Why English Spelling Doesn't Make Sense

English is the Frankenstein of Languages. It has had a very long history, and because of this, English spelling can be very difficult to understand. But Why is this, and how is it that English Spelling became such a nightmare.

I always explain Explained this as so many borrowed words from immigrants and Latin and Greek roots. I can see now that I barely touched the surface. I missed the French connection entirely. Thank you
