  • Big Daddy of BEOSC gives instruction on how to test a motorcycle frame for geometric alignment. Covers major points needed to be checked in order for a motorcycle frame to be deemed "usable". Includes tips and tricks to this procedure and steps involved to obtain accurate data.

Not enough people making vids on frame align, thx for uploading...

    Useful vid!
FWIW my machinist/fabricator friends use Craftsman digital levels to align tubing and plate for the equipment they fab and love the things as they are far more accurate than a spirit bubble level. You could for example level all relevant planes of a frame using one then set the degree of a neck to be installed precisely.
After seeing it in action I ordered a couple for myself.
It's of course easy to check to see if your level is working correctly as any level should give identical readings when rotated 180-degrees.

That's great done in simple terms I can even understand!

Interesting video, very well explained! thanks for sharing.

Yes, we typically use quality (very sensitive) digital levels also in most of our work. However, I just chose to use the old-fashioned bubble levels in this video figuring that that is what most of our average home viewers have access to, but thanks for reminding folks of this.

Great video, where can I find books on this,

I agree with you to a certain degree. The small torpedo levels are only as good as your ability to assess just exactly how centered your little bubble is between the lines. Also, most are not shock proof enough, so that after the inevitable drop, they are no longer accurate. For those seeking maximum precision and that have a couple hundred bucks to spend, I recommend the "Digital Smart Tool" like you can get a Trick Tools (Van Zant) or Mittler Bros.

@richprint29 Either shim the drivetrain mount surfaces and sand or file the axle plate surfaces like explained in the video or use a different frame for the build. --Al

I guess it is kind of a chicken or egg scenario. I don't know what the weld trick would be without knowing for sure the type of metal we are dealing with. I would Google looking for any tech info or sources out there that would be able to tell you for sure what it was made of.
As far as the weakness in the frame, I would def. gusset and/or reinforce while you are fixing the crack, otherwise, it is just a matter of time before you will be doing the repair again.

How do I tell a Harley Wishbone frame year it was made?

I have a crack in my steel frame that is getting longer. It's a twin spar, main frame rail, with 3 x 3/4 inch rectangular section made of mild steel? Is there any trick to weld this spar given I don't know what the steel composition is? It is a powder coated finish so obviously that will have to be ground back. Looks like the crack is opposite a main stress point with engine mount and shock mount nearby. Perhaps it needs strengthening at that point. Thanks.

Most small torpedo levels are junk, Id use a better level for frame work. But good video none the less.

So how do you check head perpendicularity?

Do you mean trueness of the neck? So, the bike goes down the road with having to lean? I lay the frame on its side and block it until it is laying perfectly flat/level. Then, put a level on the neck. Basically, you are just positioning the frame so that the rake of the neck doesn't mess with your level check....

@TheABLTZ Anything is possible if you throw enough time and money at it. But, I strongly suggest you do some research and find out what it actually is. This will save you tons of time, grief, and pain....

I'm really not sure what you mean, but I do know that there is more than one way to skin a cat...as long as the pussy ends up bald..... I've never claimed to know that single best way to do anything. Even if there was such a thing, evolving technologies would change it the minute you had it....
