HI FRIENDS!!! SO FLIPPING SORRY it's been a few weeks since I've uploaded... ya girl's computer finally decided to kick the bucket. But it is now FINALLY repaired and I have a bunch of vids coming at ya in the next couple days/weeks! I actually filmed this one about 3 weeks ago! WOW! brb slowly now getting to the edits I fell behind on. BOI OH BOI DOES IT FEEL GUD 2 B BACK!!!!!!!!!! ;) I hope all has been groovy with you in the last couple weeks! My computer dying was oddly a really nice re-charge... some big things are changing here in the coming month or so! (in the best way)
I also just found out that I'm moving in a couple weeks. It's going to be an exciting whirlwind. That's for sure! Many many things to share! It'll be interesting living in a non-vegan and non-zero waste space again. So send any advice ya have!
p.s. I luv u. thank you for reading this. Thank you for watching this video. Thank you for being uniquely YOU! The world needs your deliciousness!!!!!!!! Much luv and big big hugs xoxo

In regards to your comments about the mascara, you’re not being a hard ass. It is deceptive, wasteful, and it’s green washing. It sucks that it’s so hard to find products that are truly packaged responsibly.

In Germany we actually have a brand where you keep the bamboo Package and just refill. So you only buy the inside than 🙂👍🏼 the brand is called ZAO and they have almost everything to refill after you bought the bamboo version, like a palette for example ☺️

I love the Besame cake mascara. It wil last me years! Since it's a dry formula, it doesn't spoil within a few months like normal mascara. It comes in a little metal tin and in cardboard packaging. The only plastic is a little plastic brush that comes in a tiny plastic sheet. And you can get refills!
But I figured that this beats buying a new tube of mascara every 3/4 months.
Only drawbacks: It has a little learning curve. And it's not water proof.

    • @vvlon
      @vvlon Před 4 lety +2

I tried the Kjaer Weiss mascara because it is an aluminum tube that you can keep forever and just buy refills and I thought it was an amazing idea. However, I didn't like the mascara at all which was very disappointing! So I switched to Elate but my dream would be that they change their packaging a little so I could get the best of both worlds!

I really appreciate you saying that “clean” skincare is not necessarily better or safe. I was on the clean beauty bandwagon for a long time, but like you I’ve been researching skincare more and understanding that sometimes the “natural” or DIY option isn’t the better option. I also appreciate the acknowledgment that you’ve given skincare advice in the past that you’re realizing isn’t correct. It shows a great deal of humility! We all make mistakes, but it’s what we do after we realize we’ve made one that matters. I’d love to see a video on this topic. Thanks for another great video! 💕

  • @sophiebird1365
    @sophiebird1365 Před 4 lety +41

I completely agree about the elate mascara! It's wastefull and unnecessary to put that extra layer of bamboo over it just to make it appear "eco friendly" when it's still just a plastic bottle like every Maybelline mascara. To me it's just another form of greenwashing :( if companies want to sell the zero waste idea then they need to actually try their hardest, because obviously we as consumers are passionate about the products we use aligning with our values, and we are not dumb.

I'm so glad you've acknowledged some questionable skincare advice you've given in past videos! As someone who has been a huge skincare nerd for a long time, I am still taken aback when influencers push "natural" skincare products that may actually be ineffective or quite harmful to the skin. I know you never meant to give out advice that isn't in your viewers best interest, so I am happy to see you recognize these issues and are making moves to try and clear up these things up :)

Meow Meow Tweet now has refill options for a lot of their products! They come in larger aluminum bottles to refill the glass bottles (and keep reusing the pumps), and then you send the aluminum bottles back to Meow Meow Tweet. One of my favorite companies also!

One things I’ve been doing though is making my own body butter. I whip my own Shea butter and it’s amazing, and zero waste. I also love using jojoba oil for my skin. It does have that oily feel at first but then it soaks in your skin very nicely, especially if you have dry skin. The other thing that is great about it is that it doesn’t have a pungent smell to it and it’s oil properties are very close to our natural sebum oil properties on our skin.

For the stuck shampoo bar- u could try running hot water over the back of the tin that it's stuck to. If she's real melty it might do the trick. If all else fails, my last resort is usually stabbing a knife into the middle of the bar- it usually just breaks into 2 pieces, and the force of it breaking apart gets it unstuck from the container without a ton of hacking, haha

A quick note on the oil you use on your body: it's something you should only use sparingly as it has lavender and rosemary essential oils which are some of the most sensitizing ingredients used in cosmetics, natural or synthetic. Using them often (particularly in leave-on products) can cause allergies, horrible rashes, and even just acne in response to irritation. The way the coconut oil soaks in sounds amazing though

I am so glad that you are going to start talking about skin care ingredients because I find that a lot of eco friendly products use stuff like coconut oil and essential oils in their products and both of those are really bad for your skin. Like if you have oily skin, coconut oil is highly comedogenic and essential oils have been proven to sensitize your face skin over time. Also, LOVE that you have stopped using straight Aloe on your skin. My motto is if it isn't made for your skin, it's not meant for your skin. Caveat to that is I LOVE making my own body butter and I totally know what you mean about it taking a long time to sink in but tbh I usually take a shower at night anyways OR I'll put significantly less on if I'm putting it on in the morning. Anyways.....love this video and thank you for always posting such great content ❤️

I always wash and precut mine because it's more convenient when I want to use them, so that's pretty awesome to know. I'm definitely taking notes on brands to try from all your similar vids. Thanks for the reviews!

