  • We are capping this PE2023 series with a post-results analysis episode with someone we never expected to have on the show but are deeply honoured to host: Professor Tommy Koh. He is a Special Adviser at the Institute of Policy Studies at the National University of Singapore. He is also a diplomat, lawyer, professor and author who served as Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations between 1968 and 1971.
In this episode, we pick Prof Koh’s brain on Mr. Tharman’s landslide victory, including the various reasons that led to the unexpectedly wide victory margin. We will also discuss what the future of Singapore with Mr. Tharman as President can look like.

I am happy to hear Prof Koh pointing out the unwritten diplomatic role of our President.
As the Head of State, Mr Tharman with his tremendous linkages and experience, is an asset to Singapore; priceless and peerless. He is therefore, well suited to represented Singapore in the world stage, I cannot emphasise this enough. I wish Mr Tharman every success as the President of the Republic of Singapore!
Having said the above, I do not undermine Prof Koh's other insights, whose views are always valuable and highly regarded by me.

how is that "unwritten"? that diplomatic role has always been well-known. the real "unwritten" role is the soft power to influence decision-making at the highest levels imo.

Yesss. But I actually don't really care (😅) that she is half-Chinese (actually my friends asked me "you ok with a Japanese first lady ah?" And I said "huh never thought abt this till you asked me") and Teochew (🙃), but I loved that she has interests in art, poetry, that Mr and Mrs T had the same vibe (😬), loved that they were truly .. in it *TOGETHER* (even though her first interview abt how she has the last word/"will run for presidency and you still get to do 'all your thing' " came off not very in their favour at first)
But I mean like when Mothership (😬) did the closing of the campaign trail, the pic of the Tharmans sharing a coconut (not 🍍 lol), really had the "this was long and hard, but I'm glad we did it .. together" reverberating all over. I didn't see the "I'm glad we did it ... together" from the other 2 candidates' other halves 🙃

Host Joel Lim, you did well. Prof Koh was and is the same person, with diplomatic polish. EP Tharman must surely deliver based on the population understanding of his capability and his neutrality as most favoured EP. The People Association must come under EP purview to meet the unity and social cohesion agenda. Many had and will ask PA sincerity to serve the population at large without political partisan role. No doubt, Budget deficits are a no no but equally, Budget surplus is not governmental purpose to strive for. The National Reserves guesstimate is not useful and yet of concern for national security in fuller disclosure. I wouldn't tear my hair over finance semantics. Otherwise, a good job done by Joel!

I didn't watch the Eugene Tan one but YA MAN first time actually hearing Tommy Koh speak and I love what I'm hearing (I'm only 13mins in) - absolutely right. Haha on TKL he's like "I think the endorsement by TCB and TJS was counterproductive" - spot on good Sir, that was the moment I decided I was never gonna vote for TKL. Dudeee.
"You cannot judge a person's future performance on the basis of his past affliations" - love this. I hope this plays out well!
I'm at the 13min+ mark when he's talking about the Chinese guy who only vote for a Chinese candidate - "the percentage of 'Chinese chauvinists' .. is very small! Race is never irrelevant .. but PE23 shows us that race is not decisive" -- more eloquently than I could ever have put it hahaha but 💯 love this I agree.

13:05 Quote from Prof Tommy Koh: “Race is never irrelevant, but PE2023 shows us that race is not decisive, it is the MERIT of the candidate that is decisive.” Indeed, the electorate shows maturity and wisdom by giving their vote to the best candidate, overlooking his race. Tharman has lots of merit: integrity, character, stellar leadership, ministerial performance, global outlook & experience, and of course, his dignified wife Jane Ittogi.

Most of us had have forgotten half of the voters are female, and Jane performed so well to mitigate Tharman trailing PAP shadow side effect. Tan Cheng Bock is pretty dumb to get involved in this PE even as personal capacity, his party should walk and comb the ground again and again in West Side of Sg. Alas, next GE will be tough for the ruling party, how they found someone like Tharman that really hold the ground well, and not always condescending with full of air.

I agree that Tharman's popularity transcends race, but it was also obvious how much effort he puts in to increase his "Chineseness" in his campaigning:
    1. Use of chinese's liking of "Ong Lai"
    2. Demo of liking of Chinese culture through calligraphy.
    3. Having his Japanese-chinese wife flaunts her teochewness.
My point is while I agree that Race card is no longer decisive, we must not believe that the electorate is race-blind. Tharman's efforts to enhance his Chineseness tell us a lot.

