- I make a pair of Power Converters, just like the ones Luke Skywalker might have picked up from Tosche Station.
In a friendly competition, Shawn from Try To Finish Something also made one, and he came by to show me his techniques for weathering props!

"I put WAY too much thought into it!"
Well, Adam Savage, who actually WORKED on the movies(though not the first three) recently said that, if he doesn't have a narrative, if nothing else an internal narrative, it doesn't work. It has to have a story. So, all that means is, you're both proper prop-makers!
Odin, seeing your spare parts box makes me feel WAY less self-conscious about the five or six 40 gallon Rubbermaid tubs of "project parts" in my closet now. Now I just need some time, energy, and money to actually make something out of all that junk...
1. Who cares what people think of your storage of “extra parts”. Some call it hoarding, some call it saving.
2. You can make the time, energy and money for your projects. Though, the parts you have shouldn’t really require money to assemble, if you actually have as much as you say you do. Maybe some glue or whatever but that’s negligible.
@@Saif-zf9vb Well, when it exceeds six large Rubbermaid tubs, it's getting into hoarding territory, which is why I had to clean out a bit. The problem is that all the parts I currently have are what are known in the business as "greebles"--interesting little bits and pieces to be glued onto bigger stuff. In order to use them, I need raw materials such as craft foam or bass wood, all of which require money which is in short supply for me right now, since I'm working on moving to a better apartment and paying off some decent-sized bills as fast as I can. It doesn't help that I'm on a fixed income due to being disabled and having grand ideas and no place to work on them at the moment, but hopefully once I get moved that won't be a problem any more...
At least your power converters will smell minty fresh
Awesome build Odin! Love the scratch build converters! Awesome that you had Shawn on as well. Bravo guys!
Thanks! They were fun to do. I have known Shawn for years, I am glad we got on the same video at last.
Agree!
Where’s your power converter build Brian? 😉
I would love to see Brian's take as well!
This was a ton of fun Odin! Thanks as always!!
Well, gentlemen... there I was watching one of my favorite shows with two of my good friend Odin and Shawn, sitting back with a cuppa tea and BAM a challenge throwdown!! You got it, I'm in! (Awesome builds guys as always)
Excellent! Can't wait!
Can't wait!!
Great work as usual, Odin & Shawn!
Thank you Van Oaks!
Thanks Derek! Odin is awesome and it was fun to join him!!
I like the projects where you go off the beaten path and create something that is inspired by something. Shows off your great creative mind that you own.
I love how different yet similar all our processes are
Nice one Odin, I remember watching extras on Star Wars DVDs about how they built the props....just junk and lots and lots of very strong glue!
For Star Wars there was a ton of aluminum aircraft parts all over the place, because the junk used for sets and props was purchased by weight!
I personally love these, I want to build something like this next, I think it would be cool to wire it to be a charging port for my phone, and watch.
It's kind of bad most of us don't have the patience to wait for "Instant" superglue to set. Loved all three power converters and I love seeing kit-bashed stuff. And I now feel less self-conscious about my own "extra parts" bin. Thanks, Odin and Shawn!
This is amazing...I really like the weathering! 😎 Well done!
I agree! The weathering is awesome!
Excellent prop build and video, Odin!! It was great seeing my buddy Shawn also!
The blue one reminds me of the light on top of the Tardis.
This was one of my favorite builds. Excellent work. You should try next...The Sith Way Finder from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It would be hard to build because it's small, has green translucent glass with a little red light inside, and very wethered.
All of this is pretty cool! Makes it easier when you have endless resources. SIGH
I have that exact Star Wars 1977 shirt! Sweet!
Wooooow a Collab? So amazing! 🤩 Thank you guys! Such a pleasure to watch you work!
Hello Petr!
Thank you Petr!
I recognize the main body of Shawn's prop all too well. I was a RTO (Radio Telephone Operator) when I was deployed in Iraq, and that is from a military loud speaker.
Those props look great, I love the lighting effects you added they look really good and help sell the story.
“We all have a box of stuff- a spare parts bin!”
You mean my whole room? It’s barely contained chaos in there.
These are super cool! I love that they LOOK like they do a thing, even though I have no idea what exactly a "power converter" does. I've never built a prop, but I've built models and I love weathering those, so these are some great new techniques I'll be looking for an excuse to use!
This is the kind of build I love seeing. Dont get me wrong your builds are amazing. Just love this shows you can use scraps to make things that are not planed out. LOVE IT!!!!!!
I know I'm going to be excommunicated for this but I've never been a fan of Star Wars, but they looked really cool.
Finally got to go back and finish this video. These props look so cool! The toothpaste method was also super effective and I’m so glad you showed us, it’s just genius
I love this kind of crap- /spare-parts mishmas assembly.
