Focus is something we all struggle with. It’s almost pointless knowing how to study if we can’t get ourselves to focus long enough to actually do it. On top of this, our demand on focus ebbs and flows as exam season approaches. Inevitably, we need to put in longer hours in the run up to exams than at the beginning of the year. So how do we actually get ourselves to focus so that we can study effectively for longer? Well, I scrutinised the study routine I designed for my second year exams that allowed me to study effectively for 12 hours a day, and distilled out the 5 principles behind its success. These are (1)forecasting, (2)operational shifting, (3)purposeful breaks, (4)technology limitation and finally, (5)contact minimisation. The first 4 I stand by to this day, but I have changed my mind about contact minimisation and now want to reframe it as productive contact. These principles are the foundation of my 12 hour study routine, that allowed me to focus without burn-out. And importantly, it enabled me to study effectively and get meaningful results, allowing me to perform the best I had done during my 6 years in Cambridge. Please do not take this video to mean, you have to study for 12 hours a day for success, instead use these principles to design your own effective study routine that’s going to help you focus for longer. #focus #study #tips #revision #exams

This is the only video I would tell you to watch instead of searching its summary in the comment section.
This is the only STUDY ROUTINE video I completed before jumping to the comment section.
but somehow every 12h study video on youtube is made by med student or doctor 😂
(And i keep watching them instead of studying)
James Scholz is a computer engineering major
True, i literally can't find one without a med or doctor, I'm an Arts student, Economics, Business, History etc. Studying is different depending on what yaz special on.
Guys i will do this for 3 months for my university admission test. Wish me luck :’)
Best of luck❤️
It's really hard 😌 i didn't make it everyday maybe only once a week :( i really wish i could do it everyday because its only 74 days left until the test 😅 please wish me luck everyone and thank you for your kind wishes

Really amazing tips!!! need to tune up my routine as well..especially structuring my breaks properly to avoid burn out. I am currently in almost 8 hours a day sometimes 10. But i think if I try this out i would actually be able to go longer too.
Thank you so much for taking time to make this video!
Thanks so much 🙌 Best of luck with implementing some of these strategies 🙌
@@DoctorShaene How many days did you study for 12 hours...and how did you not get bored or depressed and want tongo outside? Was it only a few days?
This video has helped me alot to do well
Your channel is great and so is your video quality. I am sure you will blow up shortly :)
Very helpful
Thank you=)
This guy is my life-changer.
Thank you for sharing your schedule! I am not sure I could complete the whole of it if it was me. Seemed I never knew how to study smart. Have noticed that we get distracted and need rest and thankfully to you, I know how now. Social media and internet are really big distractions and my material is online. I am not having exams, thank God, projects are my power. I am having 4 assessments to work on at the same time, half of my dissertation, a marketing analysis, a program and a website. Would adapt your advice to my assessments. The bad thing is all the material is needed is on the internet, so I have to train will. Also using internet long time hurts our back and head at some point.
Editing and content quality is superb....
This video is very helpful for me😋😊🐣
This editing is on point
Thanks so much 🙌 Spent a hot minute on it haha
you nailed it.
Thanks Dr for your tips which is really helping me in germany 🇩🇪.
Thank you! Best of luck!
Dr. I realy watch it before my strict days of test bruh....I am really motivated
Nice video Dr Shaene
Thanks so much 🙌
This is such a good video!! I ve always struggled with studying and concentrating myself in doing a task. I am 14 yrs old and I have a big exam for a path to a variety of top high schools and i dont wanna miss it just because i wasnt concentrating enough. I m trying to do better just because i dont want to feel "stupid" again. Thank you for your time and hard work , Doctor Shaene😁
I wish I saw this video at 14. Life is not great without study discipline.
Same! I’m 14 but I feel like it’s too late for me because 14 is too old and I’ve already been set up for procrastination
@@iwillgetayorkie3262 Not at all. You can still change things, but you have to give yourself a serious look because it only gets worse to tackle if not dealt with early.
I'm a believer in God, and a verse in the bible that scares me into discipline is Proverbs 21:17 "He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich."
@@iwillgetayorkie3262 it s NOT too late man! Take my example: I am right now studying at a very high appreciated high school and even tho im still fighting my procrastination it s better than last year. And my solution to this awful thing is to stop watching tiktok and read more books. It may sound weird but reading made me more self aware about my tasks and helped me focus on short/long periods of time unlike tiktok or media which is destroying my attention span minute by minute with max one minute videos. I hope you understand and forgive me if i made spelling mistakes (im pretty sick and my head hurts):) You ll be alright in your journey!
Thanks doc
I've been planning it and tomorrow I'll start following this routine!
Good luck to me 🤠
And😂
Edit: ladies and gentlemen I am his friend and he quit!😂😂😂
@@koketsomaganyela5859 that's the spirit
Wait what
Can I get this straight, you did 12hrs each day a month before your exam, or 12hrs each day everyday during your whole 6 years in Cambridge?
Only a month before
a buff genius!
Getting those Ali Abdaal Vibes..Good Content!!
what a video
epic !!
Amazing 😻
Thanks!
your study routine is now mine :)
Im studying physics!! I have finals in 2 months. Thank u for the tips☺️
How do you apply this principle to doing homework’s ? I’m studying online due to the pandemic, I have no professors and I have to deliver the homework on the deadline, any tip ?
