The best description I’ve heard of Heilung came from a CZcams comment on one of their videos and I unfortunately forget the persons handle so I can’t give them credit but they said “Heilung makes you homesick for somewhere you’ve never been and nostalgic for a life you’ve never lived” which I think summarizes them perfectly!

I'm a diehard metalhead and I've never been into modern mainstream music as it is too generic. I was very close minded when it came to music. But after discovering Nordic/Scandinavian/Germanic music, I couldn't help myself from diving deep. It is so primal and "natural", and it resonates with my soul.
One of my favourites is an artist named Eivor. She is from the Faroe islands and not only does she write awesome music in English, but she also writes and composes songs in traditional Faroese.
I highly recommend these two songs by her..

I saw them live in Toronto September of '22 and, it was exactly what I had been led to expect - more of a ritual we all shared than a performance we watched. This song in particular captures the old Norse world view of human interaction with the magic that inhabits the world of nature all around us, and within us - similar to the invocation at the beginning of each public ritual. Maria's regalia places her as a traditional seidr (more properly seiðr), a term you might enjoy researching.

Can I just add som points that are important in seeing this? The most important being that the child is born under an eclipse 0:56 (seen in background several times). According to previking believs they had very special gifts: hamnskifte (= the ability to change appearance), age shift, talking to animals, and healing as in when she heals the bird. The previking time and it's religion in nordic countries is much more female directed than the religion in the later years (viking gods like Tor and Oden with all the everpresent masculinity... ). Actually it is more animistic than divine. The language they use is only partially known and therefore reconstructed. The final scene is when she reunites with her totem, the muschosoxe. (Partially reposted from my earlier comment on this movie)

She is a changeling. Capable of living any moment of her life that she so chooses. Which is why you see her in different stages of womanhood. This story is based off of ancient coins/charms that depicted people being born under the eclipse possessed.

The end of the video: When your sun goes down, become your Spirit Animal.
Or, if you're not as poetic as I am, Anoana has passed on her genes with the new infant, and her time has come to pass on. She does a "traditional" call to bring in her Spirit Animal, and they become One.

  • @MrBern91
    @MrBern91 Před rokem +1

    Here's my input:
The girl was born, and as we saw, the baby had antlers from her birth. This signifies that she is not entirely human, but not a beast either. She is something else, in between. She was brought up by Nature and the wild as her mother and we notice there's more to her when she managed to revive a dead bird so it could fly and live on. We can also see her being in harmony with Nature on several occations during the video, for example when the child rests on the ox. Then, she grows up, becoming an adult and eventually will grow older. Perhaps some kind of guardian ('Landawarior Anoana' which is actually sung in the lyrics), or demi-godlike being. Towards the end we see her charge against the musk ox before the video is cut off. This signifies her death, and the end of a life, or an existence.
So in short, I'd say this song is about birth, life and death, which completes the cycle before it can begin a new again.
As for the group as they perform the song, they signify the magic or spirit of Nature, or the life-forces driving us forward.

  • @arjantjeee
    @arjantjeee Před rokem +3

Marias high pitched singing is Külning, a herding call that roots in shamanic singing (Galdr) along with hornplaying, echos were thought to be the answers of the spirits.
Anoanas story seems to be tied to the cycle and story of the runes. Some positions in how the shamans hold the antlers refer to the runes. They frequently make the U shape of the rune Uruz. Her carressing the ox as a kid symbolises her caressing her primal powers. But as we develop, old habits can become selfdestructive as we dont need them anymore.
As an adult she was ready to let her old self go so she fully charged into her own primal force to knock it down. Its like shedding old skin, a death of your old self, developing into something new. It was her own inner transformation.
Birth - growth -maturing - death - rest - birth etc.
The clip depicts the cycle of life and with that the cycle of the story of the runes :)
Heilung depicts the stories of bronzeage / iron age europe. Much of it has gone lost but they give the surviving shards of this ancient culture a new and modern shape and sound :)

At the very end - when the grown woman and (essentially) her pet Musk Ox charge at one another...think of the whole song as us being one with nature and being a part of nature. When they run at one another...this is not a "battle"...this is a coming together and melding of human and nature. If you see the final shot of this video through those eyes, you can see where it makes sense in context.

