- Refinishing a beat up Squier By Fender Vintage Modified Mustang Guitar and turn it into an awesome Kurt Cobain inspired Custom Competition Mustang.
I transform this Mustang from a plain Sonic blue paint job to a super cool metallic purple finish with Surf Green Competition stripes!
I also fit a hot rail pickup in the bridge position along with installing new pots and orange drop capacitor.

I vote for the mint green pickguard. Great job Rob. Looks like candy! 💜
Thanks dude 🤘🎸👌 minty fresh candy coming up
I was gonna figure out what to cook for dinner but this seems more important to watch at the moment 😂
Dinner can wait 😂😂 #priorities
White pearl would look awesome!
Yay, mustang! Beauty, really digging that colour
Glad you liked it dude 🎸🤘
That competition stripes It's like they're glowing.
They're are hot 🔥👌
Green pickguard looks better for me , Rob what you do here its awesome!! , congratulations for the Work , best video now haha!
that is the coolest guitar build i’ve ever seen. the spray paint came out surprisingly well. it’s a really great eye catching guitar rob. good job dude keep it up 👍

This guitar is absolutely gorgeous, done a real awesome job Rob!
Thanks bro glad you like it 👌🎸
Superb video Rob , couldn't wait to get home to watch this video , looks brilliant , the good old mustang ! 👍🎸🎸👍
Thanks dude glad you enjoyed the video and like the Stang 🎸🤘
Damn... This is one of the best guitars I've seen. That mint green pickguard would look fine on it. You did a kickass job as always. That hot-rails pickup sounds great, really dig the stripes. Outstanding!!
Thanks dude 🤘 really pleased you like it 👌
I love this seeing the whole project in one video
Awesome was a pain to cut over 2 hours of footage down 😂😂
I’m ordering one next weekend, just by the sound of them, they’re a great sounding little guitar and definitely gonna be a Power Pop beauty!
Good choice!
Lookin very nice . Great color choices .
Thanks dude glad you like it
Damn that is so cool. BEST VIDEO FROM YOU!!!
Thank you very much dude 😎🎸👌
Looks good with the mint pick guard. It does look cool though 😎 and unique
Masterpiece! I am all for the mint green pickguard
Thank you 🤘🎸 minty freshness coming soon
Sounds great. Looks great. A winner all round.
Thanks dude 🤘🎸
Fascinating! Well done, Rob.
I had a '74 Lotus Elan in 'Roman Purple', I'm sure the Mustang will be more reliable.
Ooh now that's a cool car and colour, glad you liked the video 🎸🤘
All I can say is this is the coolest replica I have ever seen good job!
Thank you very much
I think a white pick guard on the guitar would make it look like the replica
Great colour combo!
Glad you like it 👌
This vid is so relaxing. The guitar looks fantastic - LOVE the purple color - not enough purple guitars out there.
I'm pretty chilled 👌🎸 oh I agree I just love purple Guitars 🤘
You are killing Rob !! Kick ass my friend.
Thanks bro 🎸🤘👌😎
Looks great
My favourite video of yours yet! That thing looks and sounds amazing. I wonder if we’ll see a Robster tele some day, 🤔
Glad you like it dude 😎🎸 oh this will happen 🤘
Looks cool. It has some interesting tones. I like it as is with the current pickguard.
I do like a Mustang
The Anticipation of this video was worthwhile wonderful job John Mint guard yes mint green stripe looks ace keep them coming my man
Who's John 😂😂 glad you enjoyed the build and the guitar 🎸 will be more minty fresh builds in the future 🤘🎸
The Guitar Manifesto I don’t know where this John came from 😆
😂😂 no harm done
That looks lovely!
Thanks she's a beaut 👌🎸
The mint green guard is killer.
She looks bad ass! Awesome work man!
Thank you very much 🤘🎸
I've owned both, a Squier Vintage Modified Mustang and a Japanese Fender Competition Mustang from the early 2000s. Frankly, the Squier came with better hardware and electronics than the MIJ and it was built just as flawlessly.
i'm about to do the same thing to a fender jaguar, so this video is really helpful!
glad it's helped you out
@@theguitarmanifesto what brand is the paint?
Metallic purple are real beauty on mustang 😍
glad you dig it dude
I would kill for a Robster logo!!! Great restore work Manifesto Looks great! Love that competition stripe! I'm high as heck though from sniffing paint fumes..lol pearloid pickgard total vintage... Awesome guitar playing at end!