Amazing
Your editing 👏👏👏👏👏
You’re too kind 🙌
I'm preparing korea electrical engineering license exam. So, I will start this tomorrow. Wish me good luck !! And thank you for this video.
In my experience social life is foundamental, and it seriously benefits the study. Giving yourself some free time in the evening to hang out with friends a couple times per week prevents you that feeling of alienation . Plus for me waking up knowing that at the end of the day i will enjoy some free time gives me motivation to do alla the thing i have to during the day sessions.
Some people simply don't like people that much.
Very interesting. I'm writing a video on why learning that much is a terrible idea and I'm glad to see that at least someone thought deeply about the core principles involved in sustained attention. I think you should have added something. One of the best way to replenish focus according to research is mind wandering, because it allows the default network of the brain to express. the theory behind it is called resource control theory.
Great content, awesome editing thumsb up greetings Form Germany.
Thanks so much 🤝🥰
@@DoctorShaene I want to be a straight student so bad, but not getting the results I want. How did you convince yourself that it is possible for you ?
great!
bro I did same as you did , i.e I also prepared my time table like you. , I am class 11 , so I changed the subjects and substituted math , physical and chemistry , so what I got problem here is that I am procrastinating , I sit to study but get attracted by CZcams , Pubg , etc and my timetable is getting affected
I'm going to try this in yr13 weekends
Thank you so much for the amazing tips, will definitely implement these in my study routine. The effort you have put in for the editing is commendable. LOVED IT🙌❤
Do you not take any short 5-10 min breaks during that 1hr study session?
Also was ossification your fav topic in med school?🤪
Thanks so much! 🙌 Haha yep did take a while to edit everything haha. And nope don’t take any short breaks personally but it’d be sensible to adjust the timings to whatever you’re comfortable with 🙌 loool loved ossification 😂😂
Hi :) how did you learn/study during the semester while having classes? Right now I am preparing for exams and I easily get the 10-12 hours a day done. However during the semester its more like 2 hours a day. I would really appreciate some advice!
Thanks
After 3rd attemp i saw ur video fully.
It's really good..nd i am going to use it...
All the best
im applying for med school in july, going to do this till then. wish me luck:)
Best of luck, u got this!
everything you said in this video is fantastic, but having a tough time schedule / having complete control over yourself becomes impossible when you live with your family there are always distractions coming in between what you have decided for yourself, also I have a baby brother 🤧who causes a lot of distractions. I have to do what my parents have planned for weekends etc.. sometimes it's really frustrating . But anyways thanks for the tips, will try my best to incorporate in my schedule !!!
I am going to do it
what's that app at 1:53
@Doctor Shaene
What did you do when something took you way longer than expected ?
Very good question! Tbh I’d take the L and try to rearrange the day to still achieve the other aspects of revision. For example reduce break times etc. - all with the knowledge that next time this thing that took me ages will go quicker!
I wanna study more but my phone doesn't let me do it !
But I really really wanna delete CZcams from today till next year and get away of all social media programs. because my entrance exam that is next year.
You really motivated me bro... good wishes for you.🌼💕
when i take my books at the end of the term i do not know what lessons should I study also I procrastinate a lot
Underrated
Most of the studytubers come with in built Awesome video production n editing skills for free so I (sometimes) forget about what I'm watching n focus on WHAT I'M WATCHING
I appreciate that! (i think)
Which editing app do u use??
Thank you so much for these incredible tips!!! I took notes about all your tips and I'm looking forward to improving and structuring my study routine better.
I love the way you explained all the concepts and immediately subscribed to your channel. I can't wait to watch more of your videos and have to say your editing is absolutely amazing! Congrats!!!
Thanks so much! That’s so great to hear 🙌
Hi!!! Do you use any app to make your schudle? =)
I'll be following this for next 3 months.. I hope i m able to stick
Best of luck but take care of your mental health too! Avoid nasty burn out!
how is it possible to wake up at 6:30 and study from 6:30 to 8?
what about the time for washing face, brushing... after waking up?
0:56 the dad's face looks so proud
How do you structure your revision when you also have essays and assignments due in? Just thinking about how I can implement a similar structure as a sixth former with homework etc as well as revision time.
Great question! So this routine is my routine for a month before exams. For normal day to day routine, it’d be more flexible and I set aside time do work that is due. So for example replace a study session or 2 with time for doing work that is due in.
How do you workout 2.5h and only sleep for 7h??? I used to workout 3hs a day (mainly cardio) and i could eaaasily sleep for 12 hours!😅
Thanks for the tips! Quick question though, did you not use spaced repetition then because it seems like the interval between revisiting a topic stayed the same?
Yeah when I was in my 2nd year I didn’t really appreciate the science of it all. That being said constant interval repetition does help too, but spaced repetition (progressively longer delays) is even better and more efficient!
my second video is out now!
Do you have study tips for the working adult?
Now I'm preparing for my university admission and the lessons are plenty but the time is only 2 and a half month so I exactly want to study for 12 hours a day
How long did you keep up this schedule?
I wish I had found this sooner.. test in 34 days wish me luck 🍀
This is guy is soooo underrated
