I appreciate your forward comments. I own many ROM-based units from “The Big 3”. I would agree with you that it would be a huge leap forward to have the MPC include a built-in library of ROM sounds in addition to the RAM storage they currently have.
Articulate and intelligent presentation - well done. You have to remember that the price for the Key 37 is very low. It cannot include everything at this price. There is no magic.
ROM = Read Only Memory
RAM = Random Access Memory
When you really think about the names they’re exactly that in operation.
MPC pulls stuff from storage and puts it into ram. Also usually now they have a micro sd for storage on the motherboard that the OS and stock sounds are saved on.
Integra 7 pulls from rom iso on storage. Same thing like MPC. That sd card slot is on the board. Puts sounds from that iso into ram. Read about all this.
ROM is read only memory, the sounds are permanently burnt on the chip, ram is random access memory, the sounds are placed temporarily on the chip as long as there is electricity going to the chip. In other words when you shut off the machine, you lose the sounds.. when your sounds are stored on rom they are instantly available, that's why you can switch from sound to sound without hesitation between the sounds, seamless transitions from sound to sound, the montage and the Rolland Phantom are geared for live performance, the AKai MPC's are geared towards production and sampling. The sequencer on the Akai MPC's are light years ahead of what you get on the montage and phantom. That's pretty much the difference between the systems you are talking about..
I ordered one this morning. It will go along with my MPC X SE. To me it is well designed. I applaud Akai Pro for not trying to make it be everyone to everyone. It has a specific purpose and focus.

Good info. I'm not really versed in tech spec knowledge so I never looked at it from this perspective. Makes a lot of sense. I too wish moving between presets was like a workstation. The load times feels like a bit of an interruption for your creativity. But for now, it is still much faster than loading a large keygroup. I'm looking at it from a glass half full perspective. That being said, I'm waiting on my 37 right now.

I don’t like the color. The price is fine at $899. The ram is a miss point and the fact that it doesn’t have a battery. I do like the fact it has 32gb internal storage of which 22gb is available for your use. That means it can house all the plugins internally. Weighs 9lbs and the MPC Live 2 is 7.5lbs so it’s not too heavy. I personally would have preferred the mini keys to make the unit more portable.
I agree with you, I wanted it to be more like a workstation keyboard. It’s not even like the MPC Key which comes with the premium sounds preloaded. It’s just an MPC One+ with a keyboard attached which is disappointing.
Another thing that is annoying is that the people demonstrating the keyboard are using their acquired sounds and plugins in their demos, including stem separation, which isn’t even out yet. The Key37 doesn’t come with that out of the box. People are going to be misled and be really disappointed when they get the keyboard.
I was hoping this was going to be the workstation I’ve been looking for, but it seems that I will need to find a used workstation for composition and songwriting.
I agree that the Akai MPC Key 61 is different than a traditional ROMpler workstation. It reminds more of a modern day Roland W-30 and Ensoniq ASR-10, which is exactly what I wanted. In use with my Kawai MP7SE, Korg Nautilus 61, Roland Fantom-06, and Yamaha MODX6+, the Akai MPC Key 61 has been the perfect addition to my R&B studio setup.
I really look ag this now as an extension of my mpc work flow where the main mpc handles one thing and the 37 handles the midi and anything extra that the main cpu can’t in trading off of sampling into it from the 37

Ding ding ding! ✅ You hit it right on the head! Even my 2000XL had like 8mb of ROM back then. That’s the area where they are lacking (in the ROM space). Ok, so it’s hybrid (standalone x controller)….cool….but imagine if you could pull up those plugins (fabric xl etc…) in “standalone mode!” You could if you had ROM! So the MPC Keys are almost there in workstation territory….but they have one more step to go (ROM). Imagine in standalone mode you could pull up 3rd party plugins (Roland > Korg > Spectrasonics > NI)….then the MPC KEY would be the ONLY weapon that you’d need! With all that being said…I still want one lol. I would love for them to make 2-88 key versions of hammer action & waterfall action 😍! Akai is on the right track tho….from the MPK49 days to an MPC Key….they’re building on a great platform…..and the software is the BIG TICKET! From 1.0 w/the REN/Studio to now…they’ve done something special imo. I’m also excited about Stems! I think when they get to 3.0….they’ll be crowned king 👑 (software wise)…..I just hope the hybrid hardware is up to par (ROM) when that takes place in the near future! ✌🏾

same, i do g-funk and i use a lot of synths. No new mpc for me until they go to minimum 8 gb ram and you can effortlessly put at least 16 vsts with memory going nuts
the Yamaha Motif had less then 100 MB of ROM built in; but those instruments sounded great; and am sure the same is true of those fantoms, jv1080s and Tritons. So having a big ROM size is not the be all and end all, I hope to see Akai add more Romplers to the Akai ecosystem as we have enuff subtractive synths now.

