- DIY! How To Unclog Clear & Clean Any Refrigerator Rear Drain Line Tube!
Many people aren't aware that their fridge contains a drain hole or drain plug. This drain hole or drain plug is in place to catch the moisture which collects in a fridge, particularly that which builds upon the back wall of the fridge. If the drain hole or drain plug becomes blocked, this then causes problems for the rest of your refrigerator.
The defrost heater heats up, the frost on the evaporator coils liquefies, and the water drips off the coils into the trough. The water then drains through a hole in the trough where it travels down a hose to a drain pan located at the base of the refrigerator.
What happens if the fridge drain hole is blocked?
Under normal circumstances, this water runs down a drain hole and collects into a tray at the bottom of the appliance, close to the compressor. The heat from the compressor then usually evaporates the water inside the tray. However, if the drain hole is blocked, the water will collect inside the fridge.

It's 2am and I've just uncloged my fridge water drainage thanks to this video. Very therapeutic 😌. 2 wks on and it's still working 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Enjoy!
@@macdaddypimpping what is that stuff coming out of the hose?
I'm not a handy man whatsoever, but this video is very informative and well made. Thank you. You have just helped me earn points with my wife 🙏🏽
Great to hear!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! This video was the answer to our problem. Once we removed the drain tube water gushed out! Our clog was not in the tube BUT the small attached udder of the tube. Just like you said, clean it with a straw then we flushed it with hot water! Perfect! Now we'll subscribe. Thank you again macdaddypimpping!
I pray that this works. Cause I’m tired of smelling death in my home. Will be up early morning unclogging my fridge after learning how to tonight. Thanks so much!
I have a different fridge nevertheless applying the same methods or taking off the tube and running it through hot water did the trick. Read my comment and kindly give an up date or new suggestion. 😀👍
Same! Mine smells sweet.. sickly sweet. It’s grossing me out
This was helpful. It encouraged me to be brave enough to attack the drainage problem and I was successful.
You are very welcome.
@Don was there water at the bottom of your fridge before fixing the problem?
I followed everything in the video and now no more water on the floor. Thanks a lot, i appreciate your help.
Worked like a charm. The hose is fixed into place on mine but shoved straw in a presto. Thanks!!!
Excellent!
Thank you so much for this video. I was able to repair my frige because of it at no cost. Thanks again.
Glad it helped
Great(long) vid, but you can definitely streamline/condense it.
Thank you! We're back in business.
Wonderful!
I like that light
A long mini baby bottle brush may work too (they have skinny ones.)
Thanks for sharing.
FYI - they sell zip ties.
How about using a pipe cleaner or a straw cleaner instead of a straw? Think it would work better.
I suggested the same thing!
Use a flexible bottle brush.
Thanks that's my work for coming weekend 😊
Most welcome 😊
I can fine my
Cut the zip-tie off and put a new one on when done.
for what? It ain't going nowhere.
That’s what I said lol
How do you install the new zip tie?
exactly i could off damage the copper pipe weld and loose all the gas simply cut the zip tie lol
I cut the zip tie, nothing happened except freeing the drain pipe
Thank You for the information video, going to try this
Best of luck!
Great video, I'd recommend wearing shoes before pulling out the fridge
Great idea
Why is it that I can see frozen water coming through left side of freezer inside!! Is there a possible clog in the waterline that goes to ice maker??
You might want to check your defroster or the coil fan if it's working properly.
Is the clogged tube what’s causing the water leak or frost under the vegetable tray?
All was good but the damn zip-tie. You could have made it much simpler, if you were to cut off the existing zip-tie and retied it with a new zip tie. You didn’t have any spare ones did you? 😂 Or perhaps you thought there might be a microprocessor in the factory zip-tie? 🤪😜 That’s why you didn’t want to mess with it.
OMG CUT THE ZIP TIE! You lost me man, please stop messing around under there your gonna break it or hurt yourself.
Would this be the reason for me having water at the front of my fridge on a daily bases
Cut the zip tie already!!!
Loved it, saved me so money, thanks
Great to hear!
So many many thanks😊😊
Most welcome 😊
How do you unplug the refrigerator?
Buy a straw cleaner which would be longer than what you used. I clean my straws that are stainless steel for my cold yeti cups.
Does this work for a mini fridge?
If your fridge has a drain line then yes.
Nice video bro stay cool😎😎
eesh I’m not
Feeling well today the bad weather and heat
Amagine that the same happens with your house drain pipes but worse with grease and oils going down the drain. one reason to keep your house drains clean by enzyme cleaners once every 6 months or so
What we do when this drinage pipe broken please give me replay sir
Thank you for the video it’s 2:40 central time n I’m going to try to do that all my food is getting spoil. I got a French LG refrigerator I hope is the same process.
My fridge has a tube that's just straight down without that curve. What's the difference between having a curved tube vs straight tube?
As long as your fridge has a catch can for the drain then it should be fine.
You saved 5 cents zip ties.
Great video
Thanks 👍
😂😂
need a rigid wire with a cloth ball wrapped around the end, then just push it through like cleaning the barrel of a gun.
Thanks for sharing.
Do you mean a folded metal coat hanger with a cotton ball held in place with tape? You are genius!!!
As a retired ASE Master Auto Tech, cut the nylon wire tie, they cost $0.03 cents each. A wire tie from a bread sack or contractors bag. Not everyone has an air compressor but more likely to have a garden hose. I have old speedo cable flex shaft that would work.
