How to study effectively and increase exam scores using The Testing Effect

- The Testing Effect can boost your exam scores by 10-40%. That can be the difference between passing or failing, getting an A or a B, or getting a 1st or a 2:1. In a nutshell, The Testing Effect is the concept of taking exam-focussed practice-tests or quizzes before and after reading new material, with the addition of feedback. This then improves your retention of the material, allowing you to remember more of the things you learn and score a higher mark when you're tested further down the line in a final-test. Unfortunately this strategy is severely under-utilised mainly due to the misconception “I need to have learnt it well enough before I test myself”. We often think of testing as a method to check understanding and memory of something, rather than as part of the learning process. But, by not testing ourselves earlier, we're actually wasting one of, if not the most powerful evidence-based study tool. Another reason why The Testing Effect is under-utilised is due to the merging of active recall and The Testing Effect, rather than appreciating their differences and strengths. So, I want to clear up these misconceptions and share my 3 step process that has been scientifically proven to boost your exam scores. Try it out and let me know how it works for you. #study #exam #tips

So underrated!! Great editing and videos!!!
Haha thanks so much 🙌
We did this in my highschool in the Caribbean 🇧🇸. They made it mandatory that we buy past exam booklets (full of exams) for each class and after we finish the content then we would go through the past paper booklets and essentially test ourselves for about a month and got exceptional results if you took it seriously of course. This was only done for major exams, like BGCSE’s and BJC’s
I'm currently writing an essay on effective revision techniques for my psych BSc at uni. I've done lots of research and read several papers around the topic areas but was struggling to actually describe what testing actually was in an academic way. I'm very grateful that I found this video that helped me collect my thoughts before I start writing up my essay :)
Glad that I found you, couldn't thank you enough for the videos that you've made.
This was extremely helpful, thank you so much
So this is going to be a little random, but I really enjoy the way you talk 😊 It's not just the usual spoken language, you use less common words and I think it sounds just beautiful. Also, I'm not a native English speaker and already learned few new words from you and recalled some that I didn't have the opportunity to use😉 Thank you for this and all your hard work, awesome tips and great editing.
I'm sure you are an amazing doctor. Much love from Poland ~~
Thank you for the good information. I really love this channel.
Very well explained. Appreciate it 🌹
Love the video, thanks so much for giving such a good explanation... but what sources is this based on? do you have any links to recent studies maybe? thanks so much :) keep doing such outstanding work :)
Thank you for the video and congratulations on having qualified! Raza =)
One caveat to pre-testing: it can make you feel horrible and useless if you dive in without prior knowledge
Our teacher used to do pre-tests on us when we had no prior exposure to the subject whatsoever, couldn't even piece things together if we tried, and it just wore me down over time until I just didn't want to be in that class anymore
I can't wait to try this in nursing school. So much material, so little time!
Best of luck! 🙌
the video is INCREDIBLY INFORMATIONAL THNX A LOT
Loved the video! It was nice to hear about a new revision method other than active recall and spaced repetition haha
Haha amazing 🙌
Thank you for the video!!I've always wondered if it's better with immediate feedback or delayed feedback and other stuff i was wondering about. This video was really helpful!
Glad it was helpful!

Hi Shane, Thanks for this video! Could you please share what Cambridge URL you used to gain access to past tests? I am an incoming MPhil student.

Totally agree Cornell notes are nice
But there are simpler, safer & faster ways
Your advice is golden.
So kind! :)
Can you do a video about motivation and staying focussed? I found your channel through tiktok and so far it’s honestly the best thing 🙏 I’m hoping to get into Cambridge for philosophy but most of my subjects are essay based so practise papers are a bit more difficult
Absolutely! The video next Friday will be on study routine, motivation and focus 🙌

Love from india.

Random question what is your favourite Disney film?
Haha hmm don't have a specific one tbh
Doctor Shaene what are some of them?
Mulan was a banger, Lion Kings too
Hi guys, I'm building an application that serves precisely to solve this problem of having to create exercises to study, so you can use it to automate this work for you
You didn't address the fact that not every unversity has past exam papers listed on their websites. The universities I went to even forbid students to take the exam paper with them so we don't have access to past exam questions at all.
So helpful. I'm kicking myself today. Summer courses are hard and fast. 🥲
