Nezukos box is made of a much lighter wood (as it needed to be carried by tanjiro) and in the demon slayer world, the type of breathing they use increases their strength by the minute. The type of physics that apply to humans in this world, do not apply in demon slayer.

As someone that handles European swords regularly, no greatswords CANNOT pierce plate armor

Yeah, that’s not even just considering the fact that you’re literally hitting a piece of metal against a piece of metal.
The way the plates on the armor curve, it’s made to deflect blows. More than likely even if you took a decent thrust at a breast plate it would probably glance off…
We even see this in the Napoleonic period when they used much thicker breast plates to stop musket fire. Yes, some of them did get direct hits, and there are dents in the armor, and some even have holes from where the musket ball hit. However, in a lot of museum pieces, you can see hits that are clearly glancing blows due to the curvature of the armor. No matter, if that is deflecting, a musketball or sword thrust.

sanemi's sword was made out of ores not steal and sanemi is also one of the strongest hashiras too (in the manga he was able to fight an upper moon and still live)

we dont know what it was made out of, traditionally you see after final selection they choose an ore which is melted down to a metal, however when they become a hashira they might get a more specialised sword, cuz i doubt mitsuri had that (quite unrealistic but not the point) bend whip sword since final selection, so its possible sanemi's sword was also subjected to some special treatment that is not as visible. (i haven't read the manga, so if i say something that is proven wrong in those i wouldn't know)

The answer is both: Sanemi is constantly using total concentration breathing, that means he have more strength than a normal human, and also nezuko box it's light, that means less dense
Going with the blade parallel to the grain of the wood might be easier if it’s not layered boards . Some katanas feature a beveled tip for piercing

There are actually a lot of factors on if the katana will pierce through the box. What’s it made out of? What the sword made of? How hard are you slashing? How thick is the wood? A lot of factors

You DO realize that the people in demon slayer have to train to be way stronger to cut through anything right? They even had to cut through a BOLDER to get in to the final selection. He is a Hashira meaning he was WAY stronger than Tanjiro at that point. So he IS really strong.

one thing you gotta remember is urokodaki said he used a really light wood, meaning its less dense and might be easier to cut through
Tanjiro has to carry that thing on his back, so probably a little bit less dense on the wood. And katanas are piecing weapons, the samurais were not "slicing" through the other samurais armor they would stab between the plates, and then drag the blade out. Its a stab and slash weapon. Also might have helped if you had something heavy in the box to keep it from moving. Also, i dont think that katana was properly sharpened. Idk if any of you have accidentally dropped a katana on a hardwood floor before, but just gravity is enough for it to have stuck in my hardwood floor about half an inch. Had he put his entire body weight behind that downward thrust, and leaned more toward the edge and not the back of the blade it would have gone through.

There's not special about katana mechanically for cutting hard-to-cut things like plastic, wood, metal, rubber, etc. I know this is a click-baity video but it should be fairly obvious to most people the answer is "no" unless they were sufficiently thin. Against flesh and bone however, katana do its job exceedingly well.
"Greatswords" you mentioned are actually longsword (although not explicitly differentiated in period) and against armor, it's usually aimed at the gaps between armor pieces rather than pierce through. Reason being you need something beefy and rigid to pierce through so energy isn't dissipated through buckling of the blade like a longsword would. Rondel, which are basically icepick dagger, are great for this. See Tod's Workshop's video on this:

In the "slicing" trial, the dude didn't even slice he just struck the box with the sharp edge. That's not slicing

Normal demon slayers are said to fight on par with normal demons and had to slice through a literal boulder without the use of breathing (aka katana magic) just to enter final selection.
My point is yes, Sanemi is unusual jacked
