It's funny all along he wanted a confrontation with Merrin & all the film was a build up to this. Pazuzu would be an unlikely entity for the demon that enters Reagan's body. So we're left with the question what is it? "Our name is Legion for we are many"
A wild guess would produce something like 'Azaleas' or 'Azazel' the demon of the wilderness.
Pazuzu was an ancient deity of protection.
It was never a demon in fact it was invoked to protect the people from demons for centuries.
It was only ever called a demon by the catholic church during their syncretism of the region where Pazuzu was worshipped.
In the Abrahamic religions, one man's god is another man's demon. When the ancient Romans conquered ancient Egypt, they didn't tell the Egyptians to worship Jupiter or abandon the Kemetic gods, only people in the Abrahamic religions do that. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam has a long history of demonizing other entities.

Pazuzu comes from the mind of H.P. Lovecraft, who also wrote the Necronomicon. This book also has a detailed description about Pazuzu. This was LONG before the Exorcist was written.

Am I the only one to realise that the demon in the exorcist might not actually be Pazuzu? Captain Howdy and Pazuzu proper might be two different characters. Imagine yourself surfing the internet... and giving yourself a nick name or avatar, perhaps Pazuzu was just a name or avatar for entity or spirit which called itself Captain Howdy... sort of like hello world.
Just a note pazuzu is meant to protect kids and pregnant women from lamashtsu. Imagine these things, an entity takes over your body, which is your property, without your permission, and will it be honest with you? It will claim to be from Satan to Timbuktu to whatever it needs to do to steal whatever it needs to steal...
Christianity can be bullocks at times, especially in fiction.
In the documentary Leap of Faith...William Friedkin says the demon is Pazuzu. I promise I'm not trying to argue but Friedkin and Blatty both confirmed it is Pazuzu. There could be more to it but I have watched the movie multiple times and read the book a handful of times as well in addition to the director saying it was Pazuzu.
@chadmedeiros264 Yeah if the director of this work of fiction says so... then perhaps it is indeed the same Mesopotamian deity... but again, this entire idea that a minor deity worshipped to protect kids and pregnant women from foul winds... is going to call himself, of all things, captain Howdy... it is so... well, for a lack of a better term, marine and ocean associated. Old Mesopotamia did not did not have a prominent navy... just feel pazuzu has been badly maligned there... lamashtsu, on the other hand... should have been fair game. We whacked a 'good' extinct minor deity... because the artists didn't have the skill in Iraq to give his idols finesse and beauty...