This was my favourite build so far 😎😁 the Robster logo is cool
it's finally here!! so excited.
Oh yes she has 🎸🤘
The Guitar Manifesto i love the colors that you chose, i think that the mint guard would look great with the black switches/pickup cover but i like the pickguard as it is :)
Looks and sounds great fella
Thanks dude 🤘🎸
Nice work rob!
Thanks 🤘🎸
Proper smart mustang mate 😎🤙🏻
Glad you like it Mark 🎸👌
Cool video and cool guitar
Thanks dude 🤘🎸
I could never find a purple precision bass so I bought a cheap one to paint. I'm past the point of no return took it apart and sanded the finish off. Thanks for this video I've got low expectations so I think it will come out great. Pearl white pickguard white pickups white control knobs all I need is a headstock decal.
That's very cool, just take your time make sure you wipe the guitar done with white spirits. Dust will be your enemy so do light thin coats.
Only just got the chance to watch. What a transformation ! Brilliant job mate . Sounds excellent and that purple looks awesome with the surf green stripes. I thought the mint green guard looked good , not sure if I prefer it to the torty or not tbh. 🤟😎🎸
Thanks Shaun, she turned out just as I hoped
i love the purple and it soundes great to, they should do an offi ial model of this colour it looks so good
Would be awesome if fender or Squier did
Really great relic.it looks more than just a " relic" though , it's a unique guitar.my dream is to recreate my old 1965 mustang that was dakota red over desert sand.the guy I bought it from said it was the lounge guitar as far back as 1975 on the " Pacific princess " cruise ship.it was stolen by a pawn shop worker when my friend pawned it on loan....how bad is that.would be nice to do this to bring it back.great vid and nice finish.
I'm glad you appreciate what I did with the relic finish really gives it a vintage vibe, oh man bet that was a fine looking guitar.
What a sad way for it to go missing
Really well done! Thanks for sharing the process!
Glad you liked it
@@theguitarmanifesto this actually got me thinking about trying to re-fin a guitar. do you have any recommendations on brands of paint?
Go for it, any car paint will do the job. Just make sure you shake it well and it's at the right temperature
@@theguitarmanifesto haha cool! I think I want to do a Mustang in dark British racing green. Maybe with a white stripe or even a big race car number on it. Thanks for the info, I really appreciate your help!
That sounds awesome stripe or number 🎸🤘
Looks great. You did a great job!
Thank you very much dude 👌🎸 hope you're keeping well bro?
The Guitar Manifesto Thanks man. Yes all is well. Just take it one day at a time. I miss going to concerts I miss a lot of things that were normal before Covid. I hope you and your family are staying healthy and safe.
Yeah bro it's pretty lame at the moment boredom is an understatement 😷😭 yeah we're all good just rolling with the blows 🤘😎
Really cool project, and awesome color, but I think you've got one pup soldered in the opposite direction. When the switches are at the in-phase positions (looking the same way), the tone is clearly out-of-phase, and vice-versa. Try desoldering the cables of the neck pup and solder them the opposite way.
Well if it's the wrong way it's a factory error on the wiring as I never touched the wiring on the neck pup I only swapped the hot and ground on the bridge pickup. I actually was thinking it sounded out while editing the video but put it down to not playing a Mustang for a while 😂 😂
I'll have a look when I swap the Pickguard over
@@theguitarmanifesto then leave the neck pup as is and swap back the cables of the bridge one. :)
@@stavrosniteros3906 yeah that was my thinking too 👌🎸
the red and green were tied together leaving me to think the hot was the white.
after messing around this morning the white and red should be tied together and the green is the hot.
guess is swapped the polarity around.
The purple kept me thinking how fucking good a mustang in a purple about as light as the sonic blue on the mustang would look.
Congratulations from Canada, Rob!
Thank you hope it ain't too cold over there
@@theguitarmanifesto Thanks. Unusually warm and might hit 23 C today, already 17 C, which is about 62 F.
Dang warmer than here 😮 in the low teens and constant rain all month 🇬🇧😂
Man, I actually was on the surf green team, but I gotta say that guitar's gorgeous!
I thought it would be a unique combo 🎸🤘
Looks very cool Robster. Your own signature guitar...even if you have to built it yourself !