12 years ago I bought a car with 30k miles for 1300 $ I cant understand how this has no Battery and only 2gb Ram in 2024 for 900$.. .. yes my car was cheap but it worked great TOYOTA
ROM - read only memory. It cannot be updated or fixed if there is a bug in it. It is generally only good for things like gaming cartridges.
I totally agree with the feeling that these MPCkeys aren’t actually workstations compared to the big3 we’re used to. Anyhow, outside of the Red color, I like the MPCKeys…even though I don’t have a need for either of them. Mainly because (as of yet) none of their products are interconnecting like Maschine and komplete Kontrol devices do. So there’s no real benefits for me, especially since I already have an X, a Kronos, and multiple samplers, synthesizers, and plugins. And I also agree that the Key37 is better for the newbie who wants the latest all-in-one type of MPC in my opinion!
I was hoping for 4GB at the very least but I realized they'd be shooting themselves in the foot because the Live 2, with all its extra features only has 2GB and it's $500 more expensive
A lot of people called the montage and the Phantom workstations. Yes you can work on them but you can do a lot more work on an MPC, when it comes to producing a song, a beat or whatever you wanna call it, so basically the phantom and the montage are what I would consider workstation light weights, and the MPC's are workstation heavyweights.
I'll stay with my key61 but I'm sure after people have bought the 37 they will come out with a black or retro color se withb4 gigs of ram lol..I wish akai would add 16 tracks like ALL other workstations and make it where you can preview patches and instantly load the sounds I like my mpc 61 but so many things could be improved like adding snap to tempo and timestretching like serato but anyways lol

How much is the Montage again?
AKAI downgraded the ram to keep the price down then they will eventually release an ALL Black or Retro colorway with 4gb or 8gb of RAM to reel in rest of the buyers. I almost feel like this release they have is a test market sadly. The sd card is a plus though. But the unit isnt for me as a consumer overall.

There is no excuse for any maker of equipment to downgrade any type of ram or rom, This is all corporate focusing on how much money can we get from the consumer. Being a technician for 25 years now, I watch companies like apple take the name add 1 small feature to a newer product and call it the next be thing , then by a update eliminate the use of your product that you just purchase. Akai just seen the chance and took it, knowing that ram and rom are very cheap to produce an slap on boards. As we speak M.2 storage should be implemented in any mpc even if its a empty slot. 2GB of Ram just don't cut it for vst or sample roms. cellphones now go up to 16GB ram. Its all the same when it comes to devices. Yes, a 20 year old workstation should not be able to access rom data faster than a current product but if a company can get away with it they will. Once Akai hit those numbers , A new device will come out called they Ultimate MPC X 61 , calling it the anniversary workstation with all the bells and whistles.

if they make it like a montage or Kronos, most people will not be able to afford it. I have a Kronos ex that cost me $3000 when I first got it and I don’t think technology should be that expensive anymore especially for the fact that they make so many of them that every year there’s like a new thing they will lose out very much if they do that.

I would really like to get one but I already have the key 61 and the X SE. I'm kind of cheap and I don't like having more gear than I can use, so I guess I'll have to pass on this one, but for anybody thinking about getting into this MPC music production this is the one to get because it's not that expensive and it does everything the SE and the 61 can do with some obvious limitations, because of the size of the keyboard and the ram situation, it being two gig instead of four, the SE and the X have a 10" touchscreen witches much better than a 7", especially if you have sausage fingers, the 7" can be a bit of a challenge.
Its $899 plus tax Im not mad at the price 🏷️ like you i wish we has more flexibility with standalone 8 plugins aren’t enough! 🥲
