sports leagues 😮has done

    She is getting paid like one, in endorsement deals. Her WNBA salary is a function of league revenue, just as her endorsement contracts are a function of her marque status.

    So if Caitlin gets money in advertising why worry about the salary. Caitlin is fun to watch.

    It’s not a gender issue. It’s all about viewership and marketing. It may change with Clark and other marketable players!!

    Bottom line the WNBA doesn't make the same money as the NBA.

    More click bait channels feeding off her fame... She is not complaining, enough already. BTW, Reese is not even worth mentioning. Where is her shoe deal?

    They need to sue, just like the US Women’s Soccer Team did. The pay differential is obscene.

      Sarcasm? The judge ruled that the women's soccer team was actually overpaid. Very few people go to or watch the WNBA that's why they make much less. She should be able to make some decent money off of endorsements. I hope she does.

      The US women's soccer team lost to an allstar team of male teens.

    • @johnholst
      @johnholst Před měsícem +1

      That's a completely different situation. The US Soccer Federation chose to give more money to its' national players. The NBA is a private business and under no obligation to share any of it's revenue with the WNBA. In fact, the NBA does send money to the WNBA. If they didn't, the W wouldn't exist.

      USWNT wanted $72M, but they settled for 24M. Why? Because they had no claim!
      USSF settled because of the bad publicity, and the men settled because they didn't want to say no to the USWNT, but , USWNT had no claim to the men's world cup bonuses! None!

    The reason why I Caitlin Clark is being solely pictures yeah she is a big star yes she's a solid athlete but she is white but what about the other athletes you have two athletes both women of color and they both won the championship under her regime during the college basketball days