Hey Van Halen did it 😂😂🔥🎸
LOVED the video, Rob! LOVE the colors, and I REALLY LOVED the headstock... But I'll be honest, one of the reasons that I was REALLY interested in this video, was to see how you do your clear coat... Clear coating always gives me problems... It's like a tightrope between bein smooth enough and not sanding through... So, I was really curious how you did yours... But as it turns out, you do your's JUST like I do it, anyway! Lol... And I think Kurt'd be proud... Instead of just buyin a KC signature guitar, you built your own using less expensive stuff... You know Kurt wouldn't just buy a signature model of ANYBODY'S and just play that, lol... Way to go, hoss!
Rattle cans is hard to get smooth you have to wet and dry just make sure you give it a thick coat, sand in stages and a good finishing polish after always look mint 🤘🎸
This was always intended to be a beater finish so not too bothered, glad you like the Mustang 👌😍
I've had all the KC signature models, never feels the same as playing your own build.
Reminds me of playing in a covers band feels so wrong and unsatisfying
I honestly doubted at first at would look good but 🤯 so good
Oh never doubt the guitar manifesto 😂😎👌🎸
Good looking guitar
Thanks dude 😎 appreciate
I have a 56 duo sonic. Im tempted to do something similar
a yellow or a neon-green pickguard would suit it good. great job.
Class mate, looks the biz
Thanks bro glad you liked it
Awesome job on this Rob !! weird that the surf green isnt coming out in the video. And I like it with the mint green guard .. which is odd cause i hate mint green pickguards .. lol
It's light pastel colour so plays havoc with the camera, looks awesome in the flesh
good job, only difference in the way you paint and the way I do it is I start with the edges and then do back and front because I ruined a good job by being too heavy on the edges after I'd made the front look pretty, had to sand it back and start again, I really don't like doing things twice. Cheers Pete. PS leave the tort guard.
Ooh it's not fun when that happens ☹️ thanks Dad 🎸🤘
Great intro
Glad you liked it 🎸🤘
I’ve been thinking about trying something like this on my jazzmaster. Think i might try the same purple you used
Awesome go for it, just take your time
I love it
Awesome 🤘🎸😍
I’ve been wanting to refinish my mustang to shell pink and Jesus this is making me want to do it more!
Oh you so need to do it
The Guitar Manifesto plan on it! We need more videos like this rob! Builds showing every step by step process, absolutely love this type of content, keep it up!
check some of my older videos I've gone into more detail on wiring etc
Yup mint gaurd...i was typing it in as you pulled it out
Mint green has gotta be seen!
Minty fresh 🎸🤘
Man that thing looks amazing!! What a color combo! I think the tortoise pick guard looks so rad and unique with that purple. Awesome work dude!!
Thanks dude I wanted something a little different 👌🤘
I LOVE NEW GUITAR DAY! Any minute I’m expecting the delivery man to show up with my Squier 60’s Classic Vibe Mustang! It’ll be my first Mustang. Strange I never got one before now....I’m a huge Nirvana fan and even seen em’ live back in 91’! Even worked at Guitar Center but never even considered adding it to my collection!
Oh you so need to have a Mustang in your arsenal awesome guitars, definitely the most fun guitar to have laying around
It just arrived!! So stoked!! Time to examine this baby head to toe then plug in and rock out!!! 🤩
@@rockerbob949 ah dude 😎 you're gonna love it 🤘 enjoy
The Guitar Manifesto other than the sharp fret ends, already fixed em’, it’s so rad! Plays different than any other guitar I own. Hard to put down! I have to get this G.A.S under control. I’ve lost count! Lol
RockerBob how do you fix sharp fret ends?
Amazing, I love the lipstick pickup in the bridge. Beautiful 🤩
Edit: not lipstick, I’m blind. It’s a hot rail. Still beautiful!
Either way it kicks ass 😂🤘🎸
Competition stye guitars are awesome
Oh most definitely 🎸👌
🔥🔥🔥
Great build ,she's a beauty.BTWHave you tried those solderless pick up wiring harnesses or are they a waste of money?
This Makes me want to refinish my mustang with racing stripes but I don't wanna screw anything up and don't have that kind of time
Take your time painting and make time to paint🎸👌
Competition mustangs are the coolest
Oh they sure are
I’m getting ready to install a humbucker in the bridge and was wondering if you kept the volume pot a 250K pot or did you use a 500K? I’m only seeing people use 250k pots but usually a 500k pot is used for a humbucker. Any thoughts?