Yes, he got the job done. Yes, this video will be seen by many who never owned tools, all plastic or wooden coat hangers but watch the incredible effort in cleaning the little “P-Trap” was brutal. Also, a small amount of water should be added before installing. This just keep the warm air from the condenser coil from going up the tube to the evaporator. This part get cold, a heater wire comes on via a timer once every 8hrs or so (Yours will Vary) but heat rises up the coils, melts frost/ice and it gathered into a tube that exists into a pan. The warm condenser air evaporates it so it does have to be emptied. Best of luck folks!
@@deankay4434i. Are you saying add some water BACK INTO the p-trap after cleaning it and reinstalling it? What if you don’t add water, is that bad? Possibility of something bad happening, or definitively happening? And then how to fix that new problem? Thank you.
Easy to cut zip tie and get another one.
This may be a dumb question, but where does the water normally go that drains from that tube?
It collects/drains into a plastic drain pan or cup that is near the fan. The fan causes the water to evaporate.
Bbn
Cut the damn zip tie!
Indeed. I believe that is a refrigerant line it is tied too. Break that line while screwing around, and you'll be buying a new fridge...
exactly, but a new zip lock is too damn expensive, they are 50 cents 4 a bag of 50 ies 😳😲☺️
What was the difference in performance after doing this, or were the any symptoms that needed attending to?
Refrigerators with automatic defrost have a drain tube that carries water from the defrost cycle to a fixed drain pan under the refrigerator. The usual evidence of a clogged drain in a side-by-side is the discovery of ice under the bottom basket in the freezer compartment.
@@macdaddypimpping thanks !
This certainly beats having to pay someone $1200 bucks for something you can do yourself
How come there isn''t a container for water to collect when the small loop of pipe is full?
Little water condensation and that's why there's no catch can, just drip on the metal panel on the back.
just buy fridge drain plug cleaner for couple quid and run it in from inside the fridge no need to move or open the back just right tool and save ur time
Can someone please tell me what is the drain on the back of the water dispenser for?
Many people aren't aware that their fridge contains a drain hole. This drain hole is in place to catch the moisture which collects in a fridge, particularly that which builds up on the back wall of the fridge. If the drain hole becomes blocked, this then causes problems for the rest of your refrigerator.
Drain tube was clogged on my Samsung refrigerator's freezer. I cleaned both of them, freezer and refrigerator, while I was at it. Problem solved!
Just cut the zip tie chief. Good video though thanks.
Great idea
@@macdaddypimpping lol, that was driving me nuts watching you try and get that pipe out. I just snipped my zip tie and replaced it with some coated wire I had in the house.
Crafting Pipe cleaners
What about the Grommet? It gets clogged too
plastic sink drain snake works faster and better.
A dollar store has skinny scrub brush to clean and you could of use Clorox it would soft it up with warm water 💦 😬and for those dust you can use a Computer duster spray to blow out all the dust 😬🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing!!
All you had to do was cut the zip tie..
If you cut zip tie, then you got to buy a new one. This is more cheap! Good job!
JoJo BMW talking to much
zip tie about 2 cents... whos cheap..
You probably will be better off just cut that drain tube from the loop part so that no water will accumulate there and allow algae to grow.
Cutting the drain pipe will allow hot hair to rise into the freezer, you do not want this. This design acts like a p-trap, a water barrier at the bottom curve to prevent outside heat from constantly going into your freezer.
Or regularly put baking soda in it
JUST REMINDED ME I FORGOT TO DO THE DISHES THIS MORNING.
next video,,, how to clean the sink drain...lol
"Yikes." 😁
Thank you for the information. I'd like to help your video making. People want to get right to the point of repair. You can save us five minutes on this video by bypassing how sunny it is outside, pulling it out from the wall, etc. etc. etc. We're looking for quick facts only. And please, respectfully, wash your dishes next time. I would also get a long tube brush, instead of a straw, to help clean the tube out quicker, that's another five minutes saved right there. Thank you!
Ok, thanks
OK you had the fridge pulled out why didn’t you clean everything. You could have vacuumed all that dirt off the back cooling radiator.
Yes, I do that every couple months to vacuumed the back where the motor fan.
so much trouble to save a ziptie...
what? why the loop at the bottom???? OF course it's going to clog... man today's appliances really suck
I just have water under my produce drawers, none on the floor.
cut the zip tie.
"Look at that nasty"ROFL!
doing this job in BARE feet??
Toe Jam!
Just use a vacuum to clean the condenser
Has nothing to do with a clogged drain hose
where does all the gunk come from its supposed to be distilled water
This line is for condensation drain tube so it's not for drinking water and the build up came from dust in the air and water build up combined.
I think a lot comes from stuff spilled in fridge and freezer dept.
City water is not as clean as they say
Design flaw by GE.
Yes, I agree.
My
0:56 I cannot unplug the refrigerator. I don't have another refrigerator and I don't have anywhere else to put the food. So unfortunately, I would not be able to do this.
If you are fast enough then you can unplug when you are about to clean the drain line.
If you don't open the doors to the freezer or refrigerator, you food can stay cold for days. Even if you do have to open the door, food can still stay cold for hours. This repair takes a few minutes; maybe 30 minutes at the most.
First to like and comment
Wear shoes when working on anything
this guy did not solve the problem, he's misleading the community, the blockage is from the inside the cooling compartment
I don't need to know how to unplug a refrigerator.
Believe it or not some of us wouldn't think of unplugging the fridge.
Too slow get to the point
Too much draging.....