Haha actually (as a Chinese) I felt it was a bit too try-hard lol. Even at a point where I asked myself, does he not care about his own ethnic group? (and yes I'm aware he's of Sri Lankan Tamil ancestry but for simplicity sake ok .. lol)
Anyway, for me I'll say I voted for Tharman cos (1) familiarity gave him the edge of course but (2) personally I was sold by the TDK interview where he showcased his portfolio as education minister very extensively and the impacts of those policies and decisions. In part also have the TDK podcast hosts to thank for asking good questions so that the convo could develop in a helpful manner. It was, to me, the best interview where the candidate was steered to be able to share their achievements and 'sell' themselves by elaborating on their KPI and such.
Most importantly, I envisioned who I wanted to see at eg. William's coronation if Charles really decides to abdicate haha. Not that I care that much abt the monarchy but more like I asked myself, who would I be most confident of representing SG abroad, that would make me proud to be a Singaporean.
That being said, I'm gen Y and I know people in both gen Y and boomer generations who voted for NKS!

Actually, it wasn't so much of a surprise. 60++% of Singaporeans support the PAP government. So, a small percentage of those who support the opposition shifted to support President Tharman, that's added up to the 70.4%.

Oh. All the merit labelling that’s why seemingly high percentage I see.
What is voting percentage? Those who showed up and voted, or of all voting age Singaporeans’?
Does voting percentage include or excludes, those who didn’t bother to show up?
Does it include upon total, those who didn’t bother to “chop” on Any candidates(null vote)?
Anyone knows the true figures? Curious as I didn’t bother to be Involved.

The analysts presume that those who voted for Tharman did so because he was the best candidate. But it’s quite possible that a significant number chose him because he’s associated with PAP and is the most familiar face. I also saw many posting that they would never vote for NKS because he must have bad morals since his fiancé is much younger and they do not wish for his and Sybil Lau’s portraits in public institutions. These people may be a minority but I don’t think their numbers are insignificant.

For many professionals, the race thing is a function of ceca. It has been a very disturbing FTA that changed the professional labour landscape. And many people aren't sure what the actual benefits have been.

    • @user-18r9es7tt3
      @user-18r9es7tt3 Před 8 měsíci +1

The benefits and fairness of CECA is indeed questionable, and we worry for our younger generations job prospects. Disappointingly no Minister or MP dare to call for a thorough debate or review of the benefits vs losses resulting from CECA FTA. We are also worried about the massive losses incurred in investments in India.

All the good words. Very normal. Stereotype. Yes, he is capable. Before the election, he still have current followers derived from his position and the continuous acknowledgement in the Singapore arena. May i propose to be fair to other candidates in the presidential election that any government political personnel holding ministerial position, who have the intention to run for the president position, to remove themselves from those position at least 5 years in advance. That will seem more fair to the other candidates.

Yes, the voters are wise in choosing Tharman. Having said that, it is because the opposition TKL is not a strong candidate. He is known as a spoiler in the 2011 election. Still, he is able to increase his votes from 4.8% to 13.8% a 2.8 times increase. Imagine if Tan Cheng Bok were to be fielded a 2.8 times increase of his 32% in 2011 PE. The electorate wanted an opposition but at the same time a good capable president. If TCB or TJS were to be the opposition candidate, Tharman win would not be 70%, probably marginal.
Not many Singaporeans know that Tharman is well known internationally except maybe a small minority of atas aristocrats

Over 75% of overseas voters have voted for Tharman while less than 8% voted for Tan Kin Lian despite having support from guys like Dr Tan Cheng Bock, Lee Hsien Yang, Dr Chee, and others. As Professor Tommy Koh said, the 70% margin was shocking but not unexpected and this also goes to show that the vast majority of Singaporeans still demand high standards from politicians and presidential candidates and Singaporeans may also be fearful of politicians with ill intentions or hidden agenda may destroy the image and future of Singapore by promoting toxic politics and misinformation to confuse voters.

If the candidate was continuously serving the people and his constituency, he have the advantage of a number of supporters exist prior to the election. Hence the rule of eligible candidate should not be holding any political position for five years prior to the president election or submission of intention to stand for election. To be fair to the other candidate.