That is my favorite favorite shampoo bar!!!!
So I put a piece of fabric underneath the bar that was long enough to come up on both sides. I would just pull on the fabric to get it up and pull it off the fabric. Also after a while the fabric would pick up enough runoff from the wet bar that I was able to wash my hair with it, useing it like a soap saver.
But yes it gets super stuck to that tin!
I also kinda think that not 100% put together kinda squishy formula is also why it's so good.

I’d recommend the Matcha Hemp cleanser by Krave beauty! I’m not sure on their environmental policies, but they are a small company(by a CZcamsr :)) that is all backed by dermatological science, but it’s so hydrating and calm on the skin! Also, super reasonable in price!

Have a look on Etsy for Dirty Hippie Cosmetics in Australia - boutique handmade mascara and other cosmetics that are eco friendly, and I believe they ship globally. I believe they have a bottle recycling program for the glass bottles they come in (but only if you’re in Australia) and are mailed out in minimal post consumer recycled compostable packaging. 🍭

That's an interesting thing you touched on there. What if someone is treating themselves very occasionally to something that they feel is good for their mind body and soul, even if its in a plastic bottle or bag? I feel like there's a massive improvement going from buying dozens of things in plastic to perhaps prioritise the MOST valuable things you absolutely will use, reusing their containers as much as you can etc. (hopefully this is coming across as opening a discussion and not being shitty/accusing lol)

I also tried that exact same aloe & tea tree shampoo bar and was excited about it. I didn’t have the mushy problem, mine stayed quite solid. As soon as I switched off those shampoo bars, all that buildup washed out.

Omg I found your channel when you had about 20,000 subs and I was starting to be more substantial. For some reason you hadn’t shown up on my feed for quite some today my dear, you did, and just encouraged me more to make much better choices. I am not completely completely dairy free and I also still eat seafood (Im working on changing that, but for my heart my doctor wants me to still be eating some foods such as salmon for the “beneficial health properties” these poor babies have) I’m learning that my doctor just doesn’t care to know much about the fact that I can find the same exact nutrients within a pill. I feel stupid for saying that but I have a new heart doctor as well as finding the proper vitamins I need to help lower my cholesterol, blood pressure, and generally found a fake fish product to replace the satiation for fish, it’s just extremely expensive at my Whole Foods. I wish that I wasn’t so stuck I’m on still eating fish, but it’s such a norm in society (sadly) and my grandfather spent a lot of time fishing where I’m from. I believe that memory of being with him in those moments honestly mentally kept me trapped because he believed that eating animals was completely normal (not just our beautiful sea life). I stopped eating red meat and chicken when I was ten years old after watching a peta video that ripped my soul at out the time. I know that I can stop eating fish but I still have this strong craving for it and I’m working on completely changing that. We can’t all be perfect but I know that eating our planets beautiful creatures is inherently wrong.
I’m am not even 60% zero waste because it’s hard to find products within what I can afford when it comes to cleaning supplies and beauty mostly. I’m SO GLAD I’ve gotten back on your channel and have your notifications on because you have given me that extra boost to do everything I can to help the planet.
I have a six month old who deserves to see the world evolve in a beautiful and kind way.
I’m so proud that over 180,000 people on this channel are at least listening to you and the simple but also hard in certain ways to change our world. You have such a genuine message and spirit. Thank you for what you do and I’m going to do my best to care for our planet on my part as we all should.
At least small change is change in the right direction for some.

16.00 - bar thingy - scrape around the outside of the bar, then stick it in the freezer and see if it pops out - worst that can happen is it seperates and goes a bit funny; worth a shot
Or melt it and pour it out into a silicone mould/cake tin
    Good luck!

I know someone who was throwing away EVERYTHING in their bathroom in order to purchase "greener" stuff 🙄 a lot of it was cheap garbage, Suave, etc - things I normally wouldn't buy because of animal testing, or other reasons. However, my roommate and I took it & used it & it lasted over a year. Making better choices is GREAT but there is nothing helpful about throwing away a perfectly good product/item in order to buy a "greener" option. Okay, end rant. I absolutely understand your concern with putting coconut oil on your body and having to worry about being oily. So, what a lot of people do here in India, is after you take a shower, just take the oil (i take very small amounts for diff parts. You can see what works for you) and rub it on your body like you normally would but while you’re still wet. Like right after you shower. And that way when you’re drying yourself with a towel, you don’t have to rub the towel on yourself, you can just dab it and the water’s off. It’s pretty cool, feels soft and nice. I personally do that so I can vouch for it! 💕

I also have problems with coconut oil not absorbing. I had really good success with apricot seed oil and grape seed oil. I put in on after the shower and let it soak in for about 5 minutes. Then if there is any excess I dry off with my towel again.

the water will wash off some of it but leave a bit in your skin. Its the perfect amount for me. i do this all the time but its best before bed. Hope you try it!!