I need that guitar 😍
She's a beaut ain't she 🎸👌
The Guitar Manifesto Yeah you can’t go wrong with a mustang
Looks good with the mint guard but the surf green stripes clash with it imo. So i would leave this tort on it.
Nice build. Sounds like the phase switching is opposite. When you said it was in phase, it actually sounds out of phase
Yeah I resolved it soon after listening back 🤣
I have a new vintera mustang and I know its sacrellige (spelling) to want it a different colour than lake place blue, but... do you think doing it the same way you have done your would be ok. should I sand off all the shine first or just rub it down a little...
Your guitar paint it how you like, yeah just scuff the finish
Guitar looks so good. I tried doing the competition stripe but the paint went under the tape..ugh
Ah mate you need good quality masking tape for sure
Brand of paint used for the surf green?
🙌🙌🙌
SCHWEET BUILD!!!!!!!! You totally took a shit guitar and turned it into a masterful piece of art!!!! You had me crackin' up when you put that ROBSTER sticker on!!!!!! Fucksake! So glad your channel exists.....👏
Yeah she turned out good 🎸🤘 plays real nice too, oh the finishing touch 😉 glad you love the channel
Lo hubieras puesto brillo al 100% pero está bien Te quedó súper no sabía que se podría pintar de esa manera.
Ideally a poly gloss would be best on a refinish, I wanted a relic look so car lacquer work well for this job.
MINT GREEN!!!!
Just my personal opinion but I think a white pearl pickguard would look better on this guitar. nevertheless really good job! 🤘
Personally I've had a lot of Mustangs with pearl Pickguards so want to avoid that, thanks dude 🤘😎👌
What kind of sanding sponge would you reccomend?
Just look for a fine coarse sanding sponge
Honestly I wasn't sure about your plan in the beginning. After seeing it finished I am looking around for a cheap Mustang! Also great job putting the video together.
Thanks dude I had a weird idea and it played off 😂🤘 awesome hope you find one soon
So wanna get one these Mustangs and do an EVH stripe paint job on it 😂
That would be sick
quick question, is one can of lacquer (400ml) usually enough to do one guitar?
1 usually enough 2 if you want a heavy coat 👌
Hey Rob! I’ve thought of refinishing my Mustang to a Dakota red. Same damn guitar as this one! Is it worth it?
Most definitely 🎸👌
I think this guy likes mustangs
No shit 😂😂
Do you not stick the decal under the clear coat?
Yes
Hey Rob, just caught this video, and I got a question about Mustangs. The cigar bar, it is supposed to be perfectly perpendicular to the bridge plate, or do some lean back? Thanks!
They tend to lean back due to the way it's designed
@@theguitarmanifesto thanks Rob! Ive seen them in all sorts of positions, I have a VM Mustang that is perfectly straight up, and a Vintera that is way back. Prolly gonna lock both at some point, but thanks for the reply and insight!!
Guess it comes down to the tension on the springs
@@theguitarmanifesto I did think about that as well, but both have 10s on there. The only difference I do know of, is the VM has 3 positions for the springs to hook on to on the posts, while the Vintera only has 2. Hmmm 🤔
@@99gprix I'm not entirely sure if I'm honest 😁
you don't see many FORD mustangs in metallic purple either!
No you really don't, such a cool colour 👌
Awesome results!!!
Well done. Rob.
And nice signature decal.
How did you make it?
Post about making decal next time.
Thanks dude glad you like it.
Ordered the decal off eBay
@@theguitarmanifesto I also vote for mint green pickguard.
Hopefully this Mustang now has a mint pearloid pickgaurd ??!!! Just watched today and we cringed at puttjng the tortoise shell red back on top of purple Noooiooooooo!!!!! LOL 🤘🏻😈🤘🏻
Who owned this guitar before you- Johnny Rotten?!
It was certainly played to death
I want my headstock painted lake placid blue...like the original. Fender failed there...
How much did this guitar cost to build
I'll post a video soon
I do think mint green will look better
so where can i order one? lol
One of a kind 😂😂
Wait aren’t you supposed to buff the body
No need to wait, it's a relic job