You dont need to apologize for not interrupting in the video. I think its a common missunderstanding in the "reacting" community to immediatly analyze something while it is playing.
It is enough to see your genuine reaction towards something without the analyzing mind to really let the music speak for itself first.
After its done one can give the general thoughts about it, which you did.
So i would say, this is exactly how a reaction is done.

My understanding is that Heilung isn't based on any specific peoples but hearkens back to the early Germanic tribes. The music is supposed to inspire and build on the music of our Germanic/Nordic ancestors, and takes inspiration from various texts and artifacts. It's less about the true history, and more about imagining history if that makes sense. It evokes emotion!

Here in the Finnish Laplands there are legends of Landaevittir (Land Warriors) many of them were women. They wore animals horns and bones. Landevittir scared many away but they considered themselves protectors of the Earth.

not sure if anyone has mentioned this, the origin for the lyrics of this song come from "bracteates", early germanic iron age (5th-7th century AD) golden coins that were worn as jewelry. According to the band, they picked one that had an inscription that was indecipherable aside from one word "Landawariar" meaning "Guardian of the Land" (roughly). Maria envisioned the rest of the story for this song based on those runes.

Never heard of Heilung until now. They sound like a great group to listen too. Watching their video, at first the antler imagery reminded me of the Celtic god Cernunnos, as the video progressed the language kind of sounded like Finnish to me, then the shamanic imagery made me think of the Sami people of Lapland. It was not until I saw the runes at the end that I realized it was Norse oriented. Then you mentioned the band was possibly telling a story from Germanic roots corrected my earlier thoughts. The video was great, I loved it. Thanks for showing it.

ANOANA TRANSLATION/ Being a practising Pagan all my life Heilung and wardrunda speaks to my soul.
Ashill's realm, power has been inherited; high power
Riches are divided, over the land of fires
Ashill's realm, power has been lost; ancestral lordship
Riches are divided, over the land of fires

Powerful lands, over the land of fires
The great land of power, over the land of fires
Powerful lands, over the land of fires
The great land of power, over the land of fires

On horseback, over the land of waters
    On horseback, over the seas
Sun's ray, over the sky's cloud
Sky's great light, over the Earth's expanse
Heaven's high hall, raised on a hill
    God's abode, never to crumble

    At night, a river flows
    A powerful day
    comes after night
Sun's fiery wheel brighter than the stars
    All night, the day's light
    In the east
    the sun shines
    Before the day's end
And at noon, in the west
    The sun sets down

Ashill's realm, power has been inherited; high power
Riches are divided, over the land of fires
Ashill's realm, power has been lost; ancestral lordship
Riches are divided, over the land of fires

What healed me was Heilung, liten to them while going through the dark forest was amazing.
And I'm not the only one. Heilung means healing, and for me that was true.
Heilung sorta healed me, and without them I wouldn't be here, I owe them my life.

Life changing advice! Take your best headphones, play this track on repeat and go for a walk in nature. Best time to do, is sunset in the summer, when most other people sit in front of their TV's and nature comes back to life. Did this every evening last summer and always had a great experience and it's perfect to calm down at the end of the day! ✌🏻

The music is about lyrics written in coins from the roman time that nobody knows the meaning... except from one part that means "protector of the land"... this was said by Maria Franz, vocalist of the group. Then, my interpretation of the song is that it tells the history of a child who was born to be the protector of the land, and his final act is a sacrifice from her to sustain the land...

You can interpret the runes to words because thats what we understand but the runes dont represent words they represent sounds. This group is no accident...despite what they may say in interviews. They have a deep understanding of esoteric and occult knowledge. Bringing that knowledge to the masses is beautiful...why their music resonates with millions.