They both look great.
I think it was on _Face Off_ that one of the judges said that "every ting on a prop should look like it has a real function / purpose, even if you dont know or understand what that is" , and I think thats a pretty good rule. 🙂
Ron Cobb, production designer for little films like Blade Runner, Alien, Abyss... He says the same thing. Things need to look like they do something, not just a box stuck on a box.
This was great to see two of my favorite maker channels team up to make something awesome.
I have a suggestion as an alternate technique for your oils - try mixing it with white spirits and watch it really fill in your panel lines. Also if you make it a little thicker with the oil paint and paint it all over and let it dry you can take some white spirits on a make up sponge or Qtip (wipe most of the spirits off on a clean paper towel) and you can clean off the oils - leaving an interesting filter of the used color over the piece - we use it a ton in Wargame models these days and it’s great
ODIN MAKES : Star Wars Power Converters From Tosche station with bits n bobs and what nots
Nailed it!
0:22 Hey, Sean, look at the camera. No, that’s not what you’re supposed to be looking at. No, not there. Hey, over here! Sean, Over here! Look at the camera, dammit! lol 😆
This is probably one of my favorites.
Really awesome build this is something I never thought about trying to make it’s definitely on my list now
Ha ha I picked up that grey round plastic thing up today off the floor on the building site I was on, I thought that will come in handy when building a diorama, I also have a box of bits, great job😁
Power Converters were the must have action figure toy in the system that year. Based on the Power Converters hologram cartoons
Awesome build by both of you.
Great video Odin! Would love to see some more 'Kit bashing' type builds!
I hope you do more of these.very creative
Awesome video again they look great nice job!! 👍
Now I need to rumage through my boxes and make my version to.
Also with some toothpaste as that is my go to masking medium for stuff anyway. I like to make the rust before toothpaste though, just paint it all metal, and then paint rust colours on that, then (important) clear coat it with a good hard gloss clear coat to protect the metal/rust.
That green box that Shawn built is a Loud Speaker for the SINCGARS radio the military uses. I know because I was in tactical communications for 10yrs in the Army.
You make the coolest stuff!
The scratch builds are my favorite! Please do more!
This is great! Like the things that Rebel Base Build puts together, seemingly random pieces that end up as something with a ‘story’ that you could really see ILM doing.👏🏻
(I’m looking through spares & offcuts for a job of my own so I can relate)
So very cool
i would love to see more builds like this.
As you start weathering, my first thought was that they are new so they wouldn't be weathered. Then a second later, this is on Tatooine. They would be rebuilt and modified with what was available.
These are really good and I could see them in the star wars universe . Amazing how all these parts can come together to make a prop.
Thank you Mike!
Very cool builds. I think they came out awesome! The glowing effect of that xmas box was just waiting to be put in that power converter wasnt it? lol
Oh and btw I just heard a story about a big guy in a baby outfit and diaper.....MUCH RESPECT!!
I’ve had good luck doing the same thing with a clay slurry. Works just like the toothpaste
cool video, I really like your builds
That was great and I really like how they all turned out! I like your choice of where to put lighting effects work way better than I expected for how few lights and how cheap they are. Great work!
I too hope you do more found-object stuff like this. It's cool to see you make something we know and love but this was really interesting and hearing how you come up with what you're doing and hearing how you both do things was cool!
Thank you so much!
Awesome build, looks like you captured the Star Wars aesthetic pretty well with your random assemblage of parts. The pulsing effect on the blue converter is a really cool touch too.
I have a request. Could you do the Tsubaki Mk III from No More Heroes? I wanted to try making it myself at the beginning of 2020, but I couldn't find parts that looked like what I wanted from my local hardware store, and then the country went into lockdown and it just fizzled out. It's basically a lightsaber shaped like a katana with a really slick looking handle.
Isn’t it crazy that we actually got to see the tashi station in this weeks episode and he coincidentally made the power converters
Yes it was! I was super excited. Both Camie and Fixer had their names in the end credits!
I have a question? How are you so.... you? 😂
You build Marvel, Star Wars, Video Game, and bunches of other antiques, and you still haven’t cracked, lol! Not only that, but you’re a wonderful guy! Keep it up man, always good seeing these! 👍
thank you Liam!
These look great!! Its my opinion that Star Wars props are primarily made from stuff that is pre-80's. Original Star Wars was made up of stuff from the 80's and so, that particular era of scrap and tech seems to be best for making Star Wars props. In my own opinion.
Hey Odin, maybe instead of a prop remake into a thing you plug in the wall and it lights up and there are places to charge cell phones in the shop.🤔 it really looks awesome
Seve genial, me impresionó mucho los instrumentos que sé utilizaron.
I know the hype has died down a bit for both films but I can’t wait for you to make your ghost trap and I hope you eventually make The Green Goblins Mask from Spider-Man (2002)
Looks good. It looks like what would be found, at a place like wato's shop, except alot cleaner and not damaged. I would like to see, what would happen if he found an old nerf gun. Looks like a nerf gun, that no longer works, could be turned into a blaster, like the one from Halo. The blaster, would be the first one used in game. I believe it was orange.
Fun fact the place boba visits in episode 2 when he attacks the bikers, is actually Tosche Station
If you have a big enough space inside, you could make them into cell phone power banks.
There's a couple of Stargate ZPMs out there like that.
I will for sure have to try that toothpaste thing. I saw another maker use liquid latex to achieve a similar effect, but toothpaste is much cheaper.
Very nice. The plastic that is hard to glue, use fire/heat to temper and it will be better.
Interesting!
You should make an eye patch like Odin has/had!
Amazing work, as usual! 😁 I would have made the wooden rings copper coils, but that's the best part...I can make my own power converters! See ya at Toshi Station! 😆
see you at that Station!
most epic build brother .... in my head while watching i was saying please use some white LED strips that change motion inside the tubes because they would look epic , kinda of reminds me of some ole christmas string lights i use to have that had like 9 functions ( used them for christmas and used them for Djing back in the day )
Try spray varnish on item that don’t take paint or glue easily.
those look great, and not a 3D printer in sight.
The parts box(es) - my wife calls it junk, but I call it “resources”!
there is a picture in legends showing what power converters are supposed to look like
That Boba Fett helmet looks rough , the chipping looks like camo pattern. Cool technique just overly applied
It's the post-sarlacc version that is almost all silver. I had a ton of reference and kept thinking the same thing you were thinking!!
You should make the ghostface knife. The Buck 120.
curious if you have tried E6000 for the plastic that won't glue? Takes a while to dry but I haven't found anything yet that it won't glue. These are turning out amazing!
I thought that the Power Converters were exotic dancers...according to Robot Chicken anyway.
I would never argue with Robot Chicken!
I know the spare parts bin there are so many screws nuts and bolts a few electronic components and many other things.
This is so cool!!! I’ve always wondered about those Power Converters looked like. In my mind the were long cylinder like things with male and female plug ends with lights flashing and tied together with old brown rope. I don’t know why I imagined the rope but I do.
You should build it, post it somewhere in social media and tag us. Shawn and I will see it!
you should make the golden egg from harry potter
I would love to see cicadas mask from the flash tv show
Odin love the content bro and I know you’re a Dragon Ball fan like me and I’m aware you’ve don’t TRILLIONS of Swords on this channel my request
Build Future Trunks’ Brave Sword from Dragon Ball Z
What would be really cool is that if you made jet jaguar's Spear from Godzilla Singular Point
Ugh totally have that box of junk in my garage (more like 6 of them). Maybe these videos popping up is telling me I should do something with them.
I know you guys are all about found stuff. You can though get a bit more mechanical/electrical feel, as well as a practical way to power and control your props, by using "cannon plugs". They are quite common to see in the SW movies as they are used on military vehicles, in particular aircraft. Since they are still in use today and not some rare thing from the 60's, they can be had for fairly cheap. Just pay attention to the power ratings on them as some are only meant for low voltage control/data signals.
Am i the only one who laughed when Odin emptied the parts box out and thing starred falling on the floor and flying out everywhere....?
I wouldn't necessarily call it a "spare parts bin" more like a spare parts everywhere type situation
he he he
Can you try making sung jinwoo's daggers from solo leveling?
You oughta send these to Mark Hamill.
You should make a scream mask next due too the new movie coming out next week
Look great. Where can we find sticker sheets like that?
You should build the pke meter/shocker from ghostbusters afterlife
Have you tried plastic annealing to get the super glue to stick? Boylei hobby time and myself have had success with it.
Im going to share the picture on Facebook
The green one looks kind of like an astromech head.
Can you make Executioner's Blade (Kubikiribocho) the sword that Zabuza uses from Naruto.
Please make a Din Jarin blaster pistol
i definitely have a box of random parts. im a nerf modder who doesnt like throwing out any parts even if a nerf gun breaks
Can you please make Bondrewd's tail from made in abyss
😀
Do you think you can try to make a heat lamp from Star wars and try to make it actually heat up
Make angora rots eye and karlson's katana
Sword of Aeons: Fable the Lost Chapters
Odin you should makes demomans eye lander from tf2
How about i put you up to a challenge make the dark ones dagger from ONCE UPON A TIME make it better then mine
